INTELLIGENCE FOR THE WINE CONSUMER

BY LEN NAPOLITANO

What is corkage?
Is it okay to bring my own bottle of wine to a restaurant?
A wine list that is either too limited or overpricedor both!may
motivate you to pack a bottle of your own on subsequent trips to the
restaurant. Another reason could be the wine list is geared toward
mass-produced, national brands or lacking a variety of styles. This is
not implying that wine by a national brand is not good. But some of
these big names seem to be everywhere and sometimes you just want
a special bottle of wine to make the occasion more memorable. If
youre thinking of bringing your own wine to a restaurant, keep these
tips in mind:
If you are uncertain about the restaurants policy, call in advance or
check its website to find out. Some restaurants dont permit private
party wine, a restriction more acceptable if their wine list is extensive,
diverse, and reasonably priced.
Choose a wine that is special. In other words, dont bring an
ordinary supermarket brand that is available everywhere. If possible,
avoid bringing a bottle the restaurant already has on its listmany
restaurants publish their wine lists on their websites. To be safe,
choose an older vintage they are less likely to offer.
Expect to pay a restaurant charge, known as corkage fee. This

10

pays for the server opening and pouring your wine and providing a
bucket for keeping a white wine chilled. Corkage usually ranges from
$5.00 to $25.00, depending on the restaurant. Some waive this fee if
another bottle is also ordered from the wine list.
As a courtesy, offer a taste to either your server, restaurant manager
or sommelier. It is always appreciated, especially if you bring an older
wine, or one from an little known, high-quality producer.
Tip your server based upon your dinner price and add to it the
approximate value of the wine you brought.

Michael Gill Cellars

Westside Wine Tasting in Paso Robles
Hidden in the foothills of Paso Robles, Michael Gill Cellars is an
exquisite vineyard specializing in luxurious Rhone varietals. The
boutique winery offers limited allocation wines in an idyllic setting.
Thanks to the areas rocky clay soil, the winery is dry farmed,
allowing grapes to express their true character.
We are not corporate, we dont try to mass produce anything,
said Founding Vintner Michael Gill. I want to keep everything small
and really let the essence of the grape be displayed in the wine.
Planting his first grapes in 1998, Gill started originally with
Syrah, selling to local winemakers in the area. In 2012, he decided
to build his own winery, establishing himself from a wine enthusiast
to a wine connoisseur.

Raw and Wild Rhone Wines

Hot days and cool nights offer the perfect growing conditions
for their award-winning Syrah and Tempranillo. As a small,
family vineyard, the winery lets the grapes talk, with independent
controlled production. Their Best of Class 2013 Tempranillo
Tantrum has hints of blood orange and grenadine, with a
pomegranate berry nuance. This wine is great paired with any
grilled food or dessert.
Our wines are raw and wild, beyond the wildest expectations of
14

our customers, said Gill. With the use of dry farming, we are able
to get back to the basics and let nature direct us.
Converting many non-white drinkers to white wine, the winery
also produces luxurious Viognier and Vermentino. Sample their
2013 Oso Blanco Vermentino, a great summer wine with flavors of
vanilla, mandarin orange, and banana. The apricot and white peace
nose pairs great with Thai food.

One of a Kind Tasting Room

Inspired by the beauty of Frenchhunting lodges, the tasting
room evokes aclassicism unique to Paso Robles. The tasting
room is outfitted with hunting trophies (and animals) from
Gills adventures, including Top 10 awards from Safari Club
International. Warm wood, stone, and marble evoke fine
craftsmanship, paired alongside a collection of art from a lifetime of
international travel.
We wanted to create something totally unique for the tasting room,
something people will remember, said Gill. I always joke that it is
both a tasting room and a miniature museum of natural history!
Nestled by surrounding vineyardsand centuries-old oaks, the
tasting room terrace offers an idyllic vantage point of the foothills,
where guests can experience the beauty of Westside wine tasting.

Environmental Stewards of the Land

San Antonio Winery is proud to announce the grand opening of its energy
efficient winery and production facility in Paso Robles. The new winery is
designed for crafting premium wines using sustainable techniques that conserve
energy, water and reduce waste.
Our commitment to Paso Robles goes well beyond the wines we produce and
our tasting rooms, Owner, Anthony Riboli says. We love it here, and we want
to be a good neighbor, so we made the investments to ensure we are exceedingly
energy and water efficient as well as environmentally appreciative.
The new facility features energy-efficient LED lighting, both closed-top and
open-top tanks, and a cellar that boasts four separate barrel spaces to allow the
winemakers to ferment and store barrels at ideal temperatures. The cellar also
has temperature controls, to ensure the cooling system isnt running during chilly
nights, saving on energy demands. The entire winery is air-cooled to save water
and all process wastewater and storm water is reclaimed for irrigation purposes
onsite.
This modern and energy-efficient winery will allow us to continue to produce
high-quality, award-winning wines with every vintage, said Riboli.

