CHAPTER I
THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND
Introduction
Computers are now said to be a primary tool of progress in the fast-pacing
world. Whether it is for jobs, schools, homes or just for ones own leisure,
computers have become a household name. It has become a necessity for
people all over the world to be able to connect, store, socialize and even to
study.
Long before the time of technological advancement, connecting meant
having the same likes and dislikes of a person; Storing meant having to put
important things inside their proper places; Socializing meant coming to
gatherings and catching up with someones life or having small talks with a
stranger; Studying meant opening a book, searching for its contents and reading
the materials one by one these are still very effective ways even in the 21st
century yet people still try to discover and innovate new, more comfortable ways
for each person to be able to do all those things. As the time progressed,
technological advancement became a global trend. This paved a new wave, a
new generation for every individual. Now, anyone is able to do all of those things
in a compact gadget.
Because of that, with the quick advancement in our daily ways, all people,
adults and the youth, especially students who are in most need to be taught
about the technology-driven world, are completely affected by computers.
Definition of Terms
To make this research more understandable to those who might come
across it, the researchers included the definition of the following terms:
Fast-pacing. The means of communication where in certain events
happen rapidly.
Leisure. It is a chance or opportunity for an individual to have a spare
time for his enjoyment.
Necessity. It is something one must-have or something important.
Technological advancement. It is the development in the society that
shows a great impact to someones life; the stage where a lot of new
inventions were created.
Innovate. It is a human act of introducing new features, methods
especially the products or making changes in something.
Aspect. It is said to be a part of a situation or an action.
Performances. It is defined as a persons way of accomplishing the given
tasks and accelerating in studies.
Redound. It is contributing and providing extremely to a persons
existence.
Hampering. It is the results or prevention of difficulties and delay.
Integrating. It is a way of constructing the parts together to make it a
whole.
Correlation. It is defined as the relationship between things.
Weigh. It is to think carefully about something.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES
In todays generation, computers and internet are commonly used
for
Related Studies
Maxim Skryabin, Jingjing Zhang, Danhui Zhang (2015) conducted their
own study entitled, How the ICT Development Level and Usage Influence
Student Achievement in Reading, Mathematics, and Science, which contributed
new knowledge about the relationship between national ICT development and
individual skills. The results of their study also indicatedthat ICT use showed
10
mixed influences on three subjects for all groups of individuals, depending on the
different types of ICT usage.
Letao Sun and Kelly D. Bradley conducted a study with the title Using the
U.S. PISA Results to Investigate the Relationship between School Computer Use
and Student Academic Performance. Their study added supplementary
information to the existing body of literature on the influence of computer use at
school to students academic performance. The study also points out that the
weak correlation found in their study suggests the frequency of computer use
might not be a good indicator to predict academic achievement however it was
found that students who use computers almost every day have significant higher
achievement scores that those who use computers in moderate or low
frequencies. The results of their study suggests that simply increasing the
educational input on computers at school may not produce the desired effect
instead, the quality of integrating computer use into effective instructional
activities plays a more important role in influencing student academic outcomes.
Synthesis
The published article of Prof. Dr. M. Y. Saana (January March 1992) and
the study of the group of Maxim Skrybin, Jingjing Zhang and Danhui Zhang (July
2015) that focused about the technological innovation and the ICT that the
Philippines is adapting is the reason why computers have been mainly used at
schools. Computers have been a part of the education system and thus, it

CHAPTER III
RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
This chapter presents the procedures employed by the researchers in
conducting this study.
Research Design
The researchers used the descriptive method of research to find the
present status of the respondents in their use of computers and how it affects the
Grade 7 students in their academic performance through a series of questions.
Borg and Gall (1989) implied that descriptive studies aim to find out what
is so observational and survey methods are frequently used to collect descriptive
data.
Glass and Hopkins (1894) assists that the use of descriptive method in
research involves gathering of data that describes events and then organizes,
tabulates, depicts and describes the data collection.
Krathwohl (1993) distinguishes that the combination of its characteristic
summary and correlational statistics, along with its focus on specific types of
research questions, methods, and outcomes all what distinguishes descriptive
research from other research types.
Borg and Gall (1989) stated that the descriptive research can include
multiple variables for analysis yet unlike, other methods, it inquires one variable.
14
Sampling Procedure
The researchers randomly selected the respondents for the study. By
chance, they were able to pick the Grade 7 students as their respondents. The
said grade level is composed of 4 sections, sampling 27 randomly selected
students in each with a total of 108 students.
Research Instruments
There was only one instrument used in the study which was the
questionnaire. The questionnaire was used as a tool to measure the personal
assessment of the respondents understanding about the subject of the study.
The questionnaire focused on the respondents basic personal profile. It
included the name, gender, age and the date on which they answered the survey
questions. Then, it revolved around 10 questions that center the view of the
respondents on the topic.
