The Issue of Hypocrisy in relationships in Behr's Smell of Apples There are many situations in which are shown hypocrisy in Behrs Smell of Apples. The characters lie in some situations and have different beliefs and opinions from others. There is some kind of competition between characters, everyone wants to be better than others and it is the main issue of hypocrisy. The first situation of hypocrisy is shown when Frikkie copied homework from Marnus and Marnus was accused and Frikkie said nothing. He was hypocritical because he became a good pupil in Mrs. Engelbrachts eyes. And then, Frikkie was hypocritical again when he swore about whales in the museum that wasnt true and this shows us he thinks he has better knowledge than Marnus. Hypocrisy is clearly shown in the case of the Erasmus servant, Doreen, who is a black-skinned woman and there is an argument when Leonore, Marnus mum, talked with Tannie Karla about blacks in general. Leonore said Doreen is one of the happiest black women because she is their servant and she is respected as much as other blacks are not. The speaker called black people as the Coloureds which mean more racism than hypocritically. The third situation of Frikkies hypocrisy was when Marnus and he played a joke with Zelda on the bay and when waves made her wet and he lied to a man who saw them that she cries because her dress is wet. When Ilse, Marnus and Leonore were at visiting Little-Neville in hospital, Ilse said he would better dead because he was going to hate all white people because of that what they had done him. Her behaviour was hypocritical because she said what she thought and it probably would not be true. Frikkie and Marnus became blood-brothers and Marnus told him everything what nobody knows and he was a nave because Frikkie would not tell him his secrets. Frikkies behaviour is the most hypocritical in this story. He lied a lot and had an impossible opinions and beliefs about the situations in which he does not have good knowledge. Thats why there is a lot of hypocritical situations which show us that each of them wants to be better than others and simply, they want to show them as they are the best.
