Procedure Fall
Use the circuit in Figure 1 (from the Lab-in-a-Box book Experiment 8 Mesh Current and Node Voltage Analysis)
Figure 1
Let V1 = 5V, V2 = 9V, R1 = 470, R2 = 1000, R3 = 1200, R4 = 270, R5 = 680
A. Analysis
1. Write the three mesh current equations for the circuit.
2. Define iL and vL in terms of the variables for your loop currents and resistors.
iL =
I3
vL =
I3R5
3. Solve the equations for the values of I1, I2, and I3 (your loop currents). Calculate iL and vL .
I1
I2
I3
vL
1.202 mA
5.529 mA
3.234 mA
-2.199
iL
-3.234 mA
5. Define iL and vLin terms of the variables for your node voltages and resistors.
iL =
(Vx Vy) / R5
vL =
Vx Vy
6. Solve the equations for VX and VY (your node voltages). Calculate iL and vL .
VX

VY
6.6342
vL

iL
-3.234
How do the load voltage and current calculated from the mesh currents compare to the values
calculated from the node voltages? They are exactly the same.
B. Modeling
1. Before you model the circuit, measure your actual resistor values with the DMM.

2. Model the circuit in Pspice with the measured resistor values. Turn on bias display for V and I and run the
simulation. Check the direction of each current. Record the simulated values for the voltages and currents.
Add a text that says "your name, ECE2074 - Lab 04" to the schematic above your circuit.

How do the Pspice bias values compare to the calculated voltages and currents?
They are very close to exact.
C. Measurements
1. Construct the circuit on the ANDY board. Use correct color coding for wires, good wiring practice, and
proper meter lead connections. The 5VDC and 9VDC supplies are on the ANDY board.
2. Use your Multimeter to measure the actual Voltage and Current values, including the ANDY board power
supplies (V1 and V2). Use caution when measuring current!
Make sure your meter leads do are not in the current shunt when you measure voltage!
Calculate the errors of your measurements compared to the simulated values.
Measured VX
4.45 V
VX error
.3 percent
Measured VY
6.65 V
VY error
.24 percent
Measured vL
2.18 V
vL error
.87 percent
Measured iL = IR5
3.23 mA
iL error
2.8 percent

How do these measured values compare to the calculated and simulated values? Almost all are within a
single percent accurate.
1. (25 points) The GTA will check your Pspice schematic and bias simulation.
VX =________________, VY =_________________, iL =_________________
2. (25 points) The GTA will select any TWO of your measurements for VX , VY, or vL.
Vselected = ___________________, ___________________, ___________________ (only 2 required)
3. (25 points) What loading and voltage drop effects does your meter have on the circuit being measured?
4. (25 points) The GTA will evaluate your wiring, probe connections, component values, and meter setup /
measurement techniques.
10 points will be deducted for each item (component, probe lead, power supply, etc.) that you must borrow
from the GTA to validate.
5. IMPORTANT: The GTA will swipe your hokie passport and enter your grade into the data base.
Before you leave the lab, check your email for the card swipe confirmation and the accuracy of your grade.
Do not leave the lab until you have verified that your grade was submitted correctly.
Save the confirmation email until your grade appears correctly in scholar
