CHAPTER I
THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND
Introduction
Computers are now said to be a primary tool of progress in the fast-pacing
world. Whether it is for jobs, schools, homes or just for ones own leisure,
computers have become a household name. It has become a necessity for
people all over the world to be able to connect, store, socialize and even to
study.
Long before the time of technological advancement, connecting meant
having the same likes and dislikes of a person; Storing meant having to put
important things inside their proper places; Socializing meant coming to
gatherings and catching up with someones life or having small talks with a
stranger; Studying meant opening a book, searching for its contents and reading
the materials one by one these are still very effective ways even in the 21st
century yet people still try to discover and innovate new, more comfortable ways
for each person to be able to do all those things. As the time progressed,
technological advancement became a global trend. This paved a new wave, a
new generation for every individual. Now, anyone is able to do all of those things
in a compact gadget.
Because of that, with the quick advancement in our daily ways, all people,
adults and the youth, especially students who are in most need to be taught
about the technology-driven world, are completely affected by computers.

In the educational aspect, most of the information needed can be

searched with the use of computers. Every detail and opinion shows up with a
click or a tap of a button. With such ease to search for the answers, students
often rely on it. These in turn, affect their academic performances. This is why
computers and internet usage have been the chosen topic of the conductors of
this research. For the researchers to be able to know the effects of computers
and internet to the academic performances to the students, a group of five
people from the section of Corinthians which are Grade 10 students of The Lipa
Grace Academy, conducted a research entitled, An Assessment on The Lipa
Grace Academys Grade 7 Students Computer and Internet Usage.

Statement of the Problem

This study aims to assess The Lipa Grace Academys Grade 7 Students
Computer and Internet Usage.
Specifically, the study ought to answer the following questions:
1. What is the profile of the students-respondents in terms of
1.1 age;
1.2 gender;
1.3 section?
2. How computers and internet affect the lives of every Grade 7
students?
3. How can you relate the use of computers and internet in the academic
performance of the students?

4. How can computers influence or affect the interests of every student?

5. What are the advantages of using computer to the students in the
following areas of concerns:
5.1 Homework
5.2 Performance Tasks
5.3 Researches
5.4 Behavior and Attitude
5.5 Health Condition
6. What are the disadvantages of using computer to the students in the
following areas of concerns:
6.1 Homework
6.2 Performance Tasks
6.3 Researches
6.4 Behavior and Attitude
6.5 Health Condition
Hypotheses
1. The computers and internet make youth dependent on it for everyday use.
2. The significant difference in gender will affect the way the respondents
use computers and internet for their academic performances.

Significance of the Study

This study is beneficial to the researchers, students, teachers, future
researchers, and the parents. The findings of this study will redound to the
benefit of every student considering that computers play an important role in the
life of students today. There is a widespread belief among teachers that
students constant use of technology is hampering their attention span and
ability to persevere in facing challenging tasks.
With the rapid growth of technology and emergence of a better society,
students have discovered computer and internet as a powerful portable useful
device for education. Although, studies have shown rapid growth of computers
within education, there is a limited research on how computers are used for
classroom performances, communication, and leadership among students.
Students. The students who have access to computers and the internet
are able to use it as an extension of their learning. They will realize the benefits
and drawbacks that may take effect on them through its continued use.
Teachers. The teachers may find effective ways in integrating the use of
computers and internet in their teaching learning process.
Researchers. The study will help them to discover critical areas regarding
the research that many researchers were not able to explore.
Parents. This will give them additional information about the effects of
using computers in the academic performance of the students. They can control
the way their children use computer especially at home.

Future Students of Research. The findings of this research is expected

to be beneficial to the future researchers as it may serve as a reference for their
future study regarding the effects of computers and internet in the academic
performance of the students.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study was concerned mainly with the effects of computers and
internet to the selected Grade 7 students.
Specifically, it covered the effects of using computers and internet in the
students homework, performance task, research, behaviour and attitude, and
health condition. The study also determined the possible advantages and
disadvantages of computers in the said areas.
This study was written in descriptive design where survey questionnaires
were used to gather information.
This study is limited to the 108 Grade 7 students of The Lipa Grace
Academy as respondents out of its 145 total population. The data generated for
this study was limited only on the responses provided by the respondents to the
questionnaires given since focus group discussion and interview were not used
as instruments.

Definition of Terms
To make this research more understandable to those who might come
across it, the researchers included the definition of the following terms:
Fast-pacing. The means of communication where in certain events
happen rapidly.
Leisure. It is a chance or opportunity for an individual to have a spare
time for his enjoyment.
Necessity. It is something one must-have or something important.

