Volunteerism is alive and well in Moorabool

and the committee of Ballans much-loved
Autumn Festival are getting their hands
dirty again with the launch of a vibrant new
event.
The Flavours of Moorabool will showcase
the regions finest talent at St Annes Winery
in Myrniong on Sunday August 28.
The new tourism event, supported by a
$3000 Moorabool Council grant, comes after
the success of the Ballan Autumn Festival,
which was launched in 1975.
Ballan Autumn Festival Association
secretary, Matthew Grindrod said the
association, in partnership with St Annes

Winery, aimed to establish the Flavours of
Moorabool as one of the shires premier food
and wine tasting events.
Quality events, such as the Flavours of
Moorabool, are important because they
not only promote tourism and commercial
opportunities for local businesses, but they
also attract the attention of event organisers
looking to stage other large scale events in
our shire, he said.
Events organised by other volunteer
associations in our shire, such as the Bacchus
Marsh Tourism Association, rival those of
the bigger cities with events teams dedicated
to putting on such events, and Im extremely
proud of what we achieve as volunteers each

year.
Mr Grindrod said funds raised from the
festival would be used to fund their flagship
event the Ballan Autumn Festival for 2017
and beyond.
Local traders, and indeed festival market
stalls, quote the Ballan Autumn Festival
weekend as their busiest trading weekend
of the year an important tradition to keep
alive.
The Flavours of Moorabool kicks off at 11am
and will showcase the flavours unique to,
and loved by the region. Guests will have
the opportunity to sample the shires finest

Crossing with care

Most towns have at least one, and in
a first for Ballan, residents can now
safely cross the main street thanks to
the installation of two new pedestrian
crossings.
Member for Buninyong Geoff Howard
visited Ballan on Friday (August
5) to open the new raised zebra
crossings on Inglis Street. He was
joined by VicRoads Road Safety and
Traffic Engineering team leader, Ben
Anderson, and residents of the Ballan
Aged Care Hostel.
Pedestrians, especially the elderly
and residents with disabilities, now
feel safer when crossing the road to

access the hospital and nursing home at
this new crossing [located near Cowie
Street], Mr Howard said.
People can also cross with greater
safety near Fisken Street, with the
crossing theyre delivering improved
connections to the shopping strip and
recreational facilities.

the new pedestrian crossings.

Fatality crash seeks witnesses
A woman has died following a single car crash in Ballan on

Friday.
The vehicle was discovered by a passer-by just prior to 10pm
who called Triple Zero.
Investigators are unsure as to the exact time of the crash and
are appealing to anyone who may have seen the vehicle in
the area to come forward.
It is believed a green Holden Commodore veered off Frichots
Lane, near Stone Hut Lane, Bunding and struck a tree.
The driver, a 48-year-old Ballan woman who was the only
occupant of the car, died at the scene.
Police are urging anyone who may have witnessed the crash,
or saw the vehicle in the area prior to the crash to contact
Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Warrants issued in Marsh
The 31-year-old man was arrested by Special Operations

Group members at a Ballarat Road, Braybrook address
about 1pm on Sunday 7 August. He has since been charged
following warrants issued across Victoria including Tatura
and Bacchus Marsh.
A facebook post revealed, Something going down in
Underbank (Bacchus Marsh), cops in bullet proof vests, dog
squad, eight cars and heaps of cops.
The Braybrook man has been charged with one count of
collecting or making documents likely to facilitate a terrorist
act, contrary to section 101.5(1) of the Criminal Code (Cth) and
one count of acts done in preparation for, or planning, a terrorist
act, contrary to section 101.6(1) of the Criminal Code (Cth).
The investigation was conducted by Victorias Joint Counter
Terrorism Team (JCTT), comprising officers from the
Australian Federal Police and Victoria Police.
AC Ross Guenther said at a media conference there is no
ongoing risk or harm to the Victorian community that we
are aware of.

Music and all that jazz

Showband will feature in a Tribute to
the Big Band era with numbers such
as In the Mood, Little Brown Jug, A
String of Pearls. The jazz segments
for the evening will be performed by
a guest jazz group from Geelong, the
Peter Hooper Quartet.
The four guest soloists, Maddy
Ludbrook, Georgie Potter, Andrew
McKenner and Josh Borschman, are
all members of the Carolyn Bennett
Sing to Inspire Music School.

