COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course enables students to demonstrate critical reading skills with selected expository
and argumentative literature; apply principles of development, unity, and coherence in
college-level writing; select and use appropriately a variety of rhetorical modes in
analytical thinking and writing; demonstrate a command of college-level sentence skills in
writing that evidences sentence variety and complexity, precise vocabulary, and
appropriate diction, as well as standard English grammar, spelling, usage, and mechanics;
and apply basic research and documentation skills.

Materials for Success

1 binder (you will be getting multiple handouts during the course of the school
year, so this will come in handy for you to organize all teacher-provided material).
Dividers are strongly recommended.
Paper
Pencils and blue/black pens
Highlighters and/or 1 pack of colored pencils for textual annotations
An open mind and dedication to learning

Classroom Policies

LATE WORK
1-day late: 50% reduction of the grade.
2 or more days: Work not accepted.
*This applies to classwork and homework.
*If work is late due to an excused absence, it is the students responsibility to make
arrangements with me for work submission.
MAKE UP WORK
All make-up work is the students responsibility. The student must collect the work on
their own.
1. Check the Daily Agenda for the day(s) you missed.
2. Select the coordinating worksheet/notes/assignment for that (those) days.
3. If you were absent for ONE day, then you have TWO days to collect the missing work
and complete it. If you were absent for TWO days, then you have FOUR days to
collect the missing work and complete it, and so on and so forth.
4. If you have any questions for me, you must ask me before or after class, not during.
5. Acceptance of make-up work is at the teachers discretion. Do not wait to collect
and complete your work once youve missed the allotted time to collect your
work, I will not accept the make-up work.
BATHROOM/HALL PASSES
*No bathroom/hall passes are given during the first and last 10 minutes of class. This is in
accordance with school policy.

*If you want to use the restroom, you must fill out a pass AND sign the Hall Pass
Clipboard.
ALL PASSES MUST HAVE THE FOLLOWING ITEMS ON IT:

My signature
You must wait for an appropriate time for me to sign it.
If your pass does not have these items, then I will not sign the pass for you to leave.
Remember to sign back in. If you do not, I can write you up for skipping.
CELL PHONES
Cell phone use is strictly prohibited during class. The usage of a cell phone during class
will result in a total loss of Speaking & Listening points for the day. Continued use of a cell
phone will result in the confiscation of the phone per the schoolwide policy.
WORK SUBMISSION
All work homework, classwork, quizzes, and essays must be submitted with the
proper heading in the left-hand corner of the page:
1. Student Name
2. Teacher Name
3. Class Period
4. Date
A title must also be present and located in the center of the page on the top line.
Last name and page number located in the top right-hand corner of each page.

Classroom Expectations

Respect everyone and everything treat your peers, me, yourself, and the classroom
with the utmost respect. This classroom is a safe space for everyone.
Be prompt to class. Being late to class will result in an automatic trip to the Nest.
Find your seat quickly and be prepared to work as you soon as you get into the
classroom.
Participate! You have a voice and you are actively encouraged to use it to add to the
ongoing classroom conversation. This is essential to the speaking/listening grade.
Class is what YOU make it. Make it a place YOU want to come to every day.