A Century of Excellence
As one of the oldest producing wineries in California, San Antonio Winery was
built upon tradition, with four generations of the Riboli family involved in the art
of traditional winemaking.
My grandparents still come in every day, they are very much a part of the
process, said Riboli. I love being able to share what we are doing, what is new
they are very supportive.

Wine Country This Month >> Wine Country News

Anthony Riboli is the first member of the fourth
generation to join the family business, overseeing all
of the winemaking and grape growing. Since his first
harvest in 1997, he knew there was opportunity to
bring a new perspective to winemaking. With a masters
degree in viticulture from UC Davis, Riboli has worked
hard to make San Antonio Winery the most awarded
winery in Southern California.
I love the whole winemaking process. Mother
Nature does not make it easy, thats the challenge but
where the passion is, said Anthony Riboli. Every
year is different but we always strive to keep our wines
consistent.

Central Coast Portfolio

With rich history and deep roots in the wine
industry, the winery has several award-winning brands
from Paso Robles and Monterey.
The Opaque label produces big dark wines
out of Paso Robles. The 2013 Opaque Zinfandel,
impenetrable to light, refers to the dark, inky color
of the familys Zinfandel. Originally from Croatia, the
varietal reveals ripe flavors of blackberry, boysenberry
and black cherry with accents of spice and dark cocoa.
Im really loving our Opaque Zinfandel, with bright
raspberry and blackberry notes, said Riboli. To me
its an ideal Zinfandel, bright dark fruit, without the
sweetness of Port.
San Simeon is another bestselling label. Experience
the 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon, a brilliant wine under
$30 offering bright aromas of raspberry and black
cherry. Adding a small percentage of Petit Verdot for
complexity, the wine offers ripe flavors of spicy plum
and currant.
The Maddalena series, named after Anthonys
grandmother Maddalena and daughter Alena, is inspired
by their Italian heritage. The 2014 Muscat Canelli is
a tradition in their family, a rare wine with very few
plantings in California. The wine offers aromas of
orange peel and honeysuckle, sweet and crisp with
flavors of apricot and lychee.

Taste the Central Coast

Located right off the 46 in Paso Robles, the petfriendly winery invites guests to come and taste the
best of Paso Robles Wine Country, offers a collection of
foreign and domestic wines, light and bubbly sparklers,
craft beers, as well as a newly opened bistro with artisan
pizzas and pastas.
We have something for everyone, said Riboli. We
want to make wine less intimidating, we want the
customer to have fun.

CALCAREOUS VINEYARD
A Place Like No Other
Perhaps it is the Shangri-La like setting,
1800 feet above sea level overlooking
the valley below. Perhaps the breeze, the
tranquility and the land producing the
grapes that makes Calcareous Vineyard a
place like no other. Blend the land, the
vista, and award-winning wines, with the
people of Calcareous to experience magical
moments as you visit sip and relax in the
tasting room or on the tranquil patio.
Calcareous Vineyard and their wines have
been described as: Fantastic, awesome, amazing, fantabulous; this
is just one of the many reasons they were recently awarded the Trip
Advisor Certificate of Excellence for 2016, an award bestowed by
real people who have experienced and commented on their visit to
this unique winery--which IS a place like no other.

A Dream Fulfilled
Award Winning Terroir Driven Wines
Lloyd Messer and his daughter Dana Brown, wine distributors
in Iowa, purchased land in 2000, atop this calcareous plateau, with
the dream of producing world class wines, expressive of the terroir
and the unique micro climates that can be found in Paso Robles
various AVAs.
The year 2006 was pivotal to Calcareous Vineyard. Sadly,
Lloyd passed away that year, which was the same year Calcareous
produced their first estate vintage. Although Lloyd didnt live to see
the culmination of the vintage, 2006 was the genesis of his dream
20