The Moorabool Light Orchestra is
bringing its cabaret style back to the
stage.
Broadway and All That Jazz
will be presented at the Bacchus
Marsh Public Hall this month and
will offer cabaret style seating and
performances.
Musical director, Barry Wilkins said
the audience would be entertained
not only by the full orchestra, but
also four young vocalists, a 20-piece
showband and a jazz quartet.
The music program features a range
of Broadway hits including selections
from My Fair Lady, Phantom of the
Opera, Les Misrables, Sound of Music, Orpheus in the Underworld, Music Man and a classic tribute to the famous American film score composer
John Williams, he said.

Maddy Ludbrook has taken on many roles both on and off the stage. She was the
choral director of BLOC Junior Productions, Camp Rock (2015) and Narnia (2012),
and is a musical theatre teacher at the Kerry Moore School of Ballet. Her on stage
performances have seen her take part in Anything Goes, Zanadu Zombie Prom,
Peter Pan, A Night on Broadway and A Very Music Theatre Christmas.
Georgie Potter has performed in a collection of shows, included Oliver!, The Wizard
of Oz, Into the Wood, Narnia The Addams Family and Aladdin Jnr. She has studied
voice with Phil Johnston, Stella Savy and Geoffrey Williams, and is now in her second
year of learning with Carolyn Bennett. Georgie is currently studying a Bachelor of
Music Theatre at Federation University.
Andrew McKenner wrote and performed his own Cabaret, Happy wife, Happy Life,
to successful seasons in Balland Melbourne. He has played a wide range of characters
on stage, including Pal Gaugin in Vincent: An A Capella Opera, Vernon Hines in The
Pyjama Game, and the Cavemn Ancestor in The Addams Family. In 2015, Andrew
sung for Nancye Hayes in a workshop at the Federation University Arts Academy.
Josh Borschman commenced lessons with Carolyn Bennett in 2012 and has since
taken up every performance opportunity possible. He has performed in Christmas
Shows and at the Royal South Street Society singing competition.

The assertions of former
councillor Pat Griffin have
been shot down by East
Ward
Councillor
Dave
Edwards.
Each expressed opposing views when debating
the proposed new Recreation Reserve User Fees and
Charges Policy at the August 3 council meeting.
The policy governs fees
and charges for recreation
and sports, events and other
community activities held at
the shires reserves.
Mr Griffin, Chair of the Bacchus Marsh Racecourse and
Recreation Reserve Committee, said that he would
not support any user-pays
policy.
He said he was not sure
how fees for ground use and
for facility use would be separated, adding that clubs at
the Bacchus Marsh reserve
have put large amounts of
money into the facilities that
they use.
This policy has serious
misgivings and needs further discussion, Mr Griffin
said.
But he brought up the Bac-
chus Marsh West Golf Club

as an example against the
policy, citing its $1 peppercorn lease agreement with
council.
The Pony Club, the Camp
Drafters, the Harness and
Poultry Clubs, they manage their own facilities, except for public access areas
- roads, toilets, mowing of
nature strip. In theory they
all should be $1, Mr Griffin
said.
Cr Edwards pointed out the
difference.
Why does the Golf Club
pay $1 and the Harness
Club pays over $3000? Because council does a lot of
the work at the reserve, Cr
Edwards said.
What Mr Griffin failed
to address is that council
pay all maintenance costs
associated with the varying sporting clubs where
there is a user agreement
or licence in place. Usually
football, netball, basketball
clubs etc have these and we
maintain the buildings and
playing fields and we are
only asking that they contribute a small amount - 10
per cent or less.
However with a lease

(as with the golf club) the

club bears all costs. And is
responsible for the costs of
all maintenance of the clubhouse, playing field, driveways car park etc. Therefore
any charge is a profit to
council at the detriment to
the community group.
Cr Edwards also amended
the motion to adopt the
policy, changing wording so
that those using the facilities
such as a chiropractor wanting to use medical rooms at
a sporting facility to conduct
business should be charged
commercial rent rates but
that organisations such as
football clubs should not
be charged full commercial
rent rates.
Council should not profit
from community organisations that provide significant benefits for the community, Cr Edwards said.

