AGRC7041 - Food Security Concepts

Name, Student No:
Assignment X - Discussion Board X Summary
1. The distribution of food around the world is unequal. Addressing this
inequality would go a long way to resolving food shortages and hunger.
Around the world we have the opposite extremes of people suffering from hunger and others
from obesity. Everyone has the right to food; there needs to be a more equal distribution of
food and better access for those suffering from hunger.

2. Within the food supply chain there are varying levels of power between
producers, retailers and consumers which can lead to non-sustainability.
Markets are an arena for power interactions and large retailers hold vast amounts of power in
the food supply market. They can place restrictions and conditions on growers and force
prices lower, leading to lower profit margins for growers.

3. National self sufficiency in food production is considered important by some

but is not always possible or practical.
For some being self sufficient in food production is integral to national sovereignty. Currently
corporate and foreign ownership of land and free trade are contributing to large amounts of
food being traded internationally and so less being available for domestic supply in some
countries. One hundred percent self sufficiency is generally not possible as not all products
can be grown in every countryetc etc etc

4. Corporations can and are playing positives roles in addressing food

insecurity.
Given that corporations can be much more flexible in their approach than governments and,
depending on their size, have more financial and human capital at their disposal they can play
an important role in addressing issues such as food insecurity. Key to this though is for
corporations to move beyond a focus only on financial gain.etc etc etc

5. Value added food can impact on food security, nutritional health, the
environment and food storage.
There are many ways that food can be value added. Some of these are positive for food
security, human health and the environment, such as making noodles from wheat that is then
easier to transport, store, market and consume. However, other forms of value adding can
lead to increased food prices, packaging, and waste management, energy and processing
costs as well as result in less healthy food. etc etc etc
