Manufacturing Management Integrated Project- first semester

Fall 2016
According to the Presidents Council of Advisors on Science and Technology
Report: companies who have implemented advanced manufacturing techniques
are experiencing 20% increase in profitability. Most of these technologies are
already available; the challenge for companies is to figure out which ones to use,
and how to put them into practice.
The following is the list of projects:
1 Advanced Robotics
2 Additive manufacturing
3 Advanced materials -Nanoengineered materials
4 Knowledge based manufacturing
5
Energy Efficiency and Cost Reduction
Tentative Outline of the Report
1. Executive summary. The report must begin with a one-page abstract that
orients the reader as to the contents as well as to the major sections of the
report. The executive summary should highlight the problem, the
methodology and recommended solutions and conclusions. The abstract,
by itself, must provide enough information about the project so that the
reader can judge simply by reading this portion if he or she wants to read
further.
2. Table of contents. Including appendixes and figures
3. Introduction. This first segment should present a brief history of the
problem and what is the purpose of your research. Be brief and succinct,
but make sure that the reader can obtain a perspective of the problem.
4. Definition of the technology. In this section, discuss the following two
aspects. First, briefly outline the nature of the technology; what is it?
Second, in more detail, examine why it is relevant. What technology is
substituting?
5. Industry application/uses. Describe in what industries the technology is
used and what is the potential application. Illustrate with case examples.
6. Cost and savings. Indicate the cost of implementing the technology and
the savings associated to it.
7. Manufacturing processes. Explain the manufacturing processes when
applicable
8. Health and safety. Describe risks and safety issues related to the
technology
9. Recommendations or Action Plan. Make specific recommendations
aimed at solving all of the present and future problems.
10. Exhibits, tables, and figures. All calculations, figures, and other
graphical or numerical information should be summarized in this section.
Additionally, any appendix, exhibit, table, and/or figure attached to the
report must be typed and referred to in the report.
1 Semester Integrative Project: Report guidelines

11. You will be using what you are learning in project management course to
complete this project. Therefore, as part of the deliverables of the project
you will include: Scope planning , Work Breakdown structure, Resource
Allocation, Phase timelines and Milestones etc. in order to complete the
project and enrich the presentation.
Project report advances
Week 4: Scope planning, Work Breakdown structure, leader of each section and
team work.
Week 6: First progress report (Sections 3, 4, 5 and 6)
Week 9: Second progress report (Sections 7, 8, 9, 10 and table of content and
executive summary)
Week 11: Final report due
Week 14: Creative presentation
Submissions through Slate (dropbox) and hardcopy
The project approach.
The project approach offers an excellent opportunity for students to:
1. explore, in modest depth, operations management decisions in
realistic situations, or
2. explore a technology of interest, or
3. propose a solution of an actual business problem, or
4. develop a business plan
Instructions for Group Project.
1) Students will work in groups of 3 or 4 students.
2) The group members will break the project into equal parts and each take a
section of the group research (as agreed with the Professor). Group
members are encouraged to work with other members as a team.
3) Each group member will take responsibility for completing their part of the
research project in time to coordinate the groups written submission and
verbal presentation to the class.
4) Group members will jointly prepare a written presentation to be submitted
in a report format.
5) Each group will present their report in a verbal format using aids such as
PowerPoint and Excel to the class. It is expected that each member of the
group will have a part in this presentation.
6) Marks will be assigned based on the group interaction, the depth of the
research and the quality of the presentation. See rubric in the appendix
Guidelines for Report Preparation
2 Semester Integrative Project: Report guidelines

The written report should be organized in a presentation binder and follow these
guidelines.
The verbal report should be 20 to 25 minutes long and be presented in such a
way that each member of the group participates. Computerised presentation aids
should be used as appropriate.
The report should be uploaded in Slate two days before the presentation.
General Format
1. The report must be typed, double-spaced using Times New Roman 12.
2. Report covers are a choice of the group, but must allow the report to lie
flat when open.
3. The report must have a title page
4. Use subheadings within the report when appropriate following APA style.
5. A table of contents page is necessary.
6. The report must have bibliography and should consist of at least 20 to 25
pages of double spaced typed information. Illustrations should be added to
the report to emphasize the principles.
7. Sources of information should be indicated throughout the document,
including quotes
8. Plan the report carefully to develop an organized and non-redundant
report. It should be organized and assembled as a continuous report and
should not appear to be several independent segments bound together.