of the motion; Councillors

after four
days lost

A Darley man who was lost for four days in
the bush has been found alive.
James Grimes was located near the
Lerderderg River just before 4pm on Tuesday
(August 2).
The 62-year-old was reported missing after
he failed to make contact with his family
after leaving his Swans Road home with a
backpack at about 8:30am on Saturday 30
July.
An extensive search of the Bacchus Marsh
bush was conducted by local and Ballarat
police, Search and Rescue divers, and State
Emergency Services.
The SES contingent was made up of
volunteers from Bacchus Marsh, Ballarat,
Hepburn, Melton, Whitehorse, Lilydale,
Manningham,
Sorrento,
Whittlesea,
Malvern, Broadmeadows, Central RSU and
Upper Yarra units.
Mr Grimes was taken by road ambulance to
the Alfred Hospital in a stable condition.
In Australia, around 35,000 people are
reported missing each year, with 1,600 of
those people missing for more than three
months.

Surprised and humbled is how
Bacchus Marsh resident Lauraine Slater described how she
felt upon receiving an award
that recognised her nine years
of voluntary service to the Red
Cross.
The long-term resident received
the award on Monday (July 25)
in a ceremony held at Government House.
I felt a mixture of things, to be
honest, she said.
Im still trying to come to
terms with it because Ive never
done what I do for recognition,
I do it because Red Cross is a
good place to volunteer.
Lauraine commenced her role
as a volunteer close to a decade
ago, after she noticed a sign pursuing helpers at the Red Cross
Blood Bank.
I was giving blood when
I spotted the notice up on a
board, it was asking people to
volunteer by giving those who
had donated blood a cup of tea
or coffee. I thought to myself,
I could do that, and I did, and
thats how it all started.
Lauraine has since taken up the

role of convenor at Telecross, a
program that provides isolated
people with a daily phone call,
and also volunteers her time to
the families of prisoners.
Its about sitting down with
people and just having a chat,
a lot of people dont have anyone to talk to and with the Red
Cross, they know that anything
they tell us is confidential.
I love giving my time to other
people, it is a real pleasure.
Lauraine, who was appointed
the role of Red Cross president
for a period of two years, also
assists in collecting donations
and may be recognised as the
smiling face at McDonalds in
Bacchus Marsh.
I stand on the corner near the
drive through window with
my little Red Cross bucket and
after people pick up their food
order, they pop their change in
the bucket rather than their car
console. Ive been doing that for
about eight years.
Lauraine said it was a great
honour to have been presented
with the award, especially during a ceremony at Government
House.

It took a fiery debate, but Moorabool has a

new Community Facilities Funding Policy.
Councillors spoke passionately about
Committees of Management when the item
came up at the August 3 council meeting.
The policy guides councils role in the
management of community reserves and
halls, through the provision of annual
operational funding.
The policy had already been endorsed by
councillors to be put out for public exhibition,
with a subsequent report recommending its
adoption.
Woodlands Ward Councillor Pat Toohey
objected to the document, in particular the
user fees and charges.
East Ward Councillor Dave Edwards argued
that the document lays out exactly where the
money goes.
What it does here is protect the rights of
ALL communities. We will fund certain
things, like cutting the grass on the oval.
It just puts guidelines in there for the
Committees of Management, Cr Edwards
said.
West Ward Councillor Tom Sullivan also
objected to the policy, saying that it is not a
guideline but is mandatory.
This is disrespectful, lets give them a pat
on the head, let them lie down and we will
tickle their bellies. This is disrespectful to
Committees of Management, full stop, Cr
Sullivan said.
The motion to adopt the policy was passed,
with Councillors David Edwards, Allan
Comrie, Tonia Dudzik, Paul Tatchell and
John Spain voting in favour.
Councillors Tom Sullivan and Pat Toohey
voted against the motion; a division was
called so that the individual votes will be
officially recorded.
Close to $10-million worth

of property and drugs have
been recovered in the last
year thanks to Crime Stoppers Victoria.
The not-for-profit organisation has celebrated another
year of community crime
fighting and prevention
with the release of its 2015-16
financial year results.
Almost 80,000 phone and
online reports were received
from the community, resulting in a record-breaking
40,000 information reports
being passed onto Victoria
Police for investigation.
This information resulted
in the recovery of $8,062,140
worth of drugs, $1,337,258
worth of property and
$353,485 of cash.
Crime Stoppers Victoria
CEO Sam Hunter said the

results demonstrated Victorias outstanding commitment to detecting and reducing crime.
Information from the community is invaluable and often leads to real results when
it comes to breaking the cy-
cle of crime, he said.

