The Divine Liturgy

Of Our Father Among the Saints

John Chrysostom
Complete Text and Hymnal
for Sunday Worship Services
in English and Greek
Let the people praise thee, O God;
Let all the people praise thee.
Psalm 67:3
A NOTE TO THE CONGREGATION

PRONUNCIATION GUIDE TO GREEK AND GREEK PHONETICS

Vowels: ah as in father; or eh as in bed; , , , , or ee as in
seed; or oh as in go; - long u as in you
Consonants: v as in vote; gutteral g almost like the y in yellow; voiced th as in
then; z as in zoo; unvoiced th as in thumb; k as in kept; l as in lamb;
m as in mother; n as in no; x as in tax; p as in pole; r as in root;
s as in so; t as in tall; f as in for; gutteral k as in the German word ach;
ps as in lapse
Combinations: or hard g as in gate or sometimes ng as in ring; ev as in
evzone or ef as in ephemeral; b as in boy; d as in dog
Greek also has many consonant blends not regularly found in English, such as mn, ts, ks, kt, and
sfr.
Accents and Breathing Marks in Greek: The placement of accents on syllables is important in
Greek. The most-used accents are Z and [. Some marks denote breathing and pronunciation.
Greek Phonetics: All music in this book has a phonetic transliteration beneath the Greek texts.
The English alphabet is used, and consonants are pronounced as they are in English with the
exception of the gutteral g which is represented by gh, the voiced th which is represented by dh,
and the gutteral k, represented by ch. (The English ch blend does not exist in Greek). The five
Greek vowel sounds are represented as follows: a = ah, e = eh, i or y = ee, o = oh, and ou = long
u. Conse-cutive vowels should be pronounced separately, e. g., zoin would be pronounced zoheen, not zoyn; eleison is pronounced eh-leh-ee-sohn.

One of the most ancient traditions of the one, holy, catholic, and
apostolic Church was for the participants in the services to join in
the singing of hymns. In recent years, there has been an effort on
the part of the Church to return to this tradition. Every Orthodox
service involves the laity, whose role is to actively pray. We hope
that this book will encourage you to, as in the words of St. Paul,
...with one mind and one mouth glorify the God and Father of our
Lord Jesus Christ. (Romans 15:6)
Scriptural hymn texts in English are adapted from the King James
Version of the Holy Bible. Other hymn texts were translated by N. Takis
or adapted by N. Takis from the translations of Fr. George Papadeas and
Fr. M. N. Vaporis.
