Each year thousands of new bands send

demo tapes or CDs of their music to record
companies but the record companies dont
listen to most of them. The pop music
industry is extremely difficult to break into.
The only way to get attention is for the group
to play at as many good venues (clubs, gigs
and concerts) as possible.
All record companies have A and R (Artist
and Repertoire) departments with special
talent scouts who go to concerts and gigs to
check out new bands. If a scout likes a band,
the record company will ask them to come
and play in the studio. And, if the band seems
to have talent, then the record company will
offer them a small contract with just enough
money to produce a couple of songs.

Five decades of pop music

1950s
In 1954 Elvis Presley walked into a recording
studio in Memphis and made his first record.
Some people think this was the birth of rock n
roll. Elvis was still a truck driver at the time
(earning $35 a week), but his music a mix of
black rhythm and blues, and white country and
western soon became popular with young
people all over the world.

1970s

The Beatles and The Rolling Stones

and other British groups introduced
sophisticated and strange lyrics and
exciting rhythms. In the mid-1960s
many singers and bands used music
to express teenage protest and
rebellion. This was also the beginning
of the hippy movement.

People remember the 1970s for punk music.

Punk was fast, loud and very aggressive.
Both bands and fans liked to shock people
by wearing safety pins through their skin
and having brightly-coloured hair. For a
punk band, musical talent was less
important than energy and attitude.

1990s

In the 1990s three types of music ruled.

House music was hypnotic and
repetitive and popular in clubs and
discos. Hip hop was the music of urban
black Americans and Techno was the
electronic music of Europe and the USA.
In the UK Brit pop also became popular.
Bands like Oasis and Blur produced
sounds similar to those in the 1960s.

1980s

This was the decade of electronic

music synthesizers and drum
machines. Music became visual
as pop videos became
increasingly popular. Videos are
now so important that no band
makes a record without making a
video to go with it.

The Notting Hill Carnival

In the 1950s and early 1960s, many people came to live in Britain
from the Caribbean, especially from the islands of Trinidad and
Jamaica. They brought with them their love of carnivals and
costume-making. The Notting Hill Carnival in northwest London
started with a small procession in the 1960s, a time of great racial
tension in London. Just a few people danced through the streets
in carnival costumes and played steel drums.
Over the years since then, the Notting Hill Carnival has grown
into a huge festival which takes place every year on the
last Sunday and Monday in August. It has developed into
an important multicultural event which reflects the nature
of modern British life. One of its central aims is
to bring black and white people together in
song and dance.
More than seventy bands complete the
carnival route and a further forty bands
are positioned on street corners, each one
playing different music. Millions of people
come to watch or take part and much of
the area is closed to cars. Only the famous
Carnival in Rio de Janeiro is bigger than
the one in Notting Hill.

Immigration to Britain
Britain is now a multiracial country, but immigration has been
a major political and social issue since the 1950s.
After the Second World War, Britain needed workers to help
rebuild its industries, and invited people from Commonwealth
countries to come to Britain to work. In the late 1950s many
immigrants from India, Pakistan and the West Indies came to
Britain. Serious social tension developed and violent riots
broke out in London and several other major cities. In the
summer of 1958, the area around Notting Hill in London was
the scene of one of the worst riots.
Over the years, attitudes have slowly changed and British
people have become less insular. Laws have been passed to
protect the rights of immigrants. Britain today is more tolerant
than it was forty years ago, but racial tensions still exist as
people learn to live together in a multiracial society.

Why did a lot of people come to Britain from the Commonwealth in the 1950s?

English Football Academies

There are ninety-two football clubs in the English football league. Thirtyeight of them have football academies. These are special football schools
for young footballers from the age of eight to twenty-one. The aim of these
academies is not only to develop football skills but also to develop allround life skills. These clubs help the players to lead healthy lifestyles
by giving advice on diet, nutrition and sports psychology. In return
they have to commit themselves to improving their football
skills and, of course, keeping themselves fit and healthy.
After the age of sixteen, the young footballers train for at
least twelve hours a week, and they must also spend another
twelve hours a week studying. Clubs with academy status,
therefore, have to provide suitable facilities not only for
football training but also for school or college
work a homework room, for example. By
the time the players are eighteen
the club has to tell them if it is
going to offer them a
professional contract or not.

Although he came from a poor Brazilian family, Pel was probably
the greatest footballer the world has ever seen. He was only 15
years old when he joined Santos of So Paulo. In 1958, when he
was only 17, he played for Brazil in the World Cup final (which Brazil
won for the first time). He went on to play for his country 110 times
and played in four World Cup finals. He scored a total of 1,363 goals.
In 1974 he left Brazil to play for the New York Cosmos in the USA.

Martina Hingis is one of the best women tennis players in the world.
Born in Slovakia in 1980, she comes from a middle-class family. Her
mother, a former tennis champion herself, introduced Martina to
tennis at the age of three. By the time she was five she started to
enter tournaments. She moved to Switzerland with her mother when
she was seven and she was just twelve years of age when she won
her first junior Grand Slam event at the French Open. Between
sixteen and eighteen, while other girls of her age were studying for
school exams, Martina won five Grand Slam titles. By the time she
was eighteen, she had earned more than $10,000,000.

Where is Bath in relation to London?

What is special about the city of Bath?

Why was Bath fashionable in the eighteenth century?
What colour are the Georgian houses in Bath?

Bath
Bath is situated about 180 km west of London on the River Avon. It is
probably Englands most perfect example of an eighteenth-century city and
is also the site of important Roman remains.
Bath was originally founded by the Romans on the site of a natural hot
spring. Between the first and fifth centuries AD the Romans built a
magnificent temple there and a complex system of baths. These baths were
rediscovered in 1755 and Bath became a fashionable place for wealthy
people to visit and bathe in the hot mineral waters.
As well as wealthy and influential people, such as architects, Kings George
III and George IV frequently visited the city. Bath was soon transformed
into an elegant spa resort with beautiful Georgian buildings in the local
honey-coloured stone.
Today, Bath is still a very popular destination for visitors. Tourists come
from all over the world to see the fascinating Roman remains and the
attractive Georgian architecture.

Students in higher education in Britain used to receive free tuition. In

England and Wales this is no longer the case. Students now have to
contribute about 1,000 a year towards their tuition fees. The Government
also no longer gives grants to pay living expenses, such as accommodation,
food and books, but students can take out a loan to pay for these. They
have to repay this loan when they start a full-time job.
Students, like Rachel Webbe, try to find some kind of work
while they are at university. Many work in restaurants,
small shops or supermarkets in the evenings or during
vacations. Others may be luckier and find work which
relates to the subject they are studying at university or
college. For example, some students at film school can
sometimes be lucky enough to work on a film or video
