The majority of species of sea turtles are endangered species. This is due to
the constant destruction of their natural habitat, such as pollution of the
waters in which they live. They often fight against other dangers besides
being hunted, their eggs are used as a food source, and become trapped in
fishing nets. There are a lot of conservation efforts to rescue them, and we
expect the number of sea turtles may increase.
Here are some interesting extra information about sea turtles.
The number of eggs depends of the species. In addition, sea turtles can lay
more than once. On overage, sea turtles lay 110 eggs in a nest, and
between 2-8 nests per season.
The temperature of the nest determines the sex of a baby. Warmer
temperatures produce mostly female, and mostly lower temperatures
males. A medium temperature produces an equal proportion of males and
females.
Sea turtles locates the ocean because they are guided by the brightest light,
which is usually the reflection of moonlight on the sea. Turtles prevent
shadows, including dune vegetation on top of the beach.
I want to emphasize that Sea turtles can stay under water for several hours,
depending on the level of activity. A turtle resting or sleeping can stay under
water for 4-7 hours. Also, Recent research has shown that some species of
turtles, even can hibernate for several months.
