I called the BOCES professional

development person, and
continued to work on the
professional development outline
with dates for the district. It was
essential to use data and meet
with the principal in order to
make sure all needs are being
met in this area. At night one of
the teachers for the Wildcat
Weeks program said that we
would need to go to the Panama
pool due to weather this week.
After looking at the weather
report this was evident. I made
contact with Panama
administrators and set this up as
soon as possible. I also let the
transportation director know that
we would need to move
swimming.
Today I worked with the
struggling teacher again on
classroom management and

The meeting with the

superintendent and principal
lasted a long time, but we got a
lot done and have a clear
mindset for where professional
development should be focused
in the upcoming year. There was
a concern that we may need to
swim at the Panama CSD pool
due to weather this week or in
weeks coming up.
I think we are moving in a really
good direction with professional
development. I hope that
teachers find it to be valuable as
well.

best practice. We discussed her

classroom, worked on solutions
that would work for her, decided
what guidelines were most
important for her class to be
successful and worked through
pitfalls she had encountered last
year. We then designed and
created the materials for a new
classroom management system
for the upcoming year. I also
during this teachers lunch break
coordinated with the Water
Wednesdays head lifeguard to
make sure she was ready for the
Wildcat Weeks program to begin
on July 21st.
Today I worked on the Title grant
for the district and the budget
forms. In addition I logged
professional development hours
for all teachers requiring 175
hours every five years and did
some research into this
requirement. Filled out all
paperwork for the Wildcat Weeks
end of program field trip and
spoke with the Darien Lake
representative helping with the
trip.
Reviewed requisitions with the
business official for the
upcoming school year. Went
through all textbook money and
how it would be spent. Planned

to improve in areas she has been

lacking in in the past.

Logging hours is extremely easy.

The title grant does prove to be a

EngageNY has made it so that
textbook money can be spent in
so many new and interesting
ways as opposed to years ago
when it was purely textbooks.
If I do not check my emails on
weekends I get behind due to the
numerous teacher and vendor
inquiries. It is calming to me to
keep up on my email. When it
starts to pile up I feel
overwhelmed.
The private school forms are still
giving me a hard time. These are
a nightmare. I called a colleague
who works in a neighboring
district for some assistance.
This was extremely helpful and it
is nice to now have a resource I
can call to ask questions. I can
now finish up the title grant.

The vision for Wildcat Weeks is to educate the whole
child, and help them become lifelong learners. It is
essential each and every child enjoy learning and is
provided with learning experiences that both
challenge and engage. The vision for Wildcat Weeks
will be accomplished through hands on experiences

Standard 1 Reflections
This month did not require as much direction with the
vision for Wildcat Weeks. I feel as though all involved
with the program have a common vision at this point
in time. Im going to take this as a win that onemonth in everyone appears to be on the same page.

and an education that is driven by curiosity. This

vision parallels the Sherman Central School District
vision.

The only issue I am seeing with the vision and

overarching structure of the program is that some of
the teachers are getting very negative. I think this is
due to several factors. First, the teachers involved
In order for this program to be successful it must be

in a way that promotes a network of individuals

working toward the success of the program. This will

working on the schedule for next year.
My role is to promote the program to the school
board, faculty, and community and plan the program
it its entirety. I will also oversee day-to-day
operations. Throughout each of these tasks I will
maintain the overarching vision and goals for the
program.
The community will be involved and utilized for
financial support, recreational activities, and learning
experiences. Members of the community will also be
invited to chaperone field trips or volunteer.
Standard 2 Major Activities
Wildcat Weeks will give ample opportunities for
students to interact with teachers and administrators
in a positive way. Also, community members will be

I also think that the teachers acting as head

counselor need to change more throughout the
program. In order to do this though we will need to
drum up more interest in the head counselor role.
This month I enjoyed stepping back and helping
steward the overall vision of the program but less of
the day to day operations. I do feel that the more I
step out of the day to day the more the teachers do
and the better job they do. While my very close
involvement was necessary in the beginning, I like
that the teachers are now taking more ownership.
Standard 2 Reflections
I stopped into several classrooms or outside locations
this month to evaluate the teaching-taking place.
The program is really taking off and students are

able to see the school in new light.

Each day during the program students will have
various learning opportunities. The courses provided
will be taught by certified Sherman teachers and
integrate Common Core ELA and Mathematics. An
example of a course taught is Bringing Books to Life.
Our Sherman Music teacher will teach this course.
Students will create music using various instruments
to accompany classic children's stories.
Certified Sherman Teachers will be teaching all
courses. Each course will incorporate the multiple
intelligences to reach all types of learners. Also, class
groups will be small enough to allow easy
differentiation to meet all needs.

getting new and fun learning experiences. The

courses were successful at varying degrees.
Obviously students had their favorites, but I was
pleasantly surprised at how much they were willing to
try.
A change I would like to make for next year is to allow
students to sign up for a set of classes they find
interesting to them. Im not sure this will be possible,
but I would love to see classes more tailored to
student interests. Also, for some courses (cooking for
example) class sizes need to be smaller or the head
counselor needs to stay and help. The cooking class
that was done with the youngest group of students
was a little nerve racking given the cutting, hot
ovens, and young age. There definitely needs to be
more assistance with this next year.

