DETERMINATION OF STRIPPING VALUE

OF ROAD AGGREGATES

Aim: To determine the stripping value of road aggregates by binders.

Apparatus:

1.
2.
3.
4.
5.

Heat resistant glass beaker of 500 ml capacity.

20mm and 12.5mm IS sieves.
Mixer.
Balance of capacity 10Kg and sensitivity 1gram.
Water bath preferably with a thermostat.

Theory :

The stripping value of aggregates is determined as the ratio of the

uncovered area observed visually to the total area of aggregates,
expressed as a percentage. Bitumen and tar adhere well to all normal
types of aggregates provided they are dry and are not exceptionally
dusty. This problem of stripping is experienced only with bituminous
mixtures, which are permeable to water. This test gives the procedure for
determination of the stripping value of aggregates by static immersion
method, when bitumen and tar binders are used.
Procedure:
1. Take 200 grams of dry and clean aggregates passing 20mm and

retained on 12.5mm sieves and heat up to 1500C.

2. Take five percent by weight of bitumen binder and heat up to
1600C.
3. Mix the aggregates and the binder till they are completely
coated and transfer the mixture in to a 500ml beaker and allow to cool at
room temperature for about 2 hours.
4.

Add distilled water to immerse the coated aggregates.

5. Cover the beaker and keep in a water bath maintained at 400C

taking care that the level of water in the water bath is at least half the
height of the beaker.
6.
After 24hours take the beaker out, cool at room temperature
and estimate the extent of stripping visually while the specimen is still
under the water.

Results :
Report the mean of three results as stripping value of the tested
aggregates to the nearest whole number =
%.

Inference :
As Per IS 6241-1971, has specified the maximum stripping value as
25 percent for aggregates to be used in bituminous construction like
surface dressing penetration macadam, bituminous macadam and
carpet.
uses :
Some types of aggregates have a lesser affinity with bitumen in
comparison with water and hence stripping value of the bituminous
binder is done when the mix is immersed in water. The problem of
stripping in coated aggregate is not so amenable to theoretical
treatment. Thus an adhesion test such as the simple stripping test would
be suitable to assess whether the binder would adhere to the aggregate

when immersed in water. Several anti-stripping agents are available,

which when used with the bituminous mix reduce the stripping.
