THIRD TERM ENGLISH TEST

Classes: 2ASS

Read the passage carefully then do the activities.

Africas dependence on outside food sources is growing at an alarming pace and
commercial imports of grain have risen at an annual rate of 9% during the past 20 years.
Africa imports 10 million tons of cereals, including current emergency needs. East Africa is
currently experiencing the worst drought to hit the region in the last 60 years.
Famine and drought are often considered one and the same. It is easy to think that
where there is drought, there is certainly famine. Both are caused by various conditions and
factors that sometimes have nothing to do with one another. Drought occurs when a body of
water, such as a stream or lake, falls below a certain amount: for example, in a dry year.
Famine is the decline in the availability of food often caused by drought. Although little can
be done to eliminate drought which occurs periodically in Africa, much can be done to avoid
famine. Drought has been transformed into famine by resource degradation, high population
growth rates, and the absence of growth in farm output. Famine in turn has been aggravated
by mistaken national policies and armed conflict. Moreover, Africa does not have the
potential to produce sufficient food for its increasing population.
Change depends greatly upon the ability of African governments to implement
effective national policies that support small farmers and encourage the development and the
use of relevant technology.
