St Luke Holy Apostle & Evangelist

St Luke was a well educated Physician and excellent artist of Antioch in Syria.
Having heard about our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ, St Luke travelled to Palestine
and fervently accepted the Divine Truth of our Eternal Salvation from our Lord
Himself, and as one of His 70 Apostles, St Luke was sent forth to prepare the
people by preaching the Kingdom of Heaven, which became accessible for all
mankind from then on. (Luke 10 : 1 3)
After the unjustified and unlawful arrest, trial, torture and crucifixion of Christ the
Apostles were in a state of uncertainty, and as St Luke and St Cleophas walked
along the road to Emmaus on the Third Day, discussing all these shocking Events,
our Resurrected Lord Jesus Christ accompanied them, although they did not
recognise Him until He Blessed their supper that evening.
He eventually accompanied St Paul, the Great Holy Apostle to the Gentiles, on several
of his Spiritually Fruitful Missionary Journeys. ( P H I L I P P I A N S 1 : 2 4 & 2 T I M O T H Y 4 : 1 0 11)

St Luke had accompanied St Paul on his Second Missionary Journey, and from that time
on they were inseparable.
After St Pauls co-workers had forsaken him, only St Luke remained to faithfully assist
him in his Holy Ministry, until his execution and Spiritual Perfection by sword,
when St Luke left Rome to preach in Achaia, Libya, Egypt and the Thebaid. ( 2
TIMOTHY 4:10-11).

Just like all the other Holy Apostles of Christ our Lord and Saviour, (with the exception
of St John the Beloved Apostle and Theologian) St Luke was eventually martyred in
the city of Thebes, Egypt.
St Luke being an accomplished Iconographer - wrote the first Holy Icons of our Ever
Blessed Lady, Theotokos who had commented: Let the Grace of Him Who was born
of Me and My Mercy be with these Icons.
St Luke also wrote Holy Icons of the First-Ranked Apostles, St Peter and St Paul.
Circa 62-63 while he resided in Rome and was under the Spiritual Guidance of St Paul
(as well as Theotokos in Jerusalem,) St Luke wrote his Holy Gospel.
In the preliminary verses, St Luke precisely set forth the Purpose of his work. He
proposed to record, in chronological order, everything known by the Disciples and
Apostles of Christ concerning our Lord Jesus Christ and His Divine Teachings
His Divine Truth. ( L U K E 1 : 1 - 3 )
By doing this, St Luke has provided us with a firmer historical basis for Christian
Teaching ( L U K E 1 : 4 )
He had most carefully investigated all the facts, and had made generous use of the
Oral Tradition of the Church, as well as everything that the All-Pure, Most Holy
Virgin Mary Herself had told him. ( L U K E 2 : 1 9 & 5 1 ) .
In the Holy Gospel According to St Luke, the Divine Message of our Eternal Salvation,
which is made possible only by our Lord Jesus Christ, and the Teaching the
Divine Truth - of His Holy Gospel, are of primary importance.
St Luke also wrote the Book of the Acts of the Holy Apostles in Rome circa 62-63,
which is a continuation of the four Books of the Holy Gospels - concerning the
Works and the Fruits of the Holy Apostles after the Ascension of our Saviour, and
the Descent of the Holy Spirit Who makes everything that is impossible for
mankind, possible, by means of His Divine Power and Energy, according to the Will
of God the Father.
At the center of the narrative is the Council of the Holy Apostles in Jerusalem in the
year 51 - an Event of great significance, which resulted in the separation of
Christianity from Judaism, and its independent dissemination into the world. ( A C T S

The Holy Relics of St Luke were taken from Constantinople to Padua, Italy during the
infamous Crusade of 1204.
In 1992, Metropolitan Hieronymus (Jerome) of Thebes requested the Roman Catholic
Bishop in Thebes to obtain a portion of St Lukes Holy Relics for the Saints
emptied sepulchre in the Orthodox Cathedral in Thebes.
The Roman Catholic Bishop, Antonio Mattiazzo of Padua - noting that innumerable
Orthodox Pilgrims went to Padua to venerate the Holy Relics while many Roman
Catholics were unaware of, or ignored, them - appointed a Committee to
investigate the Holy Relics of St Luke that were in Padua, and his skull, which was
located in the Roman Catholic Cathedral of St Vico in Prague.
The Holy Relics were identified as being those of ...an elderly man of strong build.
In 2001, a tooth that had been found in the casket of St Luke was consistent with the
DNA of Syrians who had lived in the region of Antioch - dated between72-416.
The skull that had been located in Prague perfectly matched the neck bone of the Holy
Relics of St Luke, and the tooth positively fitted into the jawbone of the skull.
Bishop Mattiazzo sent a rib from the Holy Relics of St Luke the Apostle and Evangelist
to Metropolitan Hieronymos to be preserved and venerated in St Lukes original
tomb in the Orthodox Cathedral in Thebes, Egypt.

Thee in his Epistles, calling Thee, O
Luke, his fellow Labourer and
Beloved Physician, O Evangelist.
Thou were together with him in his
Struggles, and Thou shared the
Crowns with him as well. And now,
with one voice, to Thee we cry out:
Pray to the Lord to Save our souls.

At

Thy conceiving without seed, O

Theotokos, Joseph was struck with
wonder as he contemplated what
was beyond nature, and he brought
to mind the Dew on the fleece, the
Bush unburnt by Fire, Aarons Rod
that blossomed; and Thy Betrothed
and Guardian bore witness and cried
unto the Priests: A Virgin bears a
Child, and after Child-birth, remains
still a Virgin!