In the past year the community has played an integral role in solving hundreds
of crimes including one
murder, 26 serious assault,
18 armed robberies and nine
sexual assaults.
Other outcomes included
the discovery and dismantling of 100 hydroponic
grow houses, one of which
was found at a Dewar Court
property in Maddingley on
May 4.

community has shown in
assisting our crime fighting
cause, Mr Hunter said.

Tree-mendous planting

The Moorabool Catchment Landcare Group has celebrated another successful

planting day.
Last month, 15 community volunteers managed to get in a whopping 1500 trees
across two properties in Mt Egerton on one day.
These trees are developing bio-diverse stepping stones and shelter belts between
the Wombat State Forest and Brisbane Ranges National Park, in an effort to create
a bio-link which will connect the two forests, said group spokesperson Elle Fox.
A day full of car boggings and human boggings due to the amazing amounts of
rain was concluded with a lunch of hot, homemade soup, burgers and brownies
cooked by Moorabool Catchment Landcare volunteers. A big, big thank you to
all of the volunteers, the landholders and to the National Landcare Program, 20
Million Trees for funding the project.
The MCLG has another community planting day in Mt Egerton on 27 August. If

Strategic
planning for
housing

Low density and nature areas in Bacchus

Marshs new housing strategy have been
saved by council.
The Bacchus Marsh Housing to 2041 Strategy is a consolidated vision that will guide
the future management of growth pressures
in the town.
The strategy was put out for public exhibition with three agencies having made submissions - Western Water, Wyndham City
Council, and the Department of Economic
Development, Jobs, Transport and Resources (DEDJTR).
All were supportive of the proposed strategy though the DEDJTR suggested some
areas that should have increased housing
density.
However, a report prepared by council officers and tabled at the August 3 council
meeting outlined a number of reasons as to
why the areas will remain under-developed.
Three submissions were also made by
members of the public, with the report responding to concerns raised.
The issues concerning integrated neighbourhood planning are all entirely valid
and present a challenge in the non-master
planned areas of Bacchus Marsh which
comprise large sections of Darley and Bacchus Marsh - but not West Maddingley or
Underbank, the report reads.
Council is modelling needs as part of the
Community Infrastructure Framework, examining gaps and ultimately Council will
examine how to remedy these issues.
Much of this concern relates to legacy
development and the Community Infrastructure Framework, paired to improved
cycleways and footpaths (BMITS, Hike and
Bike Strategy) and other initiatives will
over time see improvement in how places
function and therefore the liveability of
neighbourhoods.
At the meeting, West Ward Councillor Tom
Sullivan questioned whether the strategy
would result in Bacchus Marsh becoming a
mini-Melton.
He asked whether the traditional quarteracre block could be maintained within the
plan.
CEO Rob Croxford said there are no neighbourhood characters in the town. The bottom line is around eight per cent are units,
and 92 per cent are houses that might be
able to move toward 85 per cent, 15 per cent.
Mr Croxford said the plan is a bit more positive about where unit development occurs.
The strategy is also expected to assist council in defending matters at VCAT when permit applications have been refused.
The motion to adopt the strategy was
passed, and work will now begin on changes to the planning scheme that must be
made before implementing the strategy.