CHAPTER II
REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES
In todays generation, computers and internet are commonly used

for

studying. Thus, this chapter shows a summary of information, statements, and

articles from published books, journals, and online search engines. These
concepts were all related to the current study of the researchers which mainly
concerns the effects of computers and internet usage on the students.
Related Literature
Prof. Dr. M. Y. Saada (1992) defined technological innovation as a
technological idea which does not pre exist and whose addition gives better
performance that the existing technology, i.e. an improvement. The modern
computers were products of this technological innovation.
Rene F. Aguirre (1987) pointed out the use of computers on education. He
supposed that the promised of personal computing for teaching and learning is
that instructions can be uniquely adapted to each individual student. From simple
features, such as the ability to select a sequence of topics which makes sense
from the learners viewpoint, to more advanced capabilities, such as facilities to
generate examples of concepts and provide practice material on demand, the
computer promises to provide a tutor of unique value. The key advantage is
individual control, and the great attraction will be the opportunity to learn subjects
of ones own choice in a self paced, supportive environment. An analogy can

be made to travelling. As a student, you now tour the countries of someone

elses choice, firmly handcuffed to the tour guide/ teacher.
Aguirre added that in the developed countries, computers in schools are
used in many ways. Computers are used in drill and practice lessons in many
academic areas; for educational activities with a game format; for simulations for
recreating real life situations and problem solving and for such activities as word
processing, learning computer programming, etc. School administrators are
using computers in the classroom not as a means of reducing costs but to
improve the quality of education. The use of the computer will free teachers to
give them more time to give more individual attention to students requiring it. It
will allow students to learn and study their own pace; discover their own
weaknesses and strengths to enable them to take more courses. Students using
computers in learning will develop more logical thinking, will be able to form
instructions better and will show improvement in their reasoning and math skills.

Related Studies
Maxim Skryabin, Jingjing Zhang, Danhui Zhang (2015) conducted their
own study entitled, How the ICT Development Level and Usage Influence
Student Achievement in Reading, Mathematics, and Science, which contributed
new knowledge about the relationship between national ICT development and
individual skills. The results of their study also indicatedthat ICT use showed

10

mixed influences on three subjects for all groups of individuals, depending on the
different types of ICT usage.
Letao Sun and Kelly D. Bradley conducted a study with the title Using the
U.S. PISA Results to Investigate the Relationship between School Computer Use
and Student Academic Performance. Their study added supplementary
information to the existing body of literature on the influence of computer use at
school to students academic performance. The study also points out that the
weak correlation found in their study suggests the frequency of computer use
might not be a good indicator to predict academic achievement however it was
found that students who use computers almost every day have significant higher
achievement scores that those who use computers in moderate or low
frequencies. The results of their study suggests that simply increasing the
educational input on computers at school may not produce the desired effect
instead, the quality of integrating computer use into effective instructional
activities plays a more important role in influencing student academic outcomes.

Synthesis
The published article of Prof. Dr. M. Y. Saana (January March 1992) and
the study of the group of Maxim Skrybin, Jingjing Zhang and Danhui Zhang (July
2015) that focused about the technological innovation and the ICT that the
Philippines is adapting is the reason why computers have been mainly used at
schools. Computers have been a part of the education system and thus, it

11

contributes effects on the academic performance of the students. The effect of

brought about by using computer varies on the way the student uses computer.
The way they define technological innovation and ICT have help the current
study to be formulated.
The point of view of Rene F. Aguirre (June 1987) and the study of Letao
Sun and Kelly D. Bradley both have the resemblance of stating that the way on
how the students make use of the computers are the factors that truly affect their
academic performances in their study. The only variation of the opinion and the
study is the utilization of the computers, it is one of the major contributors that
has an impact to the academic study and most importantly to the existence of
each student.

Conceptual Framework
The research paradigm demonstrates the variables set by the researchers
to guide them in this study. Specifically, the independent variable is characterized
by the effects of computers and internet to todays generation, while the
dependent variable pertains to the academic performance of Grade 7 Students in
The Lipa Grace Academy SY 2015-2016 in order to form the respondents profile
in labeling of name, age, grade and section, and including the gender.

CHAPTER III
RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
This chapter presents the procedures employed by the researchers in
conducting this study.