15
checked and made revisions on the survey questionnaires. She approved the
questionnaires and instructed the researchers to print a copy to have it checked
again.
After the careful planning of the survey questionnaire and having it verified
and eventually approved the survey questionnaires were printed, reproduced and
distributed to the respondents.

SUMMARY, CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS
Summary
This study aims to evaluate the Assessment on The Lipa Grace
Academys Grade 7 Students Computer and Internet Usage
Specifically, the study ought to answer the following questions:
1. What is the profile of the students-respondents in terms of
1.1 age;
1.2 gender;
1.3 and section?
2. How computers and internet affect the lives of every Grade 7 students?
3. How can you relate the use of the computer and internet in the
academic performance of the students?
4. How can computers influence or affect the interests of every student?
5. What are the advantages of using computer to the students in the
following areas of concerns:
5.1 Homework
5.2 Performance Tasks
32
5.3 Researches
5.4 Behavior and Attitude
5.5 Health Condition
6. What are the disadvantages of using computer to the students in the
following areas of concerns:
6.1 Homework
6.2 Performance Tasks
6.3 Researches
6.4 Behavior and Attitude
6.5 Health Condition
The survey questionnaire was used as the main data gathering instrument
allocated for 108 grade 7 Student respondents from The Lipa Grace Academy. It
was employed to get the outcome of the preceding questions. The collected data
were classified and interpreted by the use of the following statistical methods:
Frequency Distribution, Simple Percentage, Slovins Formula and Statistical
Graph which includes the Tabular Presentation and Graphical Presentation Bar
Graph and Circle or Pie Graph.
Summary of Findings
1. Profile of the Respondents
1.1 Age. Fifty-five or 50.93% of the respondents are 13 years old; 50 or
46.30% are 12 years old; three or 2.77% are only 14 years old.
33
34
From
35
these findings, the researchers have come up with the conclusion that the
computer brings a lot of advantages in terms of their academic performances.
6. The Disadvantages of using Computer to the Students
The 68% of the respondents answered that they usually spend 1-3 hours
using a computer. 21% are using computers from 4-6 hours. According to
Jawad Khan, the young generation is now spending more time in social
media websites all through the night which is bad for both their studies and
their health. The tally of 63 or 58.33% answered that they have experienced
getting the wrong kind of information from the computer. The respondents
answered that the computers lead them to addiction in online games, proven
by the tally of 41 or 37.96%. It is followed by the outcome of having damaged
eyes supported by the tally of 37 or 34.26%. According to Jawad Khan, the
improper ang prolonged use of computers can result in injuries or disorders of
the hands, wrists, elbows, eyes, necks and back.
With these findings, it shows that there are also a number of
disadvantages caused by the computers to its users. Some disadvantages
focuses on their time, relevance of the information gathered and most
importantly to their physical and mental health.
36
Conclusions
Based from the foregoing findings, the following conclusions are drawn:
1. Majority of the respondents are 13 years old and are male.
2. The possible effects of computers and internet to the academic
performance of the students can be advantageous or disadvantageous.
3. The effects brought by computers vary on the way the students use
computer in their everyday lives whether at school or at home.
4. Those students who frequently use computers tend to achieve more in
their academic performance while those who moderately use computers
have a lower chance of success.
5. The most common effect of computers and internet in the academic
performance of the students is that it helps them to do things easier and
faster. They can search, type and make their homework, performance
task, and research in the most convenient way possible.
6. On the other hand, the most common effect of computers and internet in
the behavior and attitude, and the health condition of the students is that it
made them lazy and dependent on the convenience that computers can
offer.
37
Recommendations
Based from the above mentioned findings and conclusions, the following
recommendations are offered:
1. The parents and teachers must have a way to help their students utilize
computer in the most effective way possible.
2. Using computer for studying shall be guided by parents, teachers and
school administrators to administer the best use of computers for the
students.
3. The teachers or the school administrators can encourage the students to
use computer in their studies so that they apply computer as a tool of
improvement of the teaching - learning process.
4. The teachers may allow their students to make use of their computers and
internet for their homework, performance task and research. In this way,
the students can apply computers in their studies in the most efficient way.
5. In the contrary, everyone can control, limit and guide the students on how
they use computer as it may be the cause of a negative change in
behavior and attitude, and it can also be the cause for the students to
obtain a bad health condition. For this to be effective, they can set rules
for everyone to follow.
6. It is highly recommended to have an E Library at the School. It will have
computers with an internet connection and is open for everyone who will
do their homework, performance task or research. With this, the students
wont have to worry of going to computer shops or borrowing laptops or
38
computers from other people. It will not be necessary also for some
students to spend money in loading their broadband or pocket WiFi since
the E Library has an internet connection.
7. Enhancement activity proposed to bring positive effects on using
computers and internet for the academic performance of the students is
having an E Library with rules and regulations implemented for the
students to use it the right way to improve their academic performance.
