A ball is thrown at an inclined wall.

Just before the impact on the wall, the ball has a

height of 1.2 m and a velocity v 0 that is horizontal with a magnitude of 15 m/s. The
coefficient of restitution between the ball and the wall is 0.9 and there is no friction
between the ball and the wall. At what distance d from the foot of the wall does the
ball land after bouncing off from the wall.

Solution:
This is the problem on oblique central impact. Consider an ortogonal cartesian t-n coordinate axis with n axis along the
line of impact.

Let the vnb and vtb be t and n components just before the impact and vna and vta be the components just after the impact.
From the data, vnb = 15 sin 60o m/s and vtb = 15 cos 60o m/s. From the theory of oblique central impact, we have
vtb = vta = 15 cos 60o m/s
(vna 0)
= e = 0.9
(vnb 0)

From the second equation, we get vna = 0.9 15 sin 60o m/s.
Let us express the velocity just after the impact in horizontal and vertical x-y coordianate system.

y
x

vxa = vta cos 60o vna sin 60o = 6.375 m/s and
vya = vta sin 60o + vna cos 60o = 12.34 m/s
From this point onwards it follows a projectile motion under the influence of gravity. If we take g = 9.81 m/s2 , the origin
of the x-y coordinate to be at point C, and t = 0 just after the impact, then the equations of the projectile motion are
x = (0.693 6.375t) m
y = (4.905t2 + 12.341t + 1.2) m

[ 6 marks]

Solving for y = 0 in the above equation gives a quadratic equation and the appropriate solution indicating the time of hit
is t = 2.61 s. At this time x has a value of 15.94 m which is also the distance d.

The two 150 mm radius wheels roll without slipping on the horizontal surface. Knowing that the distance AD is 125 mm, the distance BE is 100 mm, and D has a velocity of
150 mm/s to the right, determine the velocity of point E. Note that AD is vertical and
BE is horizontal. Do not use the concept of instantaneous center explicitly.

Let the point of contact of the left wheel with the ground be F and that of the right wheel
be G. Let 1 , 2 and 3 be the angular velocities of the planar motion of left wheel, rod
AB, and right wheel respectively.
We have
150
v F = v D + 1 k
j
v F is zero, v D = 150i mm/s and we can solve for 1 as 1 rad/s.
Similarly,
125
v A = v D + 1 k
j = 275i mm/s
For link AB, we have

[ 6 marks]

v B = v A + 2 k ( 3502 1252i 125

j) = (125.02 + 275.0)i + 326.9172
For wheel 3, we have

[ 6 marks]

(100i + 150
v B = v G + 3 k
j) = 3 (150i 100
j)
Equating the two expressions for v B we get the solutions 2 = 0.75 rad/s and 3 =
2.46 rad/s. Finally, we have
150
v E = v G + 3 k
j = 369.08i mm/s

Two slots have been cut in plate F G and the plate has been placed so that the slots
fit two fixed pins A and B. Knowing that at the instant shown the angular velocity of crank
DE is 6 rad/s clockwise, determine (a) the velocity of point F , (b) the velocity of point G.
Use of the concept of instantaneous center is suggested.

B

Let C be the point of intersection of lines from A and B with each of them perpendicular to the respective slots. It is clear that
if we take the plate as the reference and the ground as the moving object, then C is the instantaneous center of rotation of the
ground with respect to the plate. It can be shown that C is also instantaneous center of rotation of the plate with respect to
the ground. From geometry,
r C/F = 120
j + 120i + 360i 360 tan 30o
j
= 480i 87.84
j
Intersection of line along r C/F and passing through F with a horizontal line passing through E is the instantaneous
center of rotation of link F E whicj be called as K. From analytical geometry,
rK/F = +

160
480i 160
j = +874.25i 160
j
87.84

Since, angular velocity of DE is given, we have

v E = 6 72i = 432i mm/s
If 1 is the angular velocity of link EF , then based on location of K,
1 =

432
rad/s = 0.49 rad/s
874.25

From r K/F and 1 , we can write

v F = 874.25 0.49
j + 160 0.49i = (428.38
j + 78.4i)mm/s

[ 8 marks]

From r C/F we get angular velocity of plate 2 as

2 =

428.38
78.4
=
= 0.892 rad/s

r G/C = 220
j + 520i 360i + 360 tan 30o
j
= 160i + 427.84
j
v G/C = vG = (160 0.892
j + 427.84 0.892i)mm/s = (142.72
j + 381.63i)mm/s
