A New Outlook

2015

AER Ba'ery Subtypes

What are the dierences?

Presented by
Pascal Bonnet
Cenovus Energy Inc.

Facility Subtypes

2015

All facilities must be reported with the correct

facility subtype listed in the AER On-line
Supplement to Directive 007: Volumetric and
Infrastructure Requirements (2011-09)
The facility subtype is based on factors such as:

Well type
Measurement type
Physical flow
Purpose of Facility (What is the facility licensed for?)

Impact of Noncompliance

2015

Incorrect subtypes can cause non-compliance

issues. Each subtype has different data
requirements and different rules that should be
adhered to in order to avoid errors.
Examples of non-compliances due to incorrect
facility subtypes (found in CAI reports) :

Unacceptable oil proration factor Proration battery:

Proration factor should never be 1.00000 in a prorated
battery.

Impact of Noncompliance contd

2015

Invalid proration factor Non-prorated battery:

Tested wells should not be tied to a measured battery.
Linked Well Status Fluid Type Inappropriate for
Facility Subtype : Oil well tied to a gas battery.
Inappropriate Production Volumes Well Level:
Condensate cannot be reported in a shallow gas SEA
(363) battery.

Facility Subtype Impacts:

The proper facility subtype also determines:
Well Testing Frequency
How soon from initial production?
How often do we need to test again?
Well Testing Requirements
What kind of testing (3 phase, 2 phase, etc)?
How long must the test be?
Gas Sampling and Analysis Frequency
What type of sampling?
How often?

2015

Facility Subtype Impacts contd

2015

Acceptable AER Proration Factor Target Ranges

Conventional Oil Battery (subtype: 322)
oil = 0.95000 1.05000

water = 0.90000 1.10000

Heavy Oil Battery primary production and waterflood operations (subtype: 342)
Heavy Oil Battery thermal recovery operations (subtypes: 344 and 345)
oil = 0.85000 1.15000
water = 0.85000 1.15000
gas = no stated expectation due to generally low production volumes

Gas Proration Battery (subtypes: 363, 364)

gas = 0.8000 1.2000 (subtype 363* only)
gas = 0.90000 1.10000 (subtype 364 only)
water = 0.90000 1.10000 (subtype 364 only)

Gas Effluent Battery (subtype: 362)

gas = 0.90000 1.10000
water = 0.90000 1.10000

Crude Oil vs Bitumen Facilities

2015

So what is the difference between Crude

Oil battery codes, Heavy Oil battery
codes, and Crude Bitumen battery
codes?

Regions below are designated Oil Sands Areas

2015

Crude Oil vs Bitumen Facilities

2015

Crude Oil facilities INCLUDE all oil wells outside the

AER-designated oil sands area (OSA)
Heavy Oil wells outside the OSA are classified as
Crude Oil and are linked and reported as part of
Crude Oil batteries.
Heavy Oil wells inside the OSA are classified as
Crude Bitumen and must be linked and reported as
part of Crude Bitumen batteries.
Non-heavy Oil wells inside the AER OSA should be
classified as Crude Oil Facilities
Note that rules for Heavy/Crude Facilities are not as
stringent as Conventional (Crude) Oil facilities

No larger area then 6 contiguous townships

No need to report transactions between each well

Within the OSA the disposition = production

25

Gas Single Well Battery

Subtype 351: Gas Single Well Battery

Gas must be separated from oil/bitumen or emulsion

and measured as a single-phase;
Production is not commingled with production from
other wells before measurement or disposition.

Gas Multiwell Proration SE Alberta Bty

2015

A production facility for two or more shallow gas wells.

Production from each well is commingled and sent to a group
point with common separation, measurement, and storage.
Total battery oil, gas, and water production is prorated to
each well based on individual well tests and proration factors.
Shallow gas wells are wells that produce from the top of the
Edmonton Group to the base of the Colorado Group. (Coals
& Shales)
These production facilities cannot have condensate reported
Water is not required to be reported at the well level. Use
ABMC to balance.

Subtype 363 Gas Multiwell Proration SE Alberta Bty

Gas Multiwell Proration SE Alberta Bty

2015

Subtype 363 - Gas Multiwell Proration SE Alberta Bty

Testing:
Single phase
Requires only representative flow (<5 min)

Sampling:
Group meter only, Biennially. Use Group meter analysis for each well test
If non-shallow production present in Group meter, then take 1 sample per
pool/zone per facility, every 2 years

Gas Multiwell Proration Outside SE AB Bty

2015

Subtype 364 - Gas Multiwell Proration Outside SE AB Bty

A production facility for two or more Deep gas wells.
Generally used for low productivity gas wells with low
condensate or water production.
Wells at these facilities are tested and not continuously
measured*.
Production from each well is commingled and sent to a
group point with common separation, measurement, and
storage.
Water must be reported at a well level. (0.50 m3/d limit)
Largest well cannot exceed 16.9 e3m3/d
Average well production can not exceed 10.0 E3m3/d
Can be a mix of deep and Shallow wells

Gas Multiwell Proration Outside SE AB Bty

2015

Gas Multiwell Proration Outside SE AB Bty

2015

Subtype 364 - Gas Multiwell Proration Outside SE AB Bty

Testing:
3 phase separator
Typically 12 hours minimum
Needs testing at month 1, month 6, and then annually
If the initial testing with shows a liquid-gas ratio (LGR) of
less than 0.01 m3 liquid per e3m3 of gas, other testing
methodology, such as a smaller separator or a single test
meter without separation, can be used for the next test.
Testing frequency can be changed to match Shallow wells
if no liquids and notification sent to the AER

Gas Multiwell Proration Outside SE AB Btty

2015

Subtype 364 - Gas Multiwell Proration Outside SE AB Bty

Sampling:
Each well at the time of testing
Group meter annually
Well sampling can be changed to use representative pool
analysis per pool per facility (new AER D017, expected
2015-03)

Gas Multiwell Effluent Measurement Bty

2015

A production facility for two or more flow-lined gas wells

where each well is configured with continuous
measurement with no phase separation.
Production for each well is sent to a group point with
common separation, measurement and storage.
Well production is calculated and reported as prorated.
Gas volumes are corrected by the use of a Effluent
Correction Factor (ECF)
Typically use recombined analysis for component
allocation (Gas + GEV)

Testing & Sampling:

Most wells require annual testing

Minimum 12 hour test
Requires portal test separator, usually 3 phase
Must sample Gas & Condensate at time of testing
Condensate is converted to GEV which is added to
the Gas Volume
There are testing exemptions as per the Effluent
Decision tree (reduce testing, or complete exemption)
Figure 7.10 of Directive 17
Group points must be sampled annually

46

Water Source Battery

2015

Subtype 902 Water source battery

A production facility type for AER licensed source water

wells that are drilled to a depth of >150 m.
The linked wells may produce either freshwater (nonsaline <4000 total dissolved solids [tds]) or brackish water
(saline =>4000 tds).
If a source well is producing gas, the associated gas
production must be separated and measured or estimated
and reported.
Sampling: Initial Gas only if present