A life of policing

From growing up in Ballan to
becoming the towns top cop,
Ken Tingate knows he is leaving
the safety of his community in
good hands.
Having served as Senior
Sergeant in charge of Ballan for
13 years, Mr Tingate is retiring
after a 39-year career that saw
him serve in many areas in and
around Moorabool.
I started off in Melbourne, city
traffic for 18 months, then I went
to Ballarat and was up there for
the next five years, and then I
went down to Broadmeadows
for six years, Mr Tingate
explained.
I got promoted to Sergeant
and from there I went to Melton,
and I was in Bacchus Marsh
temporarily for 12 months.
And in 2004, I was fortunate
enough to take over the position
of Senior Sergeant in charge of
Ballan.
He knew what he was in for.
Ive lived in Ballan all my life.
Not only has Mr Tingate always
lived in the town, but he and
wife Rosalie raised their four

children there too.
As a family man, its the fullcircle of local families that has
been the most surprising aspect
of policing Ballan.
Its the number of young
people who grew up and
decided it was still such a good
place to live that theyre raising
their own children round the
area.
But there have also been
changes in local crime.
Unfortunately, Ballan is on the
major route between Ballarat
and Melbourne, so we get a lot
of transient misbehavers.
But by and large, were
considered one of the safer
places to raise a family.
Over his career, Mr Tingate
saw Bacchus Marsh go from
a 12-hour station to a 24-hour
station; he oversaw the Gordon
station while at Ballan; and also
took his place on the Moorabool
Emergency
Management
Planning Committee.
I worked with some very
competent people there, we
put in a lot of planning for
unforeseen emergencies in the

shire, and thankfully weve
avoided most disasters - and if
they did happen to occur, then
were pretty well managed.
With Mr Tingate having been
off work for the past two years
on medical leave, it has already
been a bit of a practice-run at the
station for his official retirement.
The workers there have still
managed to do an excellent job
of looking after the community.
After such a lengthy career
in law enforcement, a big
retirement party was called for...
with a bit of the humour that
locals are used to.
I can see who likes me or
whether they just want to see
me gone.
His retirement plans are
simple.
Kick back and relax, do a bit
of travelling, spend more time
with the family.
But the habit of a lifetime is
hard to break.
and continue to help people
where I can.

Councillors were divided when adopting

a new framework to manage the shires
recreation reserves.
After heated debate, the Recreation
Reserve Management Framework was
adopted at the August 3 council meeting,
held in Bacchus Marsh.
The framework is designed to govern how
council manages facilities throughout the
shire, in a more co-ordinated and consistent
way, including issues around governance,
management of use, financial management
and accountability.
Despite the document having been
endorsed by council previously for an
eight-week exhibition period, West Ward
Councillor Tom Sullivan objected to the
recommendation made by council officers
to adopt the framework
East Ward Councillor Dave Edwards
pointed out the policy has already
gone through a number of groups and
organisations for consultation, adding that
it covers the bigger picture.
Cr Sullivan however argued the framework
is disappointing, and will restrict the roles
of volunteers.
I find it very disappointing with
partnerships with groups it is not
partnerships, it is a takeover. It flies in the

face of community groups with volunteers.
Council is saying forget you, we are going
to do this. - it talks about council funding
conditions these are volunteers, not
professionals, Cr Sullivan said.
We didnt even have the courtesy of
functionality of how one end of the shire
works to the other... now we are going to tell
you what to do, he said.
Woodlands Ward Councillor Pat Toohey
agreed with Cr Sullivan, saying committees
who do not have the volunteers to do the
work for the funding processes will miss
out.
I fear volunteers will say well if you want
to run the show, you run the show, Cr
Toohey said.
Were saying if you dont toe the line you
wont get your cheque. We have a lack of
discussion in the document about what
volunteers do, how much in-kind they do
etc etc.

Truth, Justice and the ABC

The ABC is one of the few
media organisations that
continues the tradition of
investigative
reporting
in its purest form; acting
as the peoples voice, the
ABC doesnt do glamour, it
doesnt pay million dollar
salaries and it doesnt turn
presenters into over-dressed
super models in designer
wardrobes.
The tax-payer funded organisation competes without the benefit of the lucrative advertising dollar, on a
budget that would pale into
insignificance compared to
the billion dollar budgets
and the bright lights of its
commercial
counterparts;
and it holds its own.
You may have noticed that
I am a big fan of the public broadcaster; it punches
above its weight division,
and manages to retain some
of the best journalists in the
country, defying the realities
of chequebook journalism.
When you consider how
often commercial networks
feed off ABC investigations
as a platform for breaking
news, they are an underrated resource for producers
and audiences alike.

