Arm Wrestling coming to town!

We dont recall an exact year

when the Wagon Wheel Bar
in Nashua discontinued their
annual arm wrestling event, but its been a while.
All we can say is get to practicing this competitive
sport, because arm wrestling is coming to Alleys Palace
in Glasgow! It will be held on Saturday, September 10th
beginning at 6:00 p.m. (weigh-ins are on Friday the 9th
from 7-10 p.m. and on Saturday from 3:00-5:00).
Tony Thomlison, who has family here and is a good
friend of Teddi, is bringing the show in from Colorado,
aptly named the Northern Colorado Arms, home of the
Silverbacks.
I started this organization about two years ago and
it has only been getting better, says Tony. Our team
currently consists of four state amateur champions,
one regional amateur 2nd place, one amateur 3rd place
nationals, and myself, professional multiple time state
and regional champion.
Tony, a former boxer-turned-arm wrestler and
built like a brick (you know what), is also the current
Colorado WAL (World Armwrestling League) and IAF
(International Armwrestling Federation) Director, so
hes definitely got the credentials.
Its been a good learning experience and we plan to
move up to the next level as a team very soon, he says of
the Silverbacks. So being that I have family in Glasgow,
I thought about throwing a tournament there as well. It
should bring a bit of action and excitement to Alleys.
Youve got to be 21 and up to compete. So start
practicing your arm pulling and, more details about the
sport forthcoming.

Keep pets away from those stinky fish

If youre headed west on vacation or whatever and
have your pooch with you, Montana Fish, Wildlife and
Parks is urging the public to keep pets out of contact with
fish carcasses along the banks of the Yellowstone River.
While the parasite associated with this fish kill has
not been shown to cause health problems in humans
or pets, bacteria or other harmful materials associated
with decomposing fish could sicken pets.
FWP State Wildlife Veterinarian Jennifer Ramsey
says, Its always a good idea to keep your pets away
from sick, dead, or dying wildlife.

FWP is hosting a public meeting to answer questions
about the fish kill and related Yellowstone River closure
tonight at the Park County Fairgrounds in Livingston.

WNV skeeters show up in Valley County

West Nile Virus (WNV) was detected in groups
of mosquitoes collected from Terry (Prairie County)
and Bowdoin Wildlife Refuge east of Malta (Phillips
County) in mid-July. Since then, several more
groups of mosquitoes have been found positive for WNV from
these two counties.
Recently there was a report of two presumptive human
cases from Dawson County, which are awaiting laboratory
confirmation. Positive mosquitoes were also collected last week
from Blaine and Valley Counties, so its here.
WNV is mosquito transmitted; the primary vector in
Montana is Culex tarsalis. While WNV is widely dispersed
throughout the state, it is particularly abundant along the HiLine. The highest densities of this species are found in areas
associated with irrigated agriculture, prairie wetlands and
riparian areas adjacent to river drainages. These high mosquito
density areas are where we typically find WNV, although it has
occurred in areas where mosquito densities are lower.

Three to 14 days after being bitten by a mosquito that carries
West Nile virus, about 1 in 5 of those infected will develop a
low grade fever, headache and muscle aches lasting for three
to six days. Generally, no treatment is needed. However, in less

than 1% of infected people, serious, life-threatening

symptoms develop including headache, rash, high
fever, stiff neck, mental confusion, muscle weakness,
tremors, convulsions, coma and paralysis. Individuals
who develop any of these symptoms should see their health-care
provider immediately.
Since August is usually the prime time for WNV
transmission, there are several things people can do to protect
themselves. First, peak biting activity for this species (and
many others) is between dusk and midnight. When outside
during these hours and mosquito are noticeable, it is highly
recommended to use an insect repellent that contains either
DEET (Tradename OFF), picaridin (Cutters Advanced), oil of
lemon eucalyptus (Repel Lemon Eucalyptus), or IR3535 (Avon
Skin-so-soft Bug Guard).
Horses and other equines are also greatly affected by
WNV. Vaccinating horses for WNV is recommended and will
protect horses through the summer and into the fall when virus
transmission normally occurs.