Research Design
The researchers used the descriptive method of research to find the
present status of the respondents in their use of computers and how it affects the
Grade 7 students in their academic performance through a series of questions.
Borg and Gall (1989) implied that descriptive studies aim to find out what
is so observational and survey methods are frequently used to collect descriptive
data.
Glass and Hopkins (1894) assists that the use of descriptive method in
research involves gathering of data that describes events and then organizes,
tabulates, depicts and describes the data collection.
Krathwohl (1993) distinguishes that the combination of its characteristic
summary and correlational statistics, along with its focus on specific types of
research questions, methods, and outcomes all what distinguishes descriptive
research from other research types.
Borg and Gall (1989) stated that the descriptive research can include
multiple variables for analysis yet unlike, other methods, it inquires one variable.

14

Sampling Procedure
The researchers randomly selected the respondents for the study. By
chance, they were able to pick the Grade 7 students as their respondents. The
said grade level is composed of 4 sections, sampling 27 randomly selected
students in each with a total of 108 students.

Research Instruments
There was only one instrument used in the study which was the
questionnaire. The questionnaire was used as a tool to measure the personal
assessment of the respondents understanding about the subject of the study.
The questionnaire focused on the respondents basic personal profile. It
included the name, gender, age and the date on which they answered the survey
questions. Then, it revolved around 10 questions that center the view of the
respondents on the topic.

Development and Validation of the Research Paper

The research instrument used was the questionnaire which has gone
through many phases before reaching its preferred state of releasing. The
researcher thought of questions which are aligned to their chosen topic and
immediately asked for the approval of the following people: Mr. Moises F. Peralta
checked and suggested to change some of the questions and its choices, Mr.
Jeric P. Capuchino instructed the researchers to refer to the statement of the
problem and change some of the survey questions. Miss Donna M. Bautista

15

checked and made revisions on the survey questionnaires. She approved the
questionnaires and instructed the researchers to print a copy to have it checked
again.
After the careful planning of the survey questionnaire and having it verified
and eventually approved the survey questionnaires were printed, reproduced and
distributed to the respondents.

Data Gathering Procedures

The researchers purposely thought of some questions to be used in the
survey questionnaires and with the supervision of the instructors of research
namely Miss Donna M. Bautista, Mr. Moises F. Peralta, Mr. Jeric P. Capuchino
and Mr. Allan F. Falejo, the researchers were able to achieve their desired
approval. The instructors of research were greatly involved in the making,
suggesting and revising of the questionnaires.
The survey questionnaires were given to the randomly selected
respondents of each class. Each had ten questions about the topic which was
used to get the needed data. The researchers assured that the number of
questionnaires returned was complete.
The data that were gathered were arranged according to its respective
group. It was then tallied, graphed, analyzed and then interpreted per question.
The data went through a series of procedures that were highly regarded as
appropriate and reliable. The wanted outcomes were met and were responsibly
used to fill the expectations of the research objectives.

16

Statistical Treatment of Data

The researchers applied the following steps to interpret and analyze the
data collected from the outcomes of the survey questionnaires.
1. Frequency Distribution.

A design of statistical data that shows the

frequency of the events in the values of a variable.

2. Circle or Pie Graph. This kind of graph shows the comparison of the
measured data that is divided into its corresponding triangular parts for
each category that can be seen as a whole circle.

3. Bar Graph. This kind of graph or chart relates and compares the quality or
amount of something that uses different lengths of rectangle that can be in
the horizontal or vertical form.

4. Simple Percentage. This method is used to be able to find out the

percentage of the respondents in accordance to their age, section and
gender. It is applied to calculate the rank of the respondents personal
profile using this formula.
P = F / N (100)
Where:

P = Percentage
F = Frequency of respondents belonging to a class
N = Total number of respondents in all classes
/ = Operational symbol for division

17

100 = Constant Multiplier

5. Slovins Formula. This kind of formula is used to get the total number of
students that is needed for the survey.
n= N/1+Ne2
Where:

N = number of sample
e = margin of error
n = number of samples

behavior and attitude, and it can also be the cause for the students to
obtain a bad health condition. For this to be effective, they can set rules
for everyone to follow.
6. It is highly recommended to have an E Library at the School. It will have
computers with an internet connection and is open for everyone who will
do their homework, performance task or research. With this, the students
wont have to worry of going to computer shops or borrowing laptops or

38

computers from other people. It will not be necessary also for some
students to spend money in loading their broadband or pocket WiFi since
the E Library has an internet connection.
7. Enhancement activity proposed to bring positive effects on using
computers and internet for the academic performance of the students is
having an E Library with rules and regulations implemented for the
students to use it the right way to improve their academic performance.

In general, computers and internet affect the academic performance of

students in both positive and negative ways in different aspects.