Whilst I acknowledge the
ABC is given far more tolerance in terms of the media
umpires and watchdogs, like
the Australian Press Council; in fact the ABC has its
own legislation in terms of
recourse on public comment
that could be considered offensive or defamatory; some
would suggest that it is almost a parliamentary privilege, and the broadcaster
is often accused of flying a
little close to the wind when
it comes to naming and
shaming.
This brings me to my point.
Last weeks story about
George Pell on the 7.30 programme took perception to a
whole new level in terms of
journalistic bias with dubious intent. Whilst I would be
the last person to question
allegations by victims on
the inappropriate behaviour
of adults towards children,
and in this case allegations
against Australias highest
profile senior cleric, I become increasingly nervous
when the public broadcaster
assumes the role of public
prosecutor.
Whilst I am anything but a

supporter of George Pell, I
believe that George Pell like
every other Australian, is
entitled to a legal process;
regardless of personal viewpoints where emotion can
sometimes cloud reasoning.
Whilst allegations of sexual
abuse on children should always be investigated beyond
reasonable doubt, we cant
have truth, justice and the
ABC.
Investigative reporting is
not about forming judgement then pursuing evidence to justify that judgement within the realms of
probability. Presenting untested evidence into the public arena when the defendant of the claims hasnt been
investigated or questioned
creates a mine field of risks
in terms of natural justice.
Putting aside the only
known fact that after an 18
month investigation into allegations made that didnt
include questioning of the
alleged perpetrator, and the
Office of Public Prosecutions
returned the investigation
brief for no further action;
puts in to question both the
investigative report and the

ABCs ability to maintain
a neutral position on emotional bias.
Whilst I appreciate the enormity of the journalists work
in uncovering the story, and
the difficulties of presenting allegations by alleged
victims of crime, we are all
entitled to as George Pell has
stated, a fair go. When you
put the emotion to one side,
putting that fair go into
any form of Perspective
sees the need for us to walk
in the same shoes as the accused whilst acknowledging
the pain of the accuser.
The fine line of justice for
all is always tested by emotion but sustained by practical evidence, and neither
should be compromised by
paranoia or public perception. Historical cases add a
further element by the dust
of time, and the revelations
once the dust lifts of another
time and place; even cold
cases need to be proved beyond reasonable doubt, not
by media.
Whilst we all hope for vilification, the coin has two sides
and one cannot be ignored
over the other in terms of

what we perceive to be just,
regardless of historical probabilities, or previous form in
unproven offenses; the very
reason why the hangmens
noose became rope in the
cupboard.
Walking in the Cardinals

shoes is the same as our own
when seen through the Perspective of self; if the judgement of media is reflected
into allegation devoid of
legal process to defend, you
are only left with perception.
I doubt any of us would wish
to be judged on perception,
and 20 minutes of news footage on 18 months of evidence
is not even rough justice.
Imagine sitting in front of
the television watching a
report on allegations against
yourself three decades ago
in a public swimming pool,
or public change rooms
without any recourse in
terms of defence when the
matter cant be tested. Getting a fair go seems a reasonable proposition to me,
and the reality is that if it
hadnt been George Pell, the
ABC wouldnt have touched
it regardless of their journalistic privileges.
The system isnt perfect,

nor is the human beings its
prescribed to protect. Its
reasonable to suggest that
there are more guilty people
enjoying freedom than innocent people incarcerated.
The justice system should be
reflected by our own expectations of right to a fair go.
We live in challenging
times; what was acceptable
in terms of potential risk in
times gone by is now controlled by that same potential of risk going forward.

