Loch Ness Monster

Every year thousands of visitors arrive at Loch Ness in the hope of seeing the
Loch Ness Monster and perhaps even taking a photograph of her. Nessie, as the
creature is affectionately known, is a national treasure.
The legend of Nessie isn't new; she was first mentioned as early as the 6th
century, when Saint Columba, the Irish monk who converted most of Scotland to
Christianity, stopped the beast from eating an innocent passer-by. However, the
modern legend of Nessie really began in 1934 when Dr Robert Kenneth Wilson, a
London physician, claimed he had photographed a beast with a long neck emerging
out of the dark waters. There have been over 4,000 purported Nessie sightings since
then.
One of the latest videos was taken in May 2007. Gordon Holmes, a lab
technician from Yorkshire, took amazing pictures of an unknown beast swimming in
the lake. My initial thought was that it could be a very big eel; they have serpent-like
features which may explain all the sightings in Loch Ness over the years, he said.
Marine biologists take the case seriously: there is room in the lake for a huge,
unknown beast. In fact, theres room for a whole family of them: Loch Ness is the
largest and deepest inland expanse of water in the UK. It holds 263 thousand million
cubic feet of water, resulting in such low visibility below the surface of the loch that
exploration is difficult.
