Discipline means the ability of an individual to respect and comply with the law either
discipline is imposed from outside or by his own volition. In the context of the classroom,
discipline is a set of rules that apply to pupils to control and get the desired behavior (Haliza
Hamzah & Samuel, J.N., 2009). Classroom control is one of the important aspects that need
to be addressed by a teacher once stepped into the classroom. Teachers certainly can not
escape from touching matters of discipline pupils very closely due to its association with the
control class. In this case, the most effective method in controlling the class and is normally
used by the teacher is using the strength and firmness that is in their own.
Teachers are one of the profession who played a prominent role in determining the
progress of a country. Teachers not only teach the textbook, but also an educator who is
responsible for producing outstanding individuals. A teacher must equip themselves with
knowledge in the field of child psychology. On this day, teachers can no longer use teaching
techniques and how to control the discipline of pupils such as those used by teachers in the
19th century. Teachers need to update their skills to educate yourself so that new
generations can be utilized. It is important for teachers to control discipline his pupils during
his teaching in the classroom so that teaching and learning (T & L) is more effective. To
facilitate the task of the teacher, the teacher must equip themselves with knowledge in the
areas of classroom management and behavior.
In my opinion, there are some characteristics of an effective teacher towards building
positive relationships in the classroom for the management of a conducive learning
environment. According to Haliza Hamzah et al., (2009), Canter Assertive Discipline Model
emphasize on reinforcement of desired behaviors and enrollment for the consequences of
the behavior shown. Among the techniques or methods of classroom management and
effective behavior is to manage the classroom and pupils behavior assertively. An effective
classroom teacher is a teacher who assertive know anything desired of his disciples. He also
made it clear that the desired pupils behavior and help pupils understand the forms of
behavior that bring success and failure (Canter, L. & Canter, M., 1981). According to Clifford,
H. E. (2008), assertive teachers express their wishes and expectations clear to the pupils
and ready to take appropriate action against pupils misbehavior.

The first characteristic of effective teachers is the teacher must understand his
students with information and data disciples. In every child, they are individuals of different
backgrounds, interests, abilities, experience, culture, and the different existing knowledge. It
is important for teachers to recognize and understand themselves his disciples that in order
to give due consideration. With the teacher will be able to plan lessons in finding appropriate
strategies and best for use in classroom instruction. Master students can obtain information
by way of chat directly with pupils and students get records from parents and teachers first.
Teachers need to be aware of the interest, attitude and ability of pupils in learning so
teachers can meet the needs of pupils.
Secondly, teachers have to organize and plan a classroom environment that is
conducive and daily routine. Teachers can work with students to participate in the
preparation organize classroom facilities and a good environment. All furniture must be
sufficient and in good standing and can be used. Notice boards should be placed in the right
places and student work on display and information important to the students. In addition,
teachers also should describe and explain the use of measurement and evaluation of
learning such as training, testing, project reports, folios and others to establish a regular
classroom setting and good.
Effective classroom teachers can also manage classroom discipline and pupils
behavior by keeping records of pupils misbehavior. The record books will record the number
of times a particular pupils misbehave. It is important for teachers to understand that the
objective of the corrective action is not to whack pupils physically and psychologically but to
give justice to all pupils. Teachers can impose corrective action more systematically by
Canter Hierarchy Action correction. It can record the errors made by the pupils, the pupils
will be aware of the negative treatment is done. At the same time, they can think and make
judgments either alter the taste of their own. In addition, teachers also need to determine the
rules of the classroom and help pupils to understand the importance of these regulations. It
is important to explain the importance of the rules to pupils. Not only this, the teacher also
must explain the consequences if they break the rules are reasonable.
An effective classroom teacher always implement effective communication during the
lesson. Communication is an important aspect of classroom management. Due to classroom
management involves people of both teachers and pupils, the relationship between them is
always present and important. Socialization process will not be in the classroom will not
happen if there is no effective communication. According to Feeney (1983) as stated in
Wendy (2007) says that communication is a process for conveying information, messages or
signals to other parties. The communication process is built from experience and