Car show spectacular

Jarrad Solomon is not your average artist.
The Bacchus Marsh man has a gift for spray
painting but his canvas is not a wall, its a
vehicle.
Owner of Cre8tive Edge Auto Refinishing,
Jarrod restores vehicles back to their original
colour, and his talent has seen him appear in the
Melbourne Showgrounds Superstars Room.
Jarrad repaired and refinished a 1955 Ford
Truck and a 1963 Volkswagen Kombi, both
which appeared at the prestigious Meguiars
MotorEx Car Show on July 16 and 17.
The palomino metallic Ford, owned by Bacchus
Marsh resident Jeremy Burnett, was invited into
the Superstars Room with just 20 other vehicles
from across the nation.
The turquoise Volkswagen Kombi, owned by
local Paul Psaila, appeared in the main arena
of the show and took out the award for Best
Overall Exhibition.
Jarrad, who began his career at the age of 17,
said he never expected to see his work appear in
such an esteemed show.
Im pretty happy with myself. In the
Superstars Room, there was $1.8 million spent
on refinishing the winner, so the level of
competition was pretty crazy. The Ford Truck
ranked about 12th or 13th out of the 20 cars and
I was happy with that. My budget, compared to
what some of the others had, just wasnt there,
yet the truck does look very nice.
To have the work of just a little shop appear in
what is a pretty big show was just unreal.
The 34-year-old was employed as a specialist
car restorer for Austin Healy, Marsh Classic
Restorations, for a period of eight years, before
going out on his own.
Cre8tive Edge Auto Refinishing, located
at 3 Smith Street in Maddingley, has since served the community and

surrounds for half a decade.
Jarrad has also painted cars imported from all over the world, including
Switzerland and Geneva.

Price growth in family homes

The latest REIV data shows family

homes remain popular with buyers,
delivering solid price growth in the
year to June 30.
Median house price growth was
widespread across Victoria - from
Gippsland, to the states north and
west, as well as a number of locations
within commuting distance of
Melbourne.
Three-bedroom houses in Drouin,
east of Melbourne, recorded one of
the states largest price increases
over the year, up more than 18 per
cent to a median house price of
$330,000. This was up from $278,500

for the same period last year.
This was closely followed by fourbedroom properties in Traralgon
in the Latrobe Valley, where the
median house price rose 17.2 per cent
to $390,500.
Double-digit growth for threebedroom homes was recorded in
a number of regional towns over
the year including Kyneton, up 14.1
per cent to a median of $465,000;
Mildura, up 13.6 per cent to $250,000;
Warragul, up 11.9 per cent to
$330,000; and Shepparton, up 11.5
per cent to $252,500.

Three and four-bedroom homes
in the coastal town of Torquay
experienced significant annual
growth, both up by 10 per cent to
median house prices of $626,250 and
$690,000 respectively.
Other areas experiencing solid
annual price growth for threebedroom homes include Sale, up
9.6 per cent to a median of $279,500;
Wodonga, up 6.5 per cent to $275,000;
Geelong West, up 6.4 per cent to
$526,500; and Ocean Grove, up 6.4
per cent to $500,000.
Meanwhile, annual price growth

was also seen at the opposite end of
the spectrum.
In the year to June 30, the statewide
median price for one-bedroom units
increased 2.3 per cent to $163,750, up
from $160,000 for the same period
last year.
And three-bedroom units recorded
significant price growth, up 3.8 per
cent over the year to a median of
$342,500.

Last weekend the G B Forestry Cobras welcomed Melton to

Maddingley Park. In the football the seniors had a very hard fought
out game, Melton turned up to play and led at each change. Melton
were always able to reply each time the boys scored a goal and
it was not till the last quarter when the boys finally got their game
going. Logan Blundell put in a massive quarter which allowed the
boys to hang on with a 6 point victory. To say we got out of jail is
an understatement however we continue to sit in 2nd spot on the
ladder with only 2 games remaining. Best on the day were A. Del
Papa, L. Blundell, T. Shea, D. Veldon, M. Denham & T. Angwin.
In the reserves, the game was practically over by half time as
the boys held a 46 point lead keeping Melton to only 1 goal. In
the second half the boys continued on with their brand of football
running out victors by 76 points. Best on the day were T. Hughes,
J. Bissell, T. Mullen, T. Castrignano, M. Whittle, D. Walker.
The U18s got off to a very slow start and at quarter time Doug
Hawkins who was not impressed with what he had seen by
the boys in the first quarter ensured they understood what was
required. By half time the boys had turned the game around taking
a 20 point lead into the main break. The second half became a
real arm wrestle however our boys eventually ran out victors by
35 points. Best on the day were D. Bishop, L. Pigott, Z. Miesen, J.
Calvitto, S. Griffiths, T. Dickinson.
In Netball, again the girls had mixed results.
The A graders unfortunately lost their game by 5 goals, best on
the day was K. Ingham, C. Manumua & O. Mitchell.
The B graders had a magnificent victory by 13 goals and still have
a slight chance to play finals, best on the day was L. Prout, B.
Walsh & L. Tyrrell.
The C graders also had a great overall team effort and ran out
victorious by 10 goals and still have a chance to play finals, best
on the day was G. Pino, K. Pawlowicz & K. McKerrow.
The D graders were not so lucky on the day being beaten by 16
goals, best on the day were S. Davies, A. Bamford & A. Reynolds.
The 19 and Unders were also unfortunate on the day going
down by 30 goals, best on the day was E. Bettio, M. Arandt, & B.
Pawlowicz.
In the Womens Football the girls unfortunately lost their Semi-Final
by 7 points. If not for some very inaccurate kicking, the end result
may have been different. Best on the day were A. Bertram, E.
Crawford, L. Stepnell, Z. Clarke, C. Thorne, T. Curran

