PART 1 - GENERAL

SUMMARY
A.

This Section includes the following items fabricated from wire mesh:

DEFINITIONS
A.

Terms below shall be as defined in ASTM E 2016:

Intermediate Crimp: Wires pass over one and under the next adjacent wire in both
directions, with wires crimped before weaving and with extra crimps between the
intersections.
Lock Crimp: Deep crimps at points of intersection that lock wires securely in place.

Recycled Content Materials: Building materials or products with recycled content calculated as
a percentage by weight determined through the following formula:
Postconsumer Recycled Content + Preconsumer Recycled Content
1.

Postconsumer Recycled Content: Waste material generated by households or by


commercial, industrial and institutional facilities in their role as end-users of the product,
which can no longer be used for its intended purpose.

2.

Preconsumer Recycled Content: Material diverted from the waste stream during the
manufacturing process. Reutilization of materials (i.e., rework, regrind or scrap generated
in a process and capable of being reclaimed within the same process that generated it) is
excluded.

PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS
A.

Structural Performance: Provide exterior wire mesh partitions capable of withstanding the
effects of gravity loads.

B.

Seismic Performance: Provide wire mesh partitions capable of withstanding the effects of
earthquake motions determined according to ASCE 7, "Minimum Design Loads for Buildings
and Other Structures": Section 9, "Earthquake Loads."

Product Data: Include construction details, material descriptions, dimensions of individual


components and profiles, and finishes for wire mesh items.

LEED Submittals:

Credit MR 4: Provide product data indicating percentages by weight of postconsumer and


preconsumer recycled content for products having recycled content.

Include statement that indicates costs for each product having recycled content.

Shop Drawings: Include plans, elevations, sections, details, and attachments to other work.

For installed products indicated to comply with design loads, include structural analysis
data signed and sealed by the qualified professional engineer responsible for their
preparation.

Samples for Verification: 300-by-300-mm panel constructed of specified frame members and
wire mesh. Show method of finishing members at intersections.

Maintenance Data: For wire mesh partition door hardware to include in maintenance manuals.

QUALITY ASSURANCE
A.

Installer Qualifications: An employer of workers trained and approved by manufacturer.

Installer's responsibilities include fabricating and installing wire mesh items and
providing professional engineering services needed to assume engineering responsibility.
Engineering Responsibility: Preparation of data for wire mesh items, including Shop
Drawings, based on testing and engineering analysis of manufacturer's standard units in
assemblies similar to those indicated for this Project.

B.

Source Limitations: Obtain wire mesh items through one source from a single manufacturer.

C.

Welding: Qualify procedures and personnel according to the following:

DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND HANDLING

Deliver wire mesh items with cardboard protectors on perimeters of panels and doors and with
posts wrapped and crated to provide protection during transit and Project-site storage. Do not
use nonvented plastic.
PROJECT CONDITIONS

A.

Field Measurements: Verify actual locations of construction contiguous with wire mesh items
by field measurements before fabrication and indicate measurements on Shop Drawings.
COORDINATION

A.

Coordinate installation of anchorages for wire mesh items supported or anchored to permanent
construction. Furnish setting drawings, templates, and directions for installing anchorages,
including sleeves, concrete inserts, anchor bolts, and items with integral anchors, that are to be
embedded in concrete or masonry. Deliver such items to Project site in time for installation.

Corrosion Protection:
Carbon-steel components zinc plated to comply with
ASTM B 633, Class Fe/Zn 5 (0.005 mm) for Class SC 1 service condition (mild).
Corrosion Protection: Stainless-steel components complying with ASTM F 738M and
ASTM F 836M, Alloy Group 1 or 4 for bolts and nuts; ASTM A 666 or ASTM A 276,
Type 304 or 316, for anchors.
For Postinstalled Anchors in Concrete: Capability to sustain, without failure, a load

indicated and fabricated from corrosion-resistant materials; with clips or other accessory
devices for attaching hangers of type indicated, and with capability to sustain, without failure, a
load equal to 10 times that imposed by wire mesh construction, as determined by testing per
ASTM E 1190, conducted by a qualified testing and inspecting agency.

Seismic Bracing: Angles with legs not less than 32 mm wide, formed from 1-mm- thick,
metallic-coated steel sheet; with bolted connections and 6-mm- diameter bolts.

STANDARD-DUTY WIRE MESH PARTITIONS

Mesh: 3.5-mm- diameter, intermediate-crimp steel wire woven into 38-mm diamond mesh.

B.

Vertical Panel Framing: 32-by-16-by-2.5-mm cold-rolled, C-shaped steel channels with 6-mmdiameter bolt holes spaced not more than 450 mm o.c. along center of framing.

C.

Horizontal Panel Framing: 25-by-13-by-3-mm cold-rolled steel channels.

Posts for 90-Degree Corners: 32-by-32-by-3-mm steel angles with 6-mm- diameter bolt holes
aligning with bolt holes in vertical framing; with floor anchor clips.

