The Back Story

Penn State ice hockey was inaugurated in 1938. Penn State fielded a varsity hockey team for five
seasons in the 1940s (194044, 194647) before the sport was dropped due to limited facilities.
When the program was resumed in 1971, it began playing a mix of non-NCAA club teams, NAIA
teams and DIII teams. In 1975-76 season Penn State became the first college ice hockey team to
play in Europe. The team moved to the on-campus Greenberg Ice Pavilion, now known as the Penn
State Ice Pavilion, in 1980. The 1,350-seat facility was the home of PSU hockey until 2013.From
1971 to 2012, Penn State teams won 7 ACHA National Championships, were runners-up 9 times,
appeared in 29 ACHA postseason tournaments (including 10 consecutive championship games), won
9 conference playoff titles and recorded 8 conference regular season championships.
Over the summer of 2010 it was reported that Penn State athletic director Tim Curley and Terrence
Pegula, a PSU alumnus, billionaire hockey fan, and possible large donor visited Minnesotas hockey
facilities and the new on-campus Notre Dame Ice Arena currently under construction at Notre Dame
and other Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) schools. Pegula donated $88 Million (later
upgraded to $102 Million) to the Penn State hockey programs for the purpose of building an arena.

On September 17, 2010, after years of speculation,it was officially announced the program would
move to the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I level along with the PSU
womens ice hockey team starting in the 2012-13 season and the program would initially compete
as an independent team until the new arena was completed in 2013.The university also announced
the construction of a new 6,000-seat ice arena to replace the undersized and aging 1,350-seat Penn
State Ice Pavilion.
Following the announcement by Penn State, the Big Ten Conference announced that the conference
planned to begin sponsoring mens ice hockey in the 2013-14 season combining Penn State with
Michigan State University, University of Michigan, and Ohio State University from the CCHA as well
as the University of Minnesota and the University of Wisconsin from the WCHA to form the sixmember Big Ten Hockey Conference.

Terry Pegula, who along with his wife, Kim, donated $88 million to the University to fund the
arena, helped to make this arena come to life.
The journey began as a question from me [back in 2005], and an answer from [associate
athletic director] Joe Battista, when I asked him why there werent Division I hockey programs,
and he informed me of state budgets and all this stuff, and thats when it started, Pegula said.
Pegula finalized the gift in 2010, and construction finally began on the project early in 2012, with
the completition and opening in the Fall of 2013.

An Inside Look at
Pegula Ice Arena...
The Perfect Fit for a Division I Team!

Our vision is that Crawford will

design and construct the best
collegiate ice arena in the country.
~ Marv Bevan

Penn State enters a new Ice Age

When creating a Division I Hockey program, Penn State seized the opportunity to build a new
arena designed by Crawford Architects. Located at the edge of campus, the building interprets
historic campus architecture and forms of the surrounding landscape to create a new image for a
new hockey program.

The 227,000 SF facility includes a 6,000 seat main arena and a second rink with 300 seats for
practice and tournament use. New lockers rooms, weight room, offices and training spaces will
be the home of the mens and womens ice hockey teams. The second ice sheet will be operated
nearly 24 hours a day to provide use by community leagues, figure skaters and youth hockey
leagues. A club lounge and meeting rooms are situated to take advantage of views of nearby Mt.
Nittany.

The team kick-off meeting was held in November

of 2010. In the first meeting, which included Terry
Pegula, Intercollegiate Athletics, Office of Physical
Plant, Crawford, Bohlin Cywinski Jackson, and
Mortenson; the team defined the project vision,
goals, budgets, and collaboratively worked to ensure
that the design and construction would satisfy each
of the stated goals.

Building

Modeling
Take a look inside a 3D Stereoscopic Model
of Pegula Ice Arena at the Applied Research
Laboratory on the University Park campus.

We design in three dimensions utilizing Building Information Modeling

(BIM) programs such as REVIT, Sketch Up and 3-D Max from the
outset of design. We find this to be a superior way to develop and
communicate our design. It also provides unprecedented internal
document coordination for all disciplines involved in the design providing
a platform for the design team to resolve any coordination issues before
they become problems in the field during construction.
At the latest stages of our documentation, BIM enables the design team
to effectively interact with the construction manager and to actually
simulate construction in a virtual format. By setting the stage for
more complete and accurate drawings, the construction phase is less
hampered by fewer Requests for Information (RFI)s and Change Orders
minimizing potential disputes that can result from incomplete or poorly
coordinated drawings.
Three dimensional imagery and models derived from BIM software
minimizes our reliance on two dimensional media. Three dimensional
images are easier to read and comprehend.
We thoroughly explore a full range of alternatives in order to enable
the projects full potential. We possess the necessary insight to ask the
right questions at the right time and the collaborative spirit to listen and
respond to our clients answers.
The design team believes in measurable results, and will work with the
client group to capture the critical success factors, to establish the bench
marks, to set the targets to achieve great design that is expressive of
RITs athletic and academic mission. The principles of environmental and
environmentally sustainability will be met and exceeded where possible.
In addition to the critical elements of environmental sustainability, the
design team has found that a holistic approach to best practices,
including social and community values, economic responsibility and
aesthetic excellence, results in projects with a lasting legacy.