Teachers will be evaluated through observations using

the Danielson rubric. Post observation meetings will
be held to discuss growth opportunities among the
staff. Also, teachers will meet each morning with the
head counselor as well as weekly with me.

Some of the courses were more popular than others

this year, however we had a good mix of the arts,
activities outside, math, ela, and science.

Standard 3 Major Activities

I will be responsible for the schedule of the program
including courses, field trips, breakfasts and lunch,
and the hiring of staff.

Standard 3 Reflections
We are on budget for the program still. We have
added in one field trip and this will put us at the
higher end of our budget.

In addition, I will manage day-to-day operations

including discipline, any issues that arise, staff
planning, and work with the Transportation Director
on transportation needs.

We had a discipline issue arise with one student

saying something inappropriate to another student on
the bus. The principal and I handled this together.

I will plan and budget for the program, including

securing grant and general funds, from the school

budget and outside agencies.

Also, this month a lot of the planning took place for
the end of program field trip. This went very well.
The transportation director was so helpful throughout
the program. Having a good relationship with this
individual is so instrumental as we sometimes needed
to change our plans on the fly. One week it was
supposed to be too cold to swim so last minute we
had to change our swimming destination. Between
transportation and the main office we had the change
made, bus drivers notified and all parents notified in
an hour.
I would like to look into a way to have next years
schedule allow students to pick the courses they are
most interested in and sign up for those.

Funding will be coming in part from the town. Also,

community assets such as the park, post office, fire
station, swimming pool and library will be utilized
during the program. Individuals in the town with
information about free field trips and other exciting
opportunities will be utilized for the betterment of the
program.
Standard 5 Major Activities
Every day of my career and during this program I will
act with integrity. Students, staff, and myself will all
be held to the expectations set forth in the school
code of conduct and teacher handbook.
I will use the code of conduct and teacher handbook
for any discipline issue that arises to insure fair
treatment to all.
Every decision I make will be in the best interest of
kids. My decisions will be ethically and morally sound
as well as in line with the vision for the program and
Sherman Central School's overarching vision.

Standard 6 Major Activities

The Sherman community is a high needs community.
The majority of families work in agriculture or bluecollar jobs. Also, many of the families are single
parent households. This program will greatly assist
those families financially as well as help ward off
summer regression.

Standard 5 Reflections
This standard is extremely easy to adhere to as I
stuck strictly to my own morals and ethics as well as
the teacher handbook when I was a teacher in
Sherman. One should not be in this profession if they
cant do that.
There was only the one discipline issue referred to me
and that student was treated fairly and given a fair
consequence as per the student handbook. The
student in question used inappropriate language
toward another child on the bus. The victims parent
reported it in the morning. I assured him that I would
take care of it. My principal who I am interning with
helped me. We spoke to both children and after
researching the issue a little more found that both
students were using inappropriate language. Both
students then received a consequence of sitting out
of the fun activity that was planned that afternoon for
one hour.
Standard 6 Reflections
I spoke with parents several times throughout this
month and they are thrilled with the program. The
comment that keeps recurring is my kids are so tired
and sleeping good at night because they are having
so much fun and are so busy during the day.

The basis for the Wildcat Weeks program is the need

of the community based on its high poverty level.
Research has shown students living in low-income
households will regress in math by two months and
reading by one over the summer months. This
program gets students out of an impoverished
situation and into an enriching environment.
Through this internship and the Wildcat Weeks
program parents will have a safe place for their
student to attend each day. Students will be provided
with enriching experiences, as well as two meals a
day. Families will save money on day care during the
summer months.
Standard 7 Major Activities
This program will allow 60 students in grades K-6 to
have a safe, secure, and enriching environment for
five weeks out of the summer. This is about 30% of
the students in the elementary school. In the future,
more slots may be available in order to benefit more
students.

On a trip to the grocery store a community member

said that they have heard nothing but wonderful
things about the program and that they wished this
would have been around when their kids were
younger.

Standard 7 Reflections
This internship has been going very well. Running the
summer program involves running everyday
operations as well as stewarding the whole vision. I
have gotten experience in every aspect of the school
from budgeting to health and wellness. It has allowed
me to learn and grow as a leader by basically running
a mini school. Instead of working through everything

to have this opportunity.
The Educational Leadership Consortium Council
Standards will be considered and utilized throughout
the development and implementation of the program.
Best practice for summer programs will be followed.
Also, Common Core ELA and Math standards will be
integrated throughout all courses.
This internship will be done at Sherman Central
School with Sherman Central School K-6 students and

staff.
Meetings will be held to plan with teachers and head
counselors.
All credit will be given to sources where ideas were
generated from, including sources from other schools.
