CCSU LESSON PLAN TEMPLATE

Student Teacher: Miranda Welch

Lesson Date: 9/22/16

Grade Level: 5
Name of Lesson: Decimal Place Value and
Adding and Subtracting

Common Core State Standard(s)

CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.5.NBT.A.3
Read, write, and compare decimals to thousandths.
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.5.NBT.B.7
Add, subtract, multiply, and divide decimals to hundredths, using concrete models or drawings and
strategies based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between addition
and subtraction; relate the strategy to a written method and explain the reasoning used.

Student Learning Objective(s)

What is the intended learning outcome of this lesson? Be sure it is observable and includes
clear criteria.
Consider if there are students who will require an accommodation or modification to meet this
lessons objective.
Students will be able to recognize and write decimals to the thousandths place.
Students will be able to add and subtract decimals up to the hundredths place.
Rationale for Objective: How does this lesson support previous and subsequent
learning?
Students will practice writing and saying decimal numbers up to the thousandths place. After going
through the different practice methods, students will be able to understand how to add and
subtract decimals. They will already be familiar with adding and subtracting larger numbers.

Assessment
State the specific strategy (ies) and tool(s) used to collect the data for each SLO (i.e., essays,
projects, quizzes, exit slip, worksheet, etc.). Are there students who will require an
accommodation or modification to this lessons assessment?
Students will first practice on their Zap Zap Math accounts. Their progress can be checked on those
games. They will also receive a worksheet quiz at the end with different addition and subtraction
decimal problems and will have to name what the decimal number is.

Classroom Learning Environment Focus

(i.e., standards of behavior, routines, procedures, group work, transitions, instructional
arrangement, etc.). Explain specific needs.

CCSU LESSON PLAN TEMPLATE

All students will only use the computers and iPads for the assigned website or app. They wont eat
or drink anything while using these. They will show their usual standard of classroom behavior,
being quiet when someone is speaking and being respectful to everyone and the materials they are
using.

Instructional Model/Strategy
(i.e., concept formation, concept development, direct instruction, cooperative learning, inquiry,
discussion model). Explain how you will best facilitate student learning through a specific model of
instruction. Be sure to include a rationale for the chosen model(s). You may use more than one:
Direct Instruction - I will explain to students how to add and subtract decimals and the different
place values.
Concept Development - Students will understand this idea through the different technology
resources being used.
Cooperative Learning - Students will be divided into groups to know which activity to work on, but
they will still be working individually.
Materials/Resources needed for this lesson
-computers
- iPads
-smartboard/projector
-worksheet
- pencils

Daily Formative Assessment

How will you check for understanding and student achievement during the lesson?
The Zap Zap Math app will record and save their scores for the teacher to go back and look at.

Differentiating Instruction
How will you differentiate to meet the needs of your learners (i.e., what you teach, how you
teach, or how you will assess). Explain:
If students can not handle using the iPads or computers, I will give them a worksheet to work on
instead. If they need headphones to focus on what their iPad or computer is saying, they will be
able to have those as well.

Initiation
Cite how you will engage and motivate learners, activate prior learning and present the lessons
objective.
Explain: A) What they will be doing and learning in the lesson; B) How they will demonstrate
learning;

C) Why it is important to their everyday lives.
I will engage the students by first creating a class discussion about decimals to see what the know
so far. I will then show the video to get them more informed and interested in the topic. We will
discuss why decimals are important in their lives, such as having to add or subtract money.

Lesson Development
Cite how you will provide opportunities for the students to construct meaning. List the
steps/process you will follow. Be sure to identify how you will check for understanding and collect
formative data. Differentiate for students who will require an accommodation or modification in
order to be active participants in this lesson and state these strategies in the differentiation section
above.
1) The teacher will write a decimal up to the thousandths place. Ask students if they know what the
number is and what the different places are before and after the decimal.
2) After a short discussion with the students, play the video on
http://studyjams.scholastic.com/studyjams/jams/math/index.htm. When the video is over, students
will all individually go onto the computers or iPads and go to the same website.
3) On the Scholastic website, students will do the step by step practice, which breaks it down into a
slower pace.
4) Once all of the students have completed this, they will be divided into groups. Half of the class
will be working on the website http://www.mathplayground.com/ASB_Index.html while the other half
will be using the iPads to work on the Zap Zap Math app.
5) Students on the math playground website will be playing the games Puppy Pull Decimals,
Hungry Puppies and Puppy Chase Decimals. They can play these more than once if they have
time, but they have to play each game at least once.
6) Students on the Zap Zap Math app will play the Galactic Jones and Franken Wife games.
7) After 10 minutes, the groups will switch and the students will do the opposite activities.
8) Once the 10 minutes are up for the second activity, students will all take the quiz on the
Scholastic website. When they are done, students will raise their hands and I will go around to write
down their score.
9) After the teacher has recorded the score, students will out back the iPads or computers back and
make sure they are turned off properly.
10) Students will then sit at their seats and fill out some problems on a worksheet to see what they
did and didnt understand from their practicing.

Closure
How will you question students in order to evaluate if the objective(s) was met? How will you
question students to connect this lesson to previous and subsequent lessons as well as connect to
their own lives? How will you question students to see the relevancy of the lesson by
understanding the purpose/importance of the learning?
I will know if students met the objective by seeing how they did on their worksheets. I can also
check their scores on the games they played on the Zap Zap math app.