being fulfilled, and Dana remains firmly

entrenched in the business to this day,
helping to fulfill the dream and carry on
her fathers vision.
Slowly and carefully Calcareous
Vineyard proceeded to build a
following, producing quality wines
reflecting characteristics of the fruit
and its terroir. Hard work and
determination was rewarded when
the 2009 vintage firmly established
their standing in the wine community,
receiving two 92 point and one 90 point
rating from Wine Spectator magazine. Each vintage since 2009
Calcareous Vineyard has received impressive scores for multiple
wines; Wine Spectator, Wine Advocate and the San Francisco
Chronicle are only some of the parties that have consistently
recognized the excellence of Calcareous Vineyard wines.
Additionally, in Wine Spectators April 2015 article 9 Powerful
Reds from Paso Robles, four of Calcareous Vineyards wines made
the list.
Having three distinct vineyards, Calcareous Vineyard is in a
unique position to produce terroir driven wines in the Bordeaux,
Rhone and Burgundian style. Carver Vineyard, in York Mountain,
is so special, that fruit from this vineyard is used exclusively
for single varietal designated wines. Winemaker Jason Joyce,
constantly thinking outside the box, experimenting, changing and
blending, is the heart and soul of the winemaking creative team.
He is the wine alchemist, recently introducing a ZSM (Zin, Syrah
and Merlot) blend that is unique, distinct and, wellWOW may
be the most apt description.

DRAGONETTE CELLARS
A Committed Triumvirate
In 2005, brothers John and Steve Dragonnette, along with their close friend Brandon SparksGillis, wine geeks extraordinaire, founded Dragonette Cellars. Santa Barbara County was their
destination, with a vision and commitment to produce the finest wines, reflective of the diverse
terroir, giving special attention to farming practices and care of the land. Their success is evident
by the wines produced, the ratings and awards they have received and validated by their loyal
followers, which is ultimately the true test of success.

A Simple Philosophy
The beauty of their wines is mirrored in the simplicity of their philosophy, we are wine growers,
not winemakers say Steve Dragonette, who coaxes the grapes to produce all they can to echo the
characteristics of the individual varietal, clone and plot of land they come from.
In their quest and commitment to produce only the best, Dragonette Cellars sources from the
premier vineyards in the area. Fruit is purchased from vineyards such as Vogelzang and Grassini
Family Vineyards (within the Happy Canyon AVA for their Sauvignon Blanc), Fiddlestix, John
Sebastiano and Radian, to name but a few of the 17 vineyards contracted with. The dedication to
quality, achieved through a devotion to the planted vine is paramount. First, the Dragonettes look
for vineyards that are sustainably, bio dynamically and organically farmed. Once a plot is chosen,
John and Brandon are hands on in the vineyards daily, making all vineyard decisions. They farm
each row in every vineyard where the grape will eventually bear the Dragonette name.
A visit to the tasting room, where Jen Dragonette tours you through the current releases is a treat,
both to the pallet and to understanding the devotion that goes into making these small production
ultra-premium wines. After a sip of Radian Pinot Noir, the MJM Syrah or any of these wines, you
will instinctively understand their unique appeal. No shortcut is taken, no barrel is ever rushed
to bottling. Buy the wines now to enjoy with your favorite food, or lay them down to age. Either
way, you will have a singular experience with each sip and each bottle produced by Steve, John and
Brandon, for your enjoyment.
In the words of Antonio Galloni: Dragonette is one of the most fascinating wineries in the
Central Coast. The best wines are truly world class, and I dont use those words lightly.

Wine Tasting in San Luis Obispo County

28

ts no wonder the people here call it

SLO. No one is in any hurry in the
cafes or on the sidewalks, and ce
rtainly no one is in any rush to leave.
Strangers are genuinely friendly, always
ready to talk about their favorite hiking
trail or barbecue joint, or to point the
way to the winery with the best Pinot
Noir. Its all part of the SLO life, that
combination of good stuff that makes
visiting here so nourishing to the soul.
San Luis Obispos unusual natural
beauty, along with its gentle climate,
first attracted the Spanish padres to the
area in the 1700s. In 1772 they built
the fifth of Californias 21 missions
here, on the banks of San Luis Creek,
and named it Mission San Luis Obispo
de Tolosa. Today, many consider this
the most beautiful of the Spanish
missions.
More than 200 wineries produce
critically acclaimed vintages in Paso
Robles, Edna Valley and Arroyo Grande
Valley. Visitors can head out along the
gorgeous country roads to sip their way
through the vineyards.

San Luis Obispo Wine Country: Six Themed Tasting Trails

San Luis Obispo (SLO) Wine Country
on Californias Central Coast may be a small
oceanfront region, but the wine tasting
possibilities are almost limitlessas evidenced by
the six themed tasting trails.
Visitors can build local itineraries around a
range of lifestyles and wine styles, from urban
tasting rooms to beachfront wine tasting. The
trails are highlighted in the new SLO Wine
Country tasting maps, as well as at www.
SLOWine.com.
SLO Wine Country is an intimate coastal
region with less than 30 wineries, but theres also
a ton of diversity here, too, said Heather Muran,
executive director of SLO Wine Country. These
wine trails really showcase all that we have to
offer, and they enable you to follow your personal
tastes and timeline as you tour the region.

