Re: WADA Cyber-Attacks

Dear Mr. Figueroa,
I wanted to contact you directly to explain how the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) is
responding to the recent cyber-attacks on the Agencys Anti-Doping Administration and
Management System (ADAMS), and to apologise to you for this incident.
WADA is taking this situation, and your privacy, very seriously. The incident response
team that we have assembled is actively working with law enforcement agencies in
Canada and elsewhere, and acting on the intelligence obtained through our investigations
to prevent any further intrusions. We are also consulting with leading cyber security
experts to ensure that no further information is accessed from your WADA account or
those of your fellow athletes.
WADA, and all supporters of clean sport, are appalled by the attempts that have been
made to tarnish your reputation, which we believe is in response to recent revelations
regarding state-sanctioned doping in Russia. You likely have been targeted on account
of your outstanding achievements in sport and your public status in an attempt to
distract the masses and, in particular the media, from the real issue at hand.
We currently believe that the cyber espionage group operator by the name of Fancy Bear
illegally gained access to ADAMS via an account created for the Rio 2016 Games. This
was made possible by spear phishing of email accounts through which hackers obtained
ADAMS passwords. We have no reason to believe that they have accessed the broader
ADAMS system.
