Computer Beep Codes

If an error occurs during startup that cannot be reported on the monitor, your computer may emit a beep
code that identifies the problem. The beep code is a pattern of sounds: for example, one beep, followed
by a second beep, and then a burst of three beeps (code 1-1-3) means that the computer was unable to
read the data in NVRAM. Some issues are caused by component failure or loose cables, others require
hardware replacement.
If a beep code is emitted, write it down on a copy of the Diagnostics Checklist and look it up in the
following table. If you are unable to resolve the problem by looking up the meaning of the beep code, use
the Dell Diagnostics to identify a more serious cause. If you are still unable to resolve the problem,
contact Dell for technical assistance.

Identifying Dell Computer Models Using the Model Code

On Sept 26, 2005 the System Setup program on certain Dell Dimension, Inspiron, and XPS computers was
changed to display a model code instead of the computer model name. The Resource and Driver CD also
lists the computer by this code. This may cause confusion when identifying which device drivers to install.
If you are unable to identify your computer using the model code, refer to Table 1 below to determine the
model name of your computer.

PC DOCTOR ERROR CODES

Frequently Asked Questions

The Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) provide answers to the most common questions our customers
have regarding PC-Doctor products from sales and support to installation and setup. Click on a category
below to expand the list of questions and the corresponding answers.
FAQ
What does PC-Doctor error code "nnn" mean?
Answer: The error codes that appear after a PC-Doctor test are designed to quickly allow PC
manufacturer's technical support team to determine which tests failed. You should contact technical
support to find the meaning of an error code.
A complete error code is six characters long, for example, DOLM32. The first character represents the
user's operating system. The second character is the mode of failure (such as continuous, intermittent,
LED fault, etc.). The third shows the action taken by the service provider. The fourth through sixth
characters represent the failing device type (one of ten categories) and finally, the actual symptom or
failure. In the example above, DOLM32 means:
A Vista system (D) with a Pre-failure Diagnostic result (O) had its hard drive returned
defective (L). The hard drive (M) had given a prefailure notice that a threshold was
exceeded (32).
To make it easy for service providers to implement the error codes, PC-Doctor released the Error Code
Wizard. With a few clicks of the mouse, a service technician can paste the complete error code into his
or her tracking software. No fuss, no muss, and no tattered copies of the codes list. The Error Code
Wizard is free for commercial or personal use and can be downloaded here. It runs on Windows-based
systems (.Net Framework 2.0 is required).
