around5weeksthere.Ialsospent3weeksinthePhilippinesandjustbecauseofthe3
weektouristvisaatthattime.
OnewouldthinkthatbothbeingAsiancountries,theyshouldbeverysimilar,right?Butif
youhavebeentravelingforalongtime,thenyouknowitisnottrue.Ourexpectations
aboutdestinationsareusuallywrongorbetter,orworsethantherealityitself.

IfoundbothmanysimilaritiesanddifferencesbetweenThailandandPhilippines.

Similarities between Thailand and Philippines

BeachesBothThailandandthePhilippinescanbeproudoftheirbeaches.Youknow,all
thosebeautifulsecludedbeacheswithwhitesand,palmtreesandtransparentseacanbe
foundinbothcountries.Yes,welcometoparadise!EvenfamouspartyBoracayislandcan
bestillproudofitsstunningbeaches,suchasthelessvisitedPukabeach

PukabeachonBoracay,Philippines

IslandsBothcountriesconsistofmanyislands(Philippinesofthousandsmorethan
Thailand).Thereisabunchofislandsthatveryfewpeopleknowabout,thesmallerthe
islands,thebettertovisit(atleastIdopreferquietemptybeach.)
SmallgrocerystallsandstreetvendorsVerycommoninbothcountrieswhichmakes
itveryeasytomunchatthestreet.
RiceTrustme,aftervisitingthese2countriesIjustcouldnoteatriceagainanymore
whenIcamebackhometoSlovakia!Theyeveneatloadsofriceforbreakfast!What?
Whereismyfreshfruit?!Buttobehonest,IdidenjoyvisitingBatadriceterracesinthe
Philippines,suchanincredibleplace!However,sincemyfirstSEAsiatripIdontlikeeating
riceanymore.
FruitEasytogettropicalfruitandfreshcoconutsalmostanywhere.ThatsallIneedto
behappy!
WeatherAsyoucanimagine,weatherisveryalike.Hotandsunny,ormonsoonmonths.
Religiouslifepeopleofbothcountriesreallyliveareligiouslifealoteventhoughthe
religionitselfisverydifferent.
SeamanyThaiandFilipinoscannotswim.Ineverunderstoodthisthingasmostlypeople
fromcountrieswithnoseacanswimandthosethathavecoastscannot.Butthoselocals
whocan,inThailandandPhilippines,willjumpintotheseanotonlyinthebathsuit,butin
Tshirtsorevenjeans,especiallywomen.Itismorethanobviouswhoiswho,Imeanifyou
wanttodistinguishforeignfemaletourists(allinbikini)fromthoselocalones.Iunderstand,
differentcultureandpriorities.
Alcoholitseemsthatinthese2countriespeoplearejustnotbigalcoholfans.
Personally,IalmostsawveryfewFilipinos(apartfromthatcrazynightwhenweendedup
attheswimmingpoolat3.30am)andalsojustacoupleofThaipersonsdrinkingalcohol,
notevenwhenwewentoutatnight.Therearedefinitelylesspeopledrinkingalcoholin
these2countriesthansomewhereinEurope,forexample(atleastwhenIcompareitto
EasternSlovakiawhereIwasborn.)

