NOT YOUR USUAL 20/20
Nationals SS Danny Espinosa was hit with a pitch in the fourth inning on Monday, the 20th
time hes reached base via a hit-by-pitch this season...Espinosa, who has clubbed 21 home
runs this year as well, is the first switch-hitter in Major League history to go 20-20 with home
runs and HBP...He is the 20th player in Major League history to accomplish the feat...Craig
Biggio did it four times (most in MLB history) from 1995-2001.
THIS IS FORTY...ONE
Nationals closer RHP Mark Melancon secured his 41st save of the season in Sundays win,
posting a scoreless ninth to lock things down...This is the second consecutive season Melancon has reached the 40-save mark after he earned 51 saves with Pittsburgh in 2015.
Per Elias, with 30 of his saves coming for PIT and 10 with WSH, Melancon became the fifth
pitcher to earn 40 or more saves in a season in which he pitched for more than one team...
He joined: Jeff Shaw (CIN & LAD,1998, 48 saves), Lee Smith (STL & NYY,1993, 46), Matt
Capps (WSH & MIN, 2010, 42), and Huston Street (SDP & LAA, 2014, 41).
THE TALENTED MR. TURNER
CF Trea Turner went 2-for-5 with a stolen base (24) and a run scored on Monday, his 28th
multi-hit game of the season (in 55 G played), continuing a terrific stretch for the rooki that
included the first walk-off home run of his young MLB career (and first he could remember
since Little League) on Friday night, as well as his first career multi-homer game.
Since 1958 (the first season with official rookie designations) Turner is the fourth with at
least two homers, including a walk-off, in a game he hit in the leadoff spot...Via Elias, he
joins Paul Serna (1982, SEA), Reed Johnson (2003, TOR), and Aoki (2012, MIL).
Now batting .345 this season, Turners average, per Elias, is the highest at any point by
a Major-League rookie at least 200 at-bats into a season in three years -- since LAD OF
Yasiel Puig was hitting .344 through Sept. 8, 2013.
