Initiatives for next year

Keeping up and increase communication through Facebook and our newsletter

Advertise awards and encourage people to apply

Spanish and Portuguese for award
Send call for secretary and liaison tasked with building relationships with other SIGS and
organizations in the US and Latin America
Find ways to collaborate with other SIGS
Find ways to attract scholars from Central America and the Caribbean, currently
underrepresented in the SIG
Feature work by people in the SIG on Facebook, the website and the newsletter
Communicate with Palgrave Macmillan about book series proposal and send a call for
nominations for editors
Martina Arnal and Lucrecia Santibez mentioned that more collaboration is needed
between CIES and organizations in Latin America. One idea was to funnel funds for
people who are coming from far or are less likely to get funds. A short paper award, like
policy paper or report was also suggested to attract researchers and practitioners
working for development agencies. Yesly Contreras suggested supporting them by
providing guidance on submitting abstracts or finding sources of funding.
The Board suggested that people who are doing great work in LA can be featured in the
newsletter or the Facebook page. Members are encouraged to send a blurb about the
work they are doing to be featured in the newsletter.
Carlos Ornelas and Mark Ginsburg expressed interest in using LASIG funds to sponsor
Cuban scholars to present in Atlanta. LASIG has invited scholars to present in previous
years. Mark Ginsburg and the LASIG Board will work together to determine interest,
funding and possible collaborations.
Carlos Ornelas reminded the membership about the upcoming Mexican fiesta, now a
tradition at CIES

Meeting Adjourned.
