2016 - 2017 Master Course Lesson

Content Area Grade 8

1st Cycle Unit 3 Lesson 1 of 4
Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) (student friendly language)
Mathematical Process Standards. The student uses mathematical processes to acquire
and demonstrate mathematical understanding. The student is expected to:
MATH.8.1B Use a problem-solving model that incorporates analyzing given information, formulating a plan or
strategy, determining a solution, justifying the solution, and evaluating the problem-solving process and the
reasonableness of the solution.
MATH.8.1D Communicate mathematical ideas, reasoning, and their implications using multiple representations,
including symbols, diagrams, graphs, and language as
appropriate.
Expressions, Equations, and Relationships. The student applies mathematical process standards to use onevariable equations or inequalities in problem situations. The student is expected to:
MATH.8.8A Write one-variable equations or inequalities with variables on both sides
that represent problems using rational number coefficients and constants.
MATH.8.8B Write a corresponding real-world problem when given a one-variable equation or inequality with
variables on both sides of the equal sign using rational number
coefficients and constants.
MATH.8.8C Model and solve one-variable equations with variables on both sides of the equal sign that represent
mathematical and real-world problems using rational number
coefficients and constants.
College and Career Readiness Standards (CCRS)

CCRS 1.B1 Perform computations with real and complex numbers.

CCRS 2.C1 Recognize and use algebraic (field) properties, concepts, procedures, and algorithms to solve
equations, inequalities, and systems of linear equations.
CCRS 2.C2 Explain the difference between the solution set of an equation and the solution set of an inequality.
CCRS 2.D1 Interpret multiple representations of equations and relationships.
CCRS 2.D2 Translate among multiple representations of equations and relationships

English Language Proficiency Standards (ELPS)

ELPS C.1e Internalize new basic and academic language by using and reusing it in meaningful ways in speaking
and writing activities that build concept and language attainment.
ELPS C.4d Use prereading supports such as graphic organizers, illustrations, and pretaught topic-related
vocabulary and other prereading activities to enhance comprehension of written text.
ELPS C.2f Listen to and derive meaning from a variety of media such as audio tape, video, DVD, and CD ROM to
build and reinforce concept and language attainment.

Guiding Questions/Learning Goals

(A) Equations are used to express relationships between two quantities.
1 How can equations with variables on both sides be represented?
2 What method can be used to isolate variable terms on one side of an equation?
3 How are equations with rational number coefficients and constants solved?
4 How many solutions can a one-variable equation have?

2 How can the process of solving an equation be modeled?
(C) Verbal representations of real-world situations translate into algebraic expressions or equations.
1 How do verbal expressions translate into algebraic expressions?
2 Why is it important to translate verbal representations into algebraic expressions or equations?
(D) Inequalities can be used to represent relationships between two quantities.
1. How does an inequality differ from an equation?
2. How are inverse operations used to solve inequalities?
How is an inequality used to represent constraints or conditions within problem situations?

Prior knowledge for the students by grade level:
In grade 5, students represented and solved multi-step problems involving the four operations using equations with a
letter standing for the unknown quantity.
In grade 6, students
o
wrote, modeled, and solved one-variable, one-step equations; and
o wrote, modeled, and solved one-variable, one-step inequalities.
o wrote corresponding real-world problems given one-step inequalities.
In grade 6 Pre-AP, students