The one that got away

The Seniors last home game
for the year was played in
ideal conditions in front of
a big crowd including the
Life Members and sponsors.
The Blues were under no illusions as to their challenge
and Buninyong opened well
with a small lead at the first
break. But the Blues were
certainly in the hunt. Following the main break the
Blues played some of their
best football for the year
and had the bulk of the ball
but repeatedly the Blues
were unable to score the six
points. The Blues had far
more opportunities up forward than their opponents,
but ran out of time and will
rue the chance that got away.
Justin McConnell played at
both ends of the ground and
certainly showed his class as
did Jason McNamara in the
middle. Dylan Galea put in
faultless performance as did
Sammy Hitchings.
Next week the Blues venture to Hepburn for the last
match of the 2016 CHFL
home and away season.

The Reserves took on the

leagues best team and despite being undermanned
were bolstered with the addition of Daniel Neilsen, a
late inclusion to the backline.
Buninyong were certainly
a slick outfit and it looked
like there was going to be
a real blow out, but to the
Blues credit they had some
patches of great teamwork.
Justin Fenwick burst out
of the centre bounce and
kicked a memorable long
bomb that got the Blues rolling. DanChristie and David
Bell did gain their share of
the action in the middle but
Buninyong were ruthless
with any wayward kick by
the Blues. The Blues backline did a great job under
the pressure of the day. Next
week will be a chance for the
Blues to finish on a high.

Buninyongs Under 18s
were a surprise package
whose position on the ladder did not reflect their skill
base. The match was neck
and neck for the first half
but the Blues were unable to
get clear air up forward and
Buninyong had too much
height around the ground.
In the second half the Blues
were held goal less and the
Bombers were relentless.
SImo as ever gave 100 percent in the middle as did
Aaron Pascoe. The Blues are
still in the finals actions but
next week will be a great test

before the finals start.

the league leader and were
shown how far they need to
improve to be the best. Buninyong were clinical with

his head high and the Pascoe
boys gave a stella effort. The
boys will learn allot from the
match before the finals start.

The Under 12s match was a
real nail biter that went right
down to the wire and the
Blues finally got the lead in
the final quarter, and nearly
lost the lead in the dying
seconds of the match. Cody
Gates bagged the two goals
that locked in the result but
he had plenty of helpers. An
impressive win that showed
the teams great tenacity to
win.

Cross Country returned to

the Bostock Reservoir, Ballan last Saturday morning.
All races commenced from
the main carpark area before heading down the hill
and along the bank of the
reservoir. While the junior
athletes turned at the half
way mark and ran back to
the finish, our intermediate
and senior athletes headed
out along the fire track
through the plantations and
back. There were13 athletes
awarded PBs after their
performance.
This Saturday will be the
Centres final home run
to be held at Masons Lane
Reserve. All events will be
conducted on a handicap
system, where athletes will
start off using handicap
staggered times that have
been calculated from season results. Athletes should
arrive early so organisers
know who is competing and
handicap times can be finalised. The first race will commence at 10.30am.
The theme of the final meet
will be Footy (AFL, NRL,
Soccer etc) with all athletes
and spectators encouraged
to get involved.