Good to Know Before

Heading to the Wineries
BY CHARLES NEAVE
For the most part, going wine
tasting is about the easiest thing in
the world, especially in California
where wineries and tasting rooms
abound. Mostly, wine tasting is a
matter of doing a little research and
planning your day. Here are some
tips that have proven to be helpful
and are designed to help make the
sensory adventure of wine tasting
all the more enjoyable.
Before you start off, pack a few
essentials. Water (plenty of
water) and something to snack
oncrackers or a baguette.
Many wineries have picnic areas
and there are plenty of delis and
bakeries that can make up a lunch
for you, or make your own.
Be sure to nibble during the day and
make time for lunch. Two tips: drink
at least twice as much water as
you do wine, and remember that
you dont have to drink everything
poured into your glass.
Dont be afraid to ask questions.
Time again I have heard
knowledgeable winery workers
say that there is no such thing as
a stupid question, and they mean
that.
You can drink what you want, in the
order you want. If you like reds, say
so; if you dont like sweet wines,
speak up. But the idea of starting
with whites, then going on to reds
and then sweet wines is a good
guide.
If there is a particular wine you want
to try and it is not on the list, ask. Most
tasting rooms are happy to pour a
little if you show enthusiasm.
Look for tasting rooms in towns.
Many of these are cooperative
tasting rooms, where in one place
you might find wines from a
dozen or more small-to-medium
premium producers.

Im really proud of our wines, says Winemaker

balance between fruit and acid. I love finding those
notes that elevate what the grapes already have
to offer and then creating something special that
screams Paso Robles.
The 2016 Central Coast Wine Competition
included more than 700 wines from the entire
Central Coast AVA as far north as San Francisco
and south to Ventura County. It wrapped up six months of a

Sinor-LaVallee
A Story of Terroir
Sinor-LaVallee, founded in 1997 by Mike Sinor and Cheri
LaVallee-Sinor, is a chapter in an adventure which began when they
met while attending Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. What started out
as college jobs at local wineries, soon became their passion as they
became more immersed in the craft of winemaking and studying
the art of Pinot Noir. This led to travels abroad, where the couple
not only married in France, but continued their appreciation of the
magnificent terroir of Burgundy and its acclaimed wines. Known
for his determination and enthusiasm, Sinor is recognized as one of
the Central Coasts most highly rated and recognized winemakers
and the recipient of the acclaimed Winemaker of the Year award
for San Luis Obispo County in 2012. Self-taught in the craft of
winemaking, Sinor is winemaker who truly believes great wines
begin in the vineyard.

Bassi Vineyard
Throughout the years Sinor-LaVallee has sourced fruit from
many acclaimed vineyards such as Talley-Rincon, Byron and
Aubaine properties. With the commencement of vintage 2013,
all of the winerys offerings are derived from the estates Bassi
Vineyard. With its close proximity of 1.2 miles from the Pacific
Ocean, the Bassi Vineyard in Avila Valley is paradisiacal. A hilltop
seascape of San Luis Bay to the west welcomes the morning
coastal fog as it casts its maritime influence, combined with
oceanic soils to tell a story of the land -- rich in history, with
viticulture influences which result in complex wines that intrigue
and delight with their layers of aromas and taste, inviting you to
discover more. Organically farmed with biodynamic inputs, the
Bassi Vineyards plantings of Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, Albario,
Syrah and the iconic Pinot Noir, have limited yields lending to a
natural intensity that is a true expression of the location. Sinor
feels that Our wines naturally reflect their pronounced coastal

terroir, as well as the impassioned viticulture handwork that we

bring to our vines and soils. The effect of these elements is highly
local and personalthe hallmarks of Sinor-LaVallee. Our focus
is in learning the story (Terroir)of our Estate vineyard and telling
that story through our wines. The message is the vineyard; the
messenger is the wine.

Tasting Experience
The Sinor-LaVallee Tasting Room is located in picturesque
Avila Beach, a short one block from the beach. With its sunny
location and panoramic view, the tasting room is the perfect
sojourn for wine enthusiasts. An impressive selection of wines
by-the-glass or a $10 Tasting Flight of the winerys White label,
Black (Reserve) label and SLO Estate series are available, along
with a limited quantity of library selections. Wines include a
Chardonnay, Albario, Pinot Gris, Pinot Noir, Syrah and Cuvee.
You can also enjoy a delicious cheese plate from Fromagerie
Sophie, thoughtfully paired with Sinor-LaVallee wines.
Sinor-LaVallee is located at 550 1st Street, Avila Beach. The
tasting room is open ThursdayMonday 12-6pm, with extended
hours in the summer. You may call (805) 459-9595, email: www.

