DESCRIPTION

Pre Sea Deck Cadet Training


Watchkeeper Deck
Royal Australian Navy (RAN) Bridging
Mate/Master < 500GT
Chief Mate / Master

This course is designed for students who wish to pursue a career in the international shipping
industry. The course will provide you with the education and training to require to safely
operate commercial vessels up to the level of a ships Master.
On completion of the course and relevant qualifying sea service, graduates will have the
knowledge and skills required to undertake an Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA)
oral examination for Certificate of Competency as a Deck Watchkeeper, Chief Mate and
Master.
Course content includes navigation, seamanship, cargo, marine legislation, shipboard safety,
management at operational and management level.
This course is fully compliant with the education and training requirements of the
International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for
Seafarers (STCW) as amended.
Further periods of sea-time and AMSA oral examinations will lead to Master Certificates of Competency

COURSE DELIVERY & Phase 1 Pre-sea education and training is delivered at the Newnham Campus (Launceston)
LOCATION
Phase 2 Shipboard Operational # Experience; at sea*
AMSA Marine Orders 71 legislates that students require to complete sea-time and Shipboard
Operational Experience workbooks prior to commencing Phase 3.
Phase 3 Watchkeeper Deck education and training at the Newnham Campus (Launceston)
Phase 4 Shipboard Management # Experience; at sea *
Phase 5 Chief Mate/Master education and training at the Newnham Campus (Launceston)
*A cadetship or employment with a shipping company is required in order to
complete the sea-time phases of this course. Employment may be sought either
before or after Year 1 (Pre Sea) studies.

ENTRY
REQUIREMENTS/

Satisfactory completion of:

Australian Year 12 (or equivalent) with a pass in Mathematics Applied (or equivalent)
Australian Year 12 (or equivalent) Physics or Chemistry or a Physical science subject.
Australian Year 10 pass in English (or equivalent)
Minimum Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR): 60 (or equivalent)
International students require IELTS of 6.0 with a minimum of 5.5 in each band (or
equivalent)

Domestic applicants who do not possess the prerequisites can undertake relevant foundation
units free of charge through the University to meet the required standard.

Watchkeeper Deck

Completion of AMSA approved Pre Sea Deck training (or equivalent) including
evidence of minimum of 6 months sea-time on vessels greater than or equal to 500GT
on company letterhead AND evidence of completion of approved monitored on
board training program. (Task and Guided Study workbooks)
OR
Certificate of Proficiency as Integrated Rating and completion of 24 months sea-time
as per Marine Order 71, and completion of an approved monitored on board training
program for Integrated Rating. (Task and Guided Study workbooks)
OR

Completion of 36 months sea-time as per Marine Order 71.


International students require IELTS of 6.0 with a minimum of 5.5 in each band (or
equivalent)

RAN Bridging Course Watchkeeper Deck - Only available to Domestic Students

RAN Bridge Watchkeeping / Warfare Certificate (BWC)

Mate/ Master < 500GT

Unrestricted Master Class 5 OR


Unrestricted Master <24metres NC (Near Coastal) COC (Certificate of Competency)

Hold or have held an restricted Master <35m NC (Near Coasta) COC (Certificate of

Hold an AMSA Watchkeeper Deck <500GT or Mate <500GT or Master <24m FG

Entry will be into Phase 5 of the course. Students who enter under this pathway will have previous study and
existing qualifications assessed for credit against phases 1 to 4.

GUIDANCE TO
STUDENTS

It is the students responsibility to make sure they meet the AMSA qualifying sea
service (QSS) as per Marine Order 71 schedule 2.

On completion of phase 1, students are required to apply to AMSA to gain their


Certificate of Safety Training (COST).

Medical requirements and an eyesight test as required by AMSA will apply to


certificate of competency students.
Students who intend to use qualifications gained at AMC to undertake national
regulators oral examination to gain a seagoing Certificate of Competency, are
reminded they will have to meet the regulators medical standard for employment on
board vessels.
If you have an existing medical or health problem and are concerned that this may
cause problems with a career at sea, it is suggested you undergo medical examination
PRIOR to giving up employment and travelling to Tasmania to commence studies.
As there are strict medical requirements for all seafarers you should ensure you meet
the regulators medical standard for employment on board vessels. To book an

Students who choose to embark on a seafaring career will be required to undertake a final
assessment with the AMSA and obtain a certificate of competency as a Deck Officer
(requirements specified by AMSA Marine Order 70 and 71).
