CALL FOR PARTICIPANTS

The Latin America Indigenous Funders Conference will be a unique event
that will bring together leaders from the indigenous, donor and corporate
worlds, with a view to promoting joint partnerships to support preservation
of livelihoods and development of the indigenous peoples.
The facts are clear:

Latin America tops the list of the worlds highest concentration of

biological diversity, holding more than 40 percent of the Earths
biodiversity, and more than one-quarter of its forests.

The lands, livelihoods and culture of millions of indigenous people in

the region face imminent threats from unsustainable resource
extraction, large-scale agricultural activity, and infrastructure
development projects in the region.

Indigenous peoples in Latin America have proven themselves to be the

best guardians of the regions natural resources.

As countries, corporations and communities around the world are

increasingly focusing their attention on developing effective ways to
decrease the effects of global warming, indigenous communities around
the world are providing solutions. The indigenous peoples are on the front
line of the defense of their territories and resources, facing threats that
become more and more frequent and serious.
We want to change that.

The Conference is dedicated to the memory of Berta Cceres who was murdered recently due to
her work as an activist. We are determined to ensure that this Conference allows us to obtain
concrete results as regards the murders of defenders of indigenous territories.

Overall Objective
Based on IFIPs previous experience in more than ten meetings, we anticipate that this conference
will result directly in the building of new networks and funding mechanisms for Latin America.
Those responsible for creating these new funding mechanisms noted the important role of the IFIP
convening in providing the impetus for funders who had been working separately on similar issues
in a given region to join forces and work together. Furthermore, donors were inspired to create
entirely new regional funds for Indigenous peoples.
Likewise, the Peruvian State has expressed its interest in the event by giving it a formal status
through the State Chancellery.
Organizers
The event is organized by International Funders for Indigenous Peoples (IFIP), an affinity group
of more than 50 foundations that support indigenous peoples worldwide. IFIPs mission is to
convene these crucial meetings between indigenous leaders and donors, which have resulted in the
creation of new and innovative support projects. IFIP works from a simple premise: that face-toface engagement is essential to indigenous philanthropy.
Themes
The theme of the conference is Buen Vivir: Supporting the Role of Indigenous Peoples in BioCultural Diversity, Human Rights and Sustainable Economic Models and every session will be
related to one of the following tracks:

Track1: Investing in Indigenous Models of Sustainable Development