Wine Tasting in Santa Barbara County

38

A Spirit and Passion for Winemaking

O

n the southern end of the Central Coast appellation, lies Santa Barbara Countys historic
wine growing region. The first vineyard production in these rolling coastal hills dates back to
1782, when Junipero Serra planted vines on Mission land. About a hundred years later, there
was 260 acres of luscious vineyards and seventeen winemakers in Santa Barbara County. Sadly,
the Prohibition Era destroyed many of these historic vineyard sites and mostly put an end to
winemaking in the regionas was the case in many of the beautiful winegrowing regions across
the state. With that being said, the spirit and passion for winemaking never left Santa Barbara
County, and this wine growing region is alive and well today. Talented winemakers are producing
outstanding and pure terroir driven wines from the five American Viticultural Areas (AVAs), planted
mostly to Burgundian, Rhne and Bordeaux grape varieties.
Although the movie Sideways is said to have put San Barbara Countys wine growing region on
the map in 2004, especially the Santa Maria Valley AVA, it is the high quality of the wine across
the county that has continued to uphold this bountiful regions reputation. Sprawling vineyards
and gently rolling hills create a picturesque scene for visitors and locals alike, who visit the many
wineries, tasting rooms and wine bars in the area. In the five AVAs, wine tasters will find a nice
range of wine styles amongst the Burgundian, Rhone and Bordeaux varietals that are produced.
In the more northern region, cool climate Burgundian varietals reign, such as Pinot Noir and
Chardonnay, due to the maritime influence. This ensures a long temperate growing season which
the Burgundian varietals crave. With ample amount of sunlight, the grapes ripen very slowly
perfect for producing terroir driven wines with pure varietal characteristics. In the southern region,
there is more of a diurnal shift with warmer nights and cooler days. This area sees less fog and has
different soil types than what is found closer to the coast. The Bordeaux and Rhine varieties flourish
in this warmer climate and the sandy soils with limestone and chalk impart a wonderfully desirable
minerality in the wines.
The wineries in Santa Barbara County boast a concentration of incredibly passionate and talented
winemakers; join them year round at their many events, celebrations and festivals, as well as in
their tasting rooms.

A Walk Around Tasting is

a combination of a tour and a
tasting. Your host brings along
several bottles of wine on your
tour, and may take you to a
garden area of the winery to pour
the first round. Then you move to
another place within the winery
to sample the next wine. This
experience continues until all the
wines are tasted.

Barrel Tasting

Sit Down Tasting

A Sit Down Tasting usually
requires an appointment, and
there may be a slightly higher
fee than a wine bar fee. Seated in
an elegant room, you are poured
several wines by your winery
host. Expect your host to describe
the unique characteristics of each
wine and how it was made.

The most common tasting

experience is a Wine Bar Tasting.
You step up to the bar where
typically a list of wines being
poured is displayed. Expect to
pay a tasting fee between $10$40. Some tasting bars will offer
you the option to taste a library
or reserve wine. Exercising this
option increases the fee, but will
allow you to taste very unique,
old or rare wines.

Wine Bar Tasting

Another popular tasting

experience that can be part of a
tour or a Walk Around is a Barrel
Tasting. Your guide takes a wine
thief, a special siphon placed
into a hole in the top of a barrel
to extract tasting samples of a
maturing wine. The sample allows
you to taste what the wine is like
in the middle of developing its
full potential.
Why make an appointment?
Some wineries are so small
that they need to know when you
are coming so someone will be
there to greet you. Others have
sit-down tastings that start and
end at specific times. Its always
a good idea to schedule your
appointments well in advance.

Costa de Oro Tasting Room & Marketplace is located right off
of Highway 101 in Santa Maria. This site pays tribute to the history
behind Costa De Oroit was the strawberry stand for Gold Coast
Farms, the parent company of Costa De Oro, which has been farming
Santa Maria since 1978. Gold Coast Vineyard was planted to 20 acres
of Pinot Noir and 10 acres of Chardonnay in 1989, and these grapes
were sold to the areas best wineriesincluding Au Bon Climat. Gary
Burk, Costa de Oro Co-Owner and Winemaker, was fortunate to work
in the winery with Jim Clendenen from 1994-2002, and during this
time he began to make his own wine. Gary started with just one barrel
of Chardonnay and one barrel of Pinot Noir.
Today, Costa de Oro produces over 6000 cases featuring
Chardonnay & Pinot Noir from the estate Gold Coast Vineyard.
The best place to experience the wines is at the Tasting Room and
Marketplace, where guests can taste five wines for only $10. In
addition to regular tasting room hours (normally 11:00 a.m. to 6:00
p.m. daily), each Friday evening, Costa de Oro hosts Friday Night
Wine Downs featuring live music from local musicians and $12
dinner plates prepared by Chef Rick! Another facet to the Costa de
Oro portfolio is their Wine on Tap. Kegged wine, wine stored and
shipped inside five gallon kegs instead of bottles, has been gaining