understanding between the two sides. Response or reaction that exists of this
communication process is the result of experience and understanding that exists between
them. Effective teacher always applying the principles of democracy in the classroom that
can improve communication. The existence of democratic practice in the classroom will
create a conducive atmosphere and harmonious. Pupils will not feel scared or pressured to
voice their thought and feeling. They feels freedom to express their views even if their views
are unpopular among teachers and other partners.
Management aspects of teaching and learning in the classroom. Teaching and
management is important and interrelated. It involves teachers planning to ensure that the
teaching and learning process that occurs can achieve the goals and objectives that have
been set. Effective classroom management teacher need to have the ability to shape and
plan teaching quality, preparing the organization's and able to shape the conducive climate
in the classroom. In order to achieve efficiency in the management of teaching and learning,
teacher need to have wisdom in planning, implementation, monitoring, evaluation and
reflection. For effective teaching, a teacher needs to deliver teaching according to certain
principles.
Another characteristic of effective teacher is to ensure pupils actively involved in the
teaching process. In the process of teaching must involve the pupils to make them active
both mentally and physically all the time in the teaching and learning. In most learning
situations, pupils learn better when they do physical activity while focusing on mental
activities. In the process of delivering lessons there are no particular method suitable for use
at all times. Therefore, teachers need to choose creative teaching methods so that pupils do
not get bored and teaching objectives will be achieved. In addition, any lessons that will be
delivered by teachers become less impact on the pupils, if the lesson is not related to the
experience and existing knowledge of the pupils. Lessons will be more meaningful if taking
experience available to them. Therefore, teachers need to make sure that the subject matter
should be accompanied by examples of what they have experienced. Therefore, the content
will be more easily understood.
In addition, the characteristics of effective teachers also give students the freedom to
choose either they want to work individually or in groups. Freedom of choice will evoke a
sense of responsibility of students to classroom activities options. Another example is that
teachers can tell students not to do things by force, but to help them understand the qualities
that will benefit them and make the right choice. If all the basic needs of students are met
and balanced, then students will be less likely to commit misconduct. With this, the pupils
can think or make a selection with the sincerity of their hearts. Thinking skills and can also

Among the ways that can be done to solve discipline problems that occur with the
use model classroom discipline management is to use hierarchy Corrective Action Canter.
Canter advises teachers to create a hierarchy of priorities and discipline in accordance with
the corrective actions and the consequences that will be done to the students.
The first time if there are students who prefer to skip class or school, the teacher
explains the rules infringed and warned the students who make mistakes. Eg 'school rules
state you must be in class during school.'
If students continue to make the same mistakes in the second and third times,
teachers should explain the rules that have been violated and gave a light punishment to
students. For example, 'youre not in my class yesterday, today you have to return home10
minutes late.
On the fourth time if the student is still repeat his misbehavior, teachers should
explain the rules that have been violated and call parents of students who make mistakes.
Then the teacher should call the mother of the student to inform the matter to his mother. It
will be more effective if the teacher instructed the students to call and tell his own mother will
discipline offense committed by him that.
But, if students are still making the same mistakes in its fifth year, teachers must be
a teacher explains if the students continue to violate the rules, the students will be sent to
meet with the headmaster.
Then, if students are still repeat that mistake, the teacher should tell the students
that the teacher will take the student continues to meet with the headmaster at the time and
when it happens. To accomplish this hierarchical discipline, teachers must keep records of
offenses committed by students using the names of the students.
In conclusion, the ability of teachers to manage the classroom and student behavior
is an important and necessary to ensure the comfort and classroom environment that is
conducive and comfortable. Teachers will need to take into account the physical
characteristics of a good, emotional factors disciples, social atmosphere, as well as the rules
and routines executed. Teachers will need to identify the causes of problems and behavioral
problems that arise can be dealt with immediately. Rules are clear, concise, and important
should be implemented by teachers to the classroom in a controlled manner.