Posts for Other-Than-90-Degree Corners: Manufacturer's standard steel pipe or tubing with 6mm- diameter bolt holes aligning with bolt holes in vertical framing.

FABRICATION
A.

General: Fabricate wire mesh items from components of sizes not less than those indicated.
Use larger-size components as recommended by wire mesh item manufacturer. Provide bolts,
hardware, and accessories as required for complete installation.

Welding: Weld corner joints of framing and finish sand.

Standard Duty Wire Mesh Partitions: Fabricate wire mesh partitions with cutouts for pipes,
ducts, beams, and other items indicated. Finish edges of cutouts to provide a neat, protective
edge.

Mesh: Securely clinch mesh to framing.


Framing: Fabricate framing with mortise and tenon corner construction.

bottom horizontal framing.
Fabricate wire mesh partitions with bottom horizontal framing flush with finished floor.
Doors: Align bottom of door with bottom of adjacent panels.

Provide horizontal stiffeners as indicated or, if not indicated, as required by panel


height and as recommended by wire mesh partition manufacturer. Weld horizontal
stiffeners to vertical framing.
Fabricate three- and four-way intersections using manufacturer's standard
connecting clips and fasteners.
Fabricate partition and door framing with slotted holes for connecting adjacent
panels.

For doors that do not extend full height of partition, provide transom over door,
fabricated from same mesh and framing as partition panels.

Hardware Preparation: Mortise, reinforce, drill, and tap doors and framing as required to
install hardware.

FINISHES
A.

General: Comply with NAAMM's "Metal Finishes Manual for Architectural and Metal
Products" for recommendations for applying and designating finishes.

Finish wire mesh items after assembly.


Appearance of Finished Work: Variations in appearance of abutting or adjacent pieces
are acceptable if they are within one-half of the range of approved Samples. Noticeable
variations in the same piece are not acceptable. Variations in appearance of other
components are acceptable if they are within the range of approved Samples and are
assembled or installed to minimize contrast.

ISSUE FOR CONSTRUCTION

Galvanizing:
Where indicated, hot-dip galvanize wire mesh items to comply with
ASTM A 123/A 123M. Hot-dip galvanize hardware for hot-dip galvanized wire mesh items to
comply with ASTM A 153/A 153M.

PART 3 - EXECUTION
3.1

EXAMINATION
A.

Examine areas, with Installer present, for compliance with requirements for installation
tolerances and other conditions affecting performance of work.

B.

Examine floors for suitable conditions where wire mesh items will be installed.

C.

Examine walls and ceilings to which wire mesh items will be attached for properly located
blocking, grounds, and other solid backing for attachment of support fasteners.

D.

Proceed with installation only after unsatisfactory conditions have been corrected.

3.2

ERECTION
A.

Wire Mesh Partitions:

Anchor wire mesh partitions to floor with 9.5-mm- diameter, postinstalled expansion
anchors at 305 mm o.c. through anchor clips located at each post and corner. Shim
anchor clips as required to achieve level and plumb installation.
Anchor wire mesh partitions to floor with 9.5-mm- diameter, postinstalled expansion
anchors at 305 mm o.c. through floor shoes located at each post and corner. Adjust wire
mesh partition posts in floor shoes to achieve level and plumb installation.

Anchors may be set with power-actuated fasteners instead of postinstalled


expansion anchors if so indicated on Shop Drawings.

Anchor wire mesh partitions to walls at 305 mm o.c. through back corner panel framing
and as follows:

For concrete and solid masonry anchorage, use drilled-in expansion shields and
hanger or lag bolts.
For hollow masonry anchorage, use toggle bolts.
For wood stud partitions, use hanger or lag bolts set into wood backing between

For steel-framed gypsum board assemblies, use hanger or lag bolts set into wood
backing between studs. Coordinate with stud installation to locate backing
members.
For steel-framed gypsum board assemblies, fasten brackets directly to steel
framing or concealed reinforcements using self-tapping screws of size and type
required to support structural loads.

On each side of sliding door openings.


For partitions that are 2.1 to 2.7 m high, spaced at 4.6 to 6.1 m o.c.
For partitions that are 3.0 to 3.7 m high, located between every other panel.
For partitions that are more than 3.7 m high, located between each panel.

Provide seismic supports and bracing as indicated or, if not indicated, as recommended
by manufacturer and as required for stability, extending and fastening members to
supporting structure.
Where standard-width wire mesh partition panels do not fill entire length of run, provide
adjustable filler panels to fill openings.
Install doors complete with door hardware.
Install security windows complete with window hardware.
Weld or bolt sheet metal bases to wire mesh partitions and doors.
Bolt accessories to wire mesh partition framing.

ADJUSTING AND CLEANING


A.

Adjust doors to operate easily without binding.

B.

Check and readjust operating hardware items just before final inspection. Leave work in
complete and proper operating condition. Remove and replace defective work including doors
and framing that are warped, bowed, or otherwise unacceptable.

C.

Galvanized Surfaces: Clean field welds, bolted connections, and abraded areas; repair
galvanizing to comply with ASTM A 780.