popularity throughout the past several years. Costa de Oro started

kegging wine for high-end accounts, like Roys Hawaii. Now these
wines, a white and a red are available in the tasting room by the
glass and by the growler (these can be refilled). Costa de Oro Wine
Club members receive discounts on keg wines, bottled wines and
complimentary tastings.

Martian Ranch is the creation of Massachusetts native Nan

Helgeland, who found her inspiration in the world-class vineyards
and wines of Santa Barbara County. After years of searching for
the perfect property, she purchased this 102-acre parcel on Alisos
Canyon Road in 2007, and named it Martian Ranchthe combined
nickname of her two adult sons: Martin and Ian.
Today, Martian Ranch & Vineyard is a Demeter certified,
biodynamically farmed estate winery, with twenty acres of vines
planted to ten different grape varieties, each perfectly suited to the
climate of the ranch. The vineyards were planted in 2008 under
the guidance of biodynamic consultant Philippe Armenier, with the
first estate vintage in 2011. Martian Ranch is known for carefully
farmed, vibrant and lower-alcohol wines. Eric Bolton (formerly
Martian Assistant Winemaker) is now at the helm as Winemaker.
Estate varieties are Albario, Grenache Blanc, Viognier, Clairette,
Gamay Noir, Mourvdre, Grenache Noir, Syrah, Cabernet Franc and
Tempranilloabout two acres planted of each.
Biodynamics, which takes organic farming to the next level,
strives to create a balanced ecosystem while focusing on the health
and fertility of the soil. Lunar, solar and cosmic rhythms are followed
for all farming practices, which create an optimum environment for
the vines. Each part of the growing process revolves around four
elements: root, leaf, flower and fruit. Together, these elements create
the highest expression of harvest. While these farming methods may
be more labor intensive, the quality shows in each bottle, carefully
crafted between the earth and the cosmos.

The tasting room opened in October 2014 and offers a wide

selection of estate wines. Each wine is named after a celestial
notion, from the Stellar Viognier to Local Group Grenache Noir and
Mothership Grenache Blanc.
Martian Ranch & Vineyard is featured in the New York Times,
SF Chronicle and Jon Bonns book, The New California Wine.
Experimental and eclectic, the estate is dedicated to the journey,
from sky to ground to grape to barrel to bottle and straight into
your glass.

Foxen Canyon
The Foxen Canyon Wine Trail A Road of Definition

Every wine region has that one specific place, an area that clearly
defines the whole of the region in terms of how it best expresses and
interprets the wine. In Santa Barbara County that wine region is Foxen
Canyon. The Foxen Canyon Wine Trail is home to 15 tasting rooms
along its languid path, all of which are flanked by row upon row of
vineyards, which is one of the reasons people flock here, to get the full
wine country experience.
But unlike other wine trails, Foxen Canyon is still agriculture
driven. You wont find any stores, gas stations, restaurants or
shopping. What you will find are bucolic lazy roads which undulate
into flat valleys and ascends to hilltops where the views of open
land, roaming cattle, quail and turkey vultures, verdant vineyards,
mature oak trees and blue skies beckon; a postcard to the past of what
California used to be like. The beans and barley plantings of older
times have been replaced by grapevines but there are still pockets of
bell peppers and other row crops along this country road.
The Foxen Canyon area seems unremarkable in terms of its
diversity however this 30 mile long road shows various micoclimates and topography along the way, and there is a stunning array
represented here. The multitude of wineries have planted a bevy of
ountry
grapes including Grenache, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Syrah, Cabernet

Sauvignon and Viognier.

