22nd SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

Dear Parishioners,
Our first reading today from Ecclesiasticus is in the form of a
father giving good advice to his son.
The letter to the Hebrews speaks of the new covenant, the
instigator and mediator of the new life of God.
In the gospel, we see Jesus going for a meal and they watched him closely. The
Pharisees were hoping to bring some accusation against him. What a difference it makes
when someone is supportive and friendly, as opposed to somebody who wants to find
fault.
As ever, Jesus observes what is going on around him. he sees the guests at the meal
jockeying for places of honour in the front seats (as in most Catholic Churches!), he uses
this situation to remind his followers, and us, how to behave humbly and not expect
special treatment we are all equal in Gods eyes. We are invited to navigate on an even
keel, those tricky human relationships we are part of.
WELCOME, GOODBYE, FAREWELL there is a good deal of comings and goings
these days.
On Tuesday, we say goodbye to Fr Tom who returns to his Jesuit ministry in Seattle,
USA. We thank you Fr Tom for being with us during the summer and wish you well in
your lecturing.
We welcome, Fr Damian Ryan, our new assistant priest who will arrive on Friday.
We hope hes had a good holiday since his ordination. We look forward to him being with
us at St John Vianney and that he will be happy here.
In due course, we will be saying farewell to Sr. Clara as she will be taking up a new
appointment in Spain. An official goodbye will be arranged in due course. We welcome
Sr. Catherine, Sr. Devy, Sr. Emiliana who will be joining Sr Monica in the Verbum Dei
Community Fraternal. We wish then well as we open a new chapter in the Verbum Dei
Community and in the parish staff.
NEW TERM: As the Summer holidays draw to a close and a new term begins, we
have our Parish Catechetical Programmes starting up soon I ask parents whose young
people are due to prepare for sacraments to make sure registration is completed.
This request has been on the cards many, many weeks. Please dont be arriving with
requests when all has begun and then wonder why I might get annoyed!!
Please see the note on the PLANNED GIVING CAMPAIGN.
70th BIRTHDAY: Thanks, to all who have already sent cards and gifts to me for my
birthday. It is very much appreciated and also humbling because of your generosity. The
11th September will see an end to one of the most drawn-out celebration ever, longer than
the Queen!
Thats all for now. Have a good week. Fr Joe
