Rationale
Numbers all around will be explored in this unit through words and
symbolic representation using expressions and equations. These are all
important as they continue on in math and other subjects. It also has a
usefulness in day to day life and in the work world; where throughout
the unit there will be examples of problems relating to life and there will
also be a project that the students will choose and present on a number
system of their choice. The concepts learned help with problem solving
and algebraic reasoning. This unit will incorporate all seven
mathematical processes: [C] Communication [PS] Problem Solving [CN]
Connections [R] Reasoning [ME] Mental Mathematics [T] Technology and
Estimation [V] Visualization.
This unit takes on the ideas that number systems are part of society;
and numerals can be expressed in different ways such as words,
symbols, and visual representations. They will make connections and
reason how best to solve problems with real world examples.
The unit starts out with number systems, starting with our currently
used system, then learning about different countrys systems. This ties
well into the inquiry statement: the system in which quantities are
communicated makes part of a societys culture. Math is commonly
used in the world, this unit will show how there are different number
systems used in the world. Determining prior knowledge and
expectations before will help set a foundation for the project. Then go
on to Whole number operations of addition, subtraction, multiplication,
and division to give them a foundation for order of operations,
divisibility, factors, multiples, primes and composites. These are all
important concepts to master as they continue on in math and life.

Describe how you will differentiate teaching & learning for this unit?
- Math club on Tuesday lunchtime for weaker students
- Occasionally additional exercises (homework) for weaker students
- Faster/stronger students complete more challenging questions at the end of the lesson
- More attention for weaker students during the lesson
Learning Process
With the assessment tasks students also receive the rubrics.
Collaboration with the teacher of grade 6 to understand prior knowledge. The speed of teaching is adjusted
to their knowledge which is checked though questioning in the beginning of the unit.
Students' work is checked regularly and self-checked with the answers available in the textbook.
Teaching methods include front-teaching, exercises from the book, additional exercises from the web,
checking the work of a peer, team-work, and presentations.
Special attention is given to non-fluent speakers, especially during the preparation of the assessed
presentation.
Peers and the teacher help translating the concepts into Italian, when needed. Students may ask for unknown

Description
To gage how well students understood
concept to be completed at the end of
class. This will be handed in, visual, or
verbal. If I need quick assessment for that
days material, exit slip will be done. Near
end of unit, exit slips will be used to help
make questions for the who wants to be
a millionaire review game.
Get students talking about math. It will
help for clarification among students and
teacher assessment to check for
understanding. Forms of table
discussions, and rally robin will be used
throughout the unit. This variety will allow
for more learning to take place because
students can hear the concept explained
different ways.
Gets class thinking about math. It reviews
concept previously learned. This helps
teacher assess how well the concept was
learned and if anything needs to be
clarified before they go on to the next
material.
There will be two written quizzes
throughout the unit at the end of each
chapter. These will be handed back for
students to make corrections for
understanding how they can improve,
then handed back in. They can also be
used to study from in class review for the
unit exam.
Gives students individual practice for
their learning. Homework checks will be
done a week before each quiz. Answers
are in the back of the text for students to
check their work.
A final written unit test will be given at
the end of the unit. Throughout the unit
students have been preparing, there will
be a review before.

Summative: there are 2 quizzes and a unit test, along with a project. Throughout the unit
there will be plenty of time to prepare and work for understanding. As long as students are
on task and trying their best, they will do well. They will make corrections on quizzes for
further learning.
Formative: Assignments and text questions given to help prepare for the summative.