The south of the trail, closer to the tasting room hotbed of Los
Olivos, is dominated by full bodied Rhone style wines where the
inland climate is much warmer and where you will find Syrah,
Grenache and Viognier and some of the first Santa Barbara plantings
of Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah in the early 1970s. In the northern
part of the canyon, leading towards Santa Maria, the Burgundian
styles are more readily available, where the cooler maritime influence
creates a climate perfect for Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. And often
you can see the clouds from the beach just ten miles away. This is
however, California, and that means a greater cornucopia of other
varietals such as Sauvignon Blanc, Negrette, Sylvaner, Sangiovese
and Cabernet Franc which can also be found on the tasting lists
showcasing the assortment of grapes that thrive here.
Most of the wineries have picnic areas; some large and open and
some small and secluded you just need to take your pick. When
visiting the trail its advisable to bring water with you and food as
there are no restaurants and many of the wineries are spread out. By
visiting this unique wine trail youll get in touch with the exceptional
wines of Santa Barbara and at the same time, step back into historic
California.

his Gravel Pit Vineyard in Santa Maria. There is also a Cabernet,
a Petit Verdot, and a crisp Sauvignon Blanc, simply named

Andrew Murray fell in love with the classic Rhne varietals,

specifically Syrah and Viognier, in the late 1980s as he traveled
through Frances Rhne Valley. At the time, he was enrolled at UC
Berkeley studying paleontology, but when sampling the wines
in France, there was a shift in his thinking. Capitalizing on this
newfound enthusiasm for wine, he decided to do an internship in
Australia at a winery, focusing on the production of Shiraz. When
Andrew returned to the US, he earned himself a Bachelors Degree
in Viticulture and Enology from UC Davis, and then founded
his eponymous Los Olivos winery and vineyarddedicated
exclusively to his favored Rhne-style wines. Today, Andrew
Murray Vineyards is synonymous with some of the states premier
Rhne wines, from sellout vineyard designated Syrahs to wildly
popular blends!
In January of 2014, Andrew expanded his brand when he
opened his new winery and visitor center in the former Curtis
Winery location. He also took over the management of Curtis
Estates 100+ acres of premium wine grapes. This opportunity fully
realized his dream to be back on Foxen Canyon Road, growing
Rhnes again.

focus will remain primarily as a source for other wineries, you can
experience their Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Grenache and Syrah in
their newly opened and inviting Los Olivos tasting room.
Bien Nacido has a commitment to quality and people. The
vineyard, planted in 1973 by the Miller family focuses primarily
on Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Syrah. In addition to growing
grapes, this 5th generation farming family also grows blueberries,
avocados (100 acres) and lemons. The combination of farming
both grapes and produce enables the family to keep their workers
employed all year round; being part of and supporting the
community is of utmost importance. Their commitment to people
and environmental awareness practices is further demonstrated by
being a SIP certified vineyard (to learn more about SIP Certified
Vineyards, visit: www.sipcertified.org.

Taste the Difference

Bien Nacido introduced their first wine in 2005 and then
the 2007 vintage saw the initial commercial release, offered to
high end restaurants and selected wine shops. Now you can
experience the Bien Nacido difference in their tasting room,
opened over Labor Day in 2015. The tasting menu currently
offers seven varietals, which includes the highly acclaimed 2012
Bien Nacido Syrah (96 points Antonio Galloni, and included in
A recent edition of Wine & Spirits Magazines Top Best U.S.
Syrahs), as well as the 2013 Bien Nacido and 2013 Solomon
Hills Chardonnay (both receiving 95 points by Antonio Galloni).
The 2012 Bien Nacido Chardonnay received a 96 score, truly a
consistent history of quality.
Bien Nacido and Solomon Vineyards will remain primarily
focused on their base, selling the highest quality grapes possible to
a selected group of Californias premier wineries. Dont miss the
opportunity to stop by their tasting room to see why this winery
has garnered awards and recognition over the last 40 years, and to
take home a bottle or two for your own cellar.

the tasting room manager says, We have high quality, approachable

wines for any level of wine enthusiast to enjoy in a relaxed and
friendly atmosphere.

A Passion for Pinot Noir

Brian Loring plainly states, my obsession is Pinot Noir,
and unabashedly describes himself as a Pinot freak. His sister,
Kimberly, is co-owner and co-winemaker, and shares his passion for
Pinot. Pouring a variety of highly rated Pinots in their tasting room
on Highway 246 in Buellton, the Lorings strive to bring their love
of Pinots to their guests. Sourcing grapes from twelve distinctive
vineyards throughout Californiastretching from the Sonoma
Coast to Santa Barbarathey produce Pinots reflective of each
vineyards individual terroir, microclimate and specific clones. Of
the diverse range of Pinots offered, Brian states, It would be boring
if everything we made tasted the same.

