1. (a) State and prove addition theorem of probability.


(b) Two cards are selected at random from 10 cards numbered 1 to 10.

Find the

probability that the sum is odd if (i) the two cards are drawn together (ii) the two cards
are drawn one after the other without replacement. (iii) the two cards are drawn one after
the other with replacement.

3. (a) Out of 800 families with 5 children each how many would you expect to have

(b) The marks obtained in mathematics by 1000 students is normally
distributed with mean 78% and standard deviation 11%. Determine
i) how many students got marks above 90%
ii) what was highest mark obtained by the lowest 10%
iii) with in what limits the middle of 90% students lie
4. (a) The mean voltage of a battery is 15 and standard deviation is 0.2. Find the probability
that four such batteries connected in series will have a combined voltage of 60.8 or more
volts.
(b) The mean of certain normal population is equal to standard error of the mean of
samples of 64 from that distribution. Find the probability that the mean of the sample size
36 will be negative.

5. (a) Find the degree of confidence to assert that the average salary of school teachers is
between Rs.272 and Rs.302. If a random sample of 100 such teachers revealed a mean
salary of Rs.287 with standard deviation of Rs.48.

(b) For an KSB insurance company, 84 insurance claims for accident cars out of a
random sample of 200 such claims, claim amount exceeded Rs.100000. Construct 95%
confidence interval for the true proportion of insurance claims field against the KSB
company which exceeded Rs.100000.
8. (a)Assume that there is only one counter in a supermarket. Customer arrive at an average
rate of 15 per hour. Assume that arrivals are poission distributions and length of service by
the counter clerk has an exponential distribution . Determine the average rate at which the
clerk should work in order that the probability that the customer will not wait longer than
12 minutes is 0.90.

cms. Find how many students height lie between 150cms and 170 cms if there are 100
students in the class.
4. (a) Find mean and standard deviation of sampling distribution of variances for the
population 2,3,4,5 by drawing samples of size two without replacement.
(b) If the mean of breaking strength of copper wire is 575 lbs with a standard deviation
of 8,3lbs. How large a sample must be used in order that there will be one chance in 100
that the mean breaking strength of the sample is less than 572 lbs.
5. (a) Find the degree of confidence to assert that the average salary of school teachers is
between Rs.272 and Rs.302. If a random sample of 100 such teachers revealed a mean

certain nutruious food. If 64 mice fed on this diet have an average lifespan of 38 months
and standard deviation of 5.8 months, is there any reason to believe that average lifespan
is less than 40 months.
(b) A random sample of 40 geysers produced by company A have a mean lifetime(mlt) of 647 hours of continuous use with a s.d. of 27hours, while a sample 40
produced by another company B have mlt of 638 hours with s.d 31 hours. Does this
substantiate the claim of company A that their geysers are superior to those produced
by company B at 0.05 and 0.01 L.O.S
7. (a) If in a random sample of 600 cars making a right turn at a certain traffic junction 157
drove into wrong lane, test whether actually 30% of all drivers make this mistake or not
at this given junction use(i) 0.05 (ii) 0.01 level of significance.
(b) If 57 out of 150 patients suffering with certain disease are cured by allopathy and 33
out of 100 patients with same disease are cured by homeopathy, is there reason to
believe that allopathy is better than homeopathy at 0.05 level of significance.
8. Customer arrive at a one man barber shop with a mean inter arrival time of 12minutes,
following a Poisson process. On an average customers spend 10 minutes in the barbers
chair. Find the following (a) The Average number of customer in the shop and the
queue (b) The percentage of time a customer can walk straight into the barbers chair
having to wait(c) How much time a customer can expect to spend in the barbers shop.

true average monthly commission being in the interval of Rs.3500 to Rs.4000.

(a) It has previously been recorded that the average depth of ocean at a particular region
is 67.4 fathoms. Is there reason to believe this at 0.01 Level of significance if the reading
at 40 random location in that particular region showed a mean of 69.3 with s.d. of 5.4
fathoms.
(b) To test the claim that the men are taller than women, a survey was conducted

(a) Out of 9 mice, suffering from a disease, 5 mice were treated with a new serum while

4. (a) A random sample of size 25 from a normal distribution has the mean 47.5 and the
standard deviation 8.4. Does this information tend to support or refuse the claim that the
mean of the population in 42.1?
(b) What is the effect on standard error if a sample is taken from an infinite population of
size is increased from 400 to 900.
5. The mean mark in mathematics in common test will vary from year to year. If this
variation of the mean mark is expressed subjectively by a normal distribution with mean

has an annual average use of 126.9 hours with standard deviation 8.4 hours. Does this

0.05 level of significance?
(b) A company claims that alloying reduces resistance of electric wire by more than
0.050 ohm. To test this claim sample of standard wire and alloyed wire are tested

the time between registrations follows an exponential distribution find (a) the average
number of registrations per year (b) the probability that number registration will occur in
any one day (c) The probability of making 50 registrations by end of next 3 hours given
that 40 registrations were made during last 2 hours.
