COURSE DESCRIPTION
The city is an expression of human culture and tradition. Right from the Indus valley
civilization a city had born with careful planning, urban form and architecture respecting the
natural setting. Urban design always served as a facilitator or a mediator between the
societal and natural order. Urban design with its multitude dimensions spread across the
socio cultural economic and physical manifestation of human life. At present the societies
have become more and more complex and heterogeneous with rapid changes and demands
of growth; the city has been increasingly under pressure. The profession of planning and the
act of individual building; architecture lacks the cohesive character of urban form and space
that existed before. This gap needs to be bridged and mediated with urban design. This has
relevance especially in Indian cities as they are developing and even the small towns are
aspiring to become large towns and mega cities.
The main objective of the course is to broaden up the vision of architecture; reading the
various parts/components of a city and understanding the city as a macrocosm of these
parts making a unified whole. To impart knowledge and understanding of urban design
concepts and the methodology for arriving at urban design solutions and formulating
policies
