Five-Year Career Plan Template

The Five-Year Career Plan is designed to help you develop skills in your current job or
to prepare for your next job. Your five-year plan is very much an individual and personal
plan, and is designed to facilitate your growth, development and advancement. Always
use the SMART model when setting goals: Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic
and within a specific Timeframe.
Plan Period: From 1/10/16 to 1/10/21
My Current Position: Level 3 year 2 Business student at Shipley College
My Long-Term Goal: Accountant
Intermediate Steps Over the Next Five Years to Reach My Goal
Try to set two or three short term goals (i.e. those in the next 2 years) and
the remainder for the medium term (following 3 years)
As it is my last year at Shipley College I will get involved in at least two

volunteering opportunities by the end of the year.

Another short term goal of mine is to get a C grade in maths in my re-sit

in November 2016.

Get at least a DMM as my overall grade at the end of the course.

I want to be on an accounting and finance course in University which is
three years long.

I also want to do at least one piece of volunteer work a week.

I want to successfully pass my first year of University.

I want to get a part time job during my second year at University.

I want to pass my last year of university to get my degree in finance and
accounting.

Research at least 5 firms that I am interested in working at.

Once I have completed my degree I want to apply for entry accounting
jobs at the 5 firms I have researched.

Personal Development Objectives to Meet My Goals

(What do I need to do to get where I want to be?)
A personal development objective I need to improve is my communication skills
specifically my verbal communication and my confidence. To do this I will need to
interact with more people and events during college for example I will do this by joining
Andrew Hamiltons youth club. This will increase my confidence as well as

communication skills as I will be engaging in different activities with different people out
of my comfort zone. This will help me achieve my goal as you need to be confident in
order to succeed in work even more so in a business related job like accounting where
what you do is very important to the business youre working at so you must be confident
in your work.

Another personal development objective I have is I need to be more focused and complete
any work given before the due date. To do this I will plan when I will do the work and
then allocate and spend more time on it this will make working more efficient for me and
allow me to always complete work on time which will help me attain the grades needed to
go to university.

Another personal development objective I have is I need to be involved in more

extracurricular activities. To do this I will look on volunteering websites and around
college for volunteering opportunities. This will help me achieve my goals as when
applying for university or jobs the interviewer is I am more likely to be hired than I
wouldve been if I didnt have any experience this is because interviewers prefer to accept
candidates that have previous experience.

How can others help me accomplish these objectives?

Shipley College staff can help me accomplish my first objective which is to improve my
communication skills and my confidence. They can do this by organizing and creating
opportunities to engage with different people for example college events such as a
fundraiser for charity.
The centre of excellence staff can help me accomplish my third objective by helping me
look for volunteering opportunities and work experience. This will help become more
qualified as I will have more experience.