Taste the Difference

Begin your tasting at the counter in the tasting room, relax in
the lounge area, or sit on the front patio. The tasting room team
will guide you through your choice of the Regular Tasting Flight or
the Reserve Single Vineyard Flight. Taste and compare the diversity
between different AVAs from Northern California through the
Central Coast. All wines currently poured have received impressive
ratings from highly respected wine publications; as April Pharoah

Wine and ArtisanCookie Pairing Experience

Loring and Mela Foods have designed a special Artisan
Cookie Pairing Experience to enjoy with either wine flight. These
excellently handcrafted, special cookies perfectly complement the
stunning collection of Loring wines. The cookie flight changes
frequently, this is an example of what you might find: lemon
pistachio, cherry shortbread, manchego and toasted walnut biscuit,
goat Gouda biscuit and chocolate sea salt caramel cookie.

Wine ClubExclusives
Join the wine club to insure shipments of Loring wines and to
receive exclusive benefits. In addition to discounts, tastings and
the annual pick up party, depending on the wine club level chosen,
benefits may also consist of barrel tastings, vineyard tours, blending
event, a vineyard picnic lunch and other events with Winemakers
Brian and Kimberly Loring.

The interesting thing about this story is that back in 1999 and 2000

Casa Cassara Winery & Vineyards, located in the heart of the

Sta. Rita Hills appellation is a true family affair. With the first vines
planted in 1986, the hilltop 35 acre estate specializing in Pinot
Noir, has just added some cool climate Syrah and Grenache. Sitting
on the eastern edge of the Sta. Rita Hills at 800-foot elevation, the
climate offers the perfect backdrop for award winning Pinot Noir.
Dan Cassara the owner has some exciting news, winemaker
Kyle Knapp has been offered the position of head winemaker at
one of Lompocs premier wineries and though it saddens them to
see him go, they understand that this is an offer that he cannot
pass up and wish him all of the best, as far as Dan and Bridget are
concerned Kyle, Savanna, Milo and Andi along with Nancy and JC
are family and family is forever. Now on to the news about the new
winemaker, with Kyles help Dan was able to procure the services of
Mikael Sigouin of Kaena Wine, Mikael is well known in California

Lions Peak Vineyards

Winemaker, Owner and Sommelier of Lions Peak Vineyards,
Jennifer Arant, has created a portfolio of small lot, hand-crafted
Bordeaux and Rhne wines. A native Texan and former professional
ASID interior designer, Arant would be the first to tell you how
a trip to Paso Robles on Valentines Day in 1991 changed her life
forever. Being an avid storyteller, she will entertain you with her
early years of living at Lions Peaks 120 acre vineyard to having the
first downtown tasting room in Paso Robles. It was truly a time
before Paso Robles wines became highly sought after and were
recognized by the Wine Enthusiast as being wines from the best
growing region in California.
Her meeting with Robert Lawrence Balzer, wine critic for the
LA Times for 35 years and wine judge, educated her to a deeper
understanding of wine. Balzer, who has walked with the giants
of the early California and European wine industry, recognized
that Arant had a palate for winemaking, and became her mentor.
Blazer opened doors in Europe to be a guest at Mouton Rothschild,
Romanee Conti, Chateaux Margaux, Chateaux Petrus, Taittinger,
Perrier Jouet, and many other famous wineries for tastings
and dinners. This experience of a lifetime introduced her to
international wines, and she ultimately opened Lions Peak Wine
Cellars in Cambriawhich sold international wines and gave her
the passion to become a Sommelier.
From the nurturing of her 40 year old vines at Lions Peak
Vineyard to producing ultra-premium grapes, ArantMon-Fri.
recognizes
12-7
that winemaking is an art form which begins in the Sat-Sun
vineyard.11-7
She
combines her artistic design background and creativity to the label
design of each wine, and will be happy to tell you the story about
each wine that is special to her. Each label tells a story, and such
it is with the rich and fruit forward BFF (Best Friends Forever)
Bordeaux blend, that is dedicated to her best friends, and Lulu, a
white wine blend that is named after her daughter. On the serious
side, you will hear firsthand about Lions Peak Ultra-Premium
Bordeaux Cabernet Sauvignon, Meritages and GSM blends.
Having the opportunity to own a vineyard and produce wine
has allowed me to be a very special part of nature in my lifetime,
says Arant. Each year I see the vine produce another wonderful
vintage. How fortunate we are to experience the wine from these
40+ year old Cabernet Sauvignon vines from our Lions Peak
Estate. The warm Mediterranean climate on the east side of Paso
Robles offers the optimum growing environment for Lions Peaks
Bordeaux wines. Warm days and cool nights have played the role
in producing multi-award winning Best of Class and Gold Medal
wines at Lions Peak from their Cabernet Franc, Roaring Lion, Estate
Cabernet Sauvignon and Lionnesse.
Their belief is that it is important to educate tasters about their
wines in a welcoming setting. Lions Peak welcomes everyone to
stop in for a tasting.
