Unit 1: Introduccin a Latinoamrica (Indigenous groups)


Core topic: Global Issues (Poverty, Racism, prejudice, discrimination), Social
Relations (Minorities)
Optional topic: Cultural Diversity (Population Diversity)

Integration of Global Education:
Students will be able to understand how diverse the population of Latin
American is and also their current situation.
Students will be able to learn about the discrimination towards indigenous
groups in Guatemala.
Students will read articles from newspapers and magazines in Spanish to learn
about indigenous languages and traditions in Latin America.
Students will read about an indigenous activist, Rigoberta Mench and her
work to end the discrimination against indigenous groups not just in her
country but also in the rest of the continent.
Students will be able to communicate their ideas and take action to help a
group of indigenous people.
Specific lesson Plan Modifications for Global Competencies
Students will watch the movie Diarios de Motocicleta and will take notes on
the situation of indigenous groups in Per.
Students will watch section of the documentary Cuando las montaas
tiemblan, narrated by Rigoberta Mench and will be take notes on the
situation of the Quich-Maya group in Guatemala and the reasons that
Rigoberta had to become an activist.
Students will interview a Quich-Maya living in Florida in order to understand
if moving to the United States has helped solved some of the problems they
faced in Guatemala.
Informal Outcome Assessments
Students will write a diary entry, pretending to be a friend of Ernesto or
Alberto from the movie Diarios de Motocicleta. They will propose how to help
indigenous groups in Per by create a student organization in their school.
Students will write an essay comparing the situation of the Quich-Maya
groups in Guatemala in the 1980s to the situation of the members of the same
group that now live in the state of Florida.
Identify how you could integrate global education into each standard.
Cite specific lesson plan modifications for each standard that demonstrate
global competencies.

Develop an informal outcome assessment (i.e. the work the students will do to
demonstrate their learning, specifically as it relates to the standard + global
competencies).

Unit 2: Derechos Humanos (Human Rights)

Integration of Global Education

Students will read and analyze the Declaration of Human Rights.


Students will read articles related to Human Rights violations in Latin
American in the past 30 years and will analyze the situation of those countries
now.
Students will be able to express their ideas using art and words to portrait
violation of Human Rights occurring now in different parts of the world.

Specific Lesson Plan Modifications for Global Competencies

Students will read the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in Spanish and
will share in class which article is more important for them.
Students will read articles in the target language to learn about violation of
human rights in Latin America.
Students will watch the movie Voces Inocentes to learn about the violation
of human rights during the Civil War in El Salvador during the eighties.

Informal Outcome Assessments

Arte como medio de protesta: in groups of 4 students will create two or three
puzzle pieces that will represent one of the articles of the declaration of
Human Rights and will also present an example of a violation to that article
that is happening now or had happened in the past 10 years.
Students will work in the same groups to create a PowerPoint or prezi
presentation that will explain in details the article they choose from the
Declaration and also examples. They must present this in class in Spanish.