Di ferences
PricesIwasreallysurprisedbutlifeinthePhilippinesisnotthatcheapasyouwould
expect.SomethingswerealotmoreexpensivethaninThailand,suchastransportation.
YouhavetopayairportandterminalfeesseparatelyinthePhilippineseverytimeyou
travelandtheywerenotincludedintheticketpricewhenIwastherein2011.Annoying!
TransportIthinkusingthepublictransportationinThailandwaswayeasierthaninthe
Philippines.ThebusesandtrainsarenotthatovercrowdedinThailandbutinthe
Philippines?OMG!Theyput20peopleinasmallvandesignedfor10peopletogetherwith
allthosehundredsofbagsandbackpacks.Tallpeoplelikemereallysuffer!
LongdistancetripsIfyouaregoingtotouristyplaces,inThailandtherearebustrips,or
busandboattripsorganizedthatwilltakeyouthere(suchasatriptoKohPhanganorKoh
Lanta).Tobuythesecondonedirectlytendstobecheaperthantobuyabusticketonly
andthentheboat/ferryticketseparately.Itreallyamazedmehowwellorganizedallthose
tripswere.Ateachtransferpointtherewassomeonewaitingforustotelluswheretogo.
ButinthePhilippinesIhaventreallynoticedsuchathing.IdontthinkitwasbecauseI
wastravelingtherewithmylocalfriends,butbecausethoseorganizedbus/boattripsjust
dontreallyexistedthere.

SpicyfoodMostofThaifoodisspicy,butnottheFilipinocuisine.Iamnotahugefanof
spicyfood,soIpreferredthefoodinthePhilippines.
FishInthePhilippines,fishisextremelycommontoeatforbreakfast,lunchanddinner.
Fishsoup,grilledfishandmanyotherwaysofpreparingfishkeptmealivewhenthere.I
eventriedcatfishasthatwasbeforeIbecamevegan(theycallithito)forthefirsttime
thereanditwasreallydelicious!(NowIamvegansoIwouldnteatanyfishanymore).

JunkfoodInthePhilippinestheyeatalotofjunkfood.Theyevenhavetheirlocalkind
ofMcDonaldsjunkfoodrestaurantcalledJollibeeandbelieveme,itcanbefound
everywhere!ThaipeopleseemtobehealthierandIdidntreallynoticemanyofthem
eatingfastfood.

LanguageObviously,ThaiandFilipinolanguageshavenothingtodowitheachother,
butnowImeanEnglishlanguage.InthePhilippines,Englishiswidelyspokenandforthem
itiskindofasecondlanguagewhileinThailandIfoundjustpoorEnglishandonlyin
touristyplaces(moreonislandsthaninBangkok,forexample.)

PeopleIhavetosaythatILOVEalltheFilipinos.Theyaresuperhelpful,nice,smilingall
thetime,hardlyeverinbadmood(apartfromsomebusdrivers).Thesayinggoesthat
ThailandisthelandofsmilesbutcomparingtoFilipinos,Ididnotfindthatmanynice
peopleinthere.Justtomakeanexample,IhavealotofFilipinofriendsjustafter3weeks
there,butnotevenonerealThaifriendaftervisitingThailandmorethan5times.Couldbe
alsobecauseofthelanguagebarrier,Iguess.

Smokingfornonsmokerslikeme,PhilippinesandThailandisatrueparadise!Veryfew
localssmokethere(atleastcomparingtoforexampleItaly,Spainorsomeothercountries
whereyouseesomanysmokers).

MassageThailandisoneofthebestcountriesintheworldtogetpamperedwitha
massage.Youcanchoosefrommanydifferentmassagesandtheycanbeverycheap.I
hadonealmosteveryday.Unfortunately,inthePhilippinesitisnotsocommon.

SexindustrysexchangesurgeryissopopularinThailandthatyouhavetobecareful
whenyoumeetaperfectsexyThaiwomanunlessyoudontcareshewasahebefore.

thehundredsthingsmanyThaiwomendoforliving(obviouslysomeofthemaretrickedto
that).AndthatfamousthingofThaigirlsmakingtheirlivingbyspendingtimewithold
foreignersisreallypresentineverydaylifeoftouristsvisitingThailandyouwillseethat
happeningeverywherearoundyou.ThisiswaylesscommoninthePhilippinesandduring
3weeksthereIdidnotseemuchofit,eventhoughIheardyoungFilipinas+oldforeigners
issuedoesexistthere,too.AndIonlysawoneladyboyinthePhilippinesanditwasduring
ashowanyway(personallyIdontmindthis).
