SING TO THE DAWN

CHAPTER 3

Dawan won the scholarship and everyone is happy for her except her brother, Kwai. She

has mixed feelings about the news. Kwai is absent in the crowd that congratulate Dawan.
Dawan tries to talk to Kwai but he avoids her. She realizes about Kwais disappointment.
On her way back from school, the monks greet her cheerfully.
As Dawan approaches home, she hears her mother is singing tunelessly to the baby and her

grandmother is feeding the chickens while her father is repairing the chicken coop.
Dawan asks her grandmother about Kwai who is nowhere to be seen in the house.
In the afternoon, Dawan finally talks about the scholarship with her family. She comes up

with an appeal so that her father would allow her to pursue her studies in the city.
Her father accuses her for robbing Kwais opportunity and walks away angrily. The same

goes to her mother who shows regret.

On the other hand, her grandmother shows support to her. She is willing to accompany
Dawan to walk for 3km to Dawans cousins house, Noi. She used to live in the city before

and her grandmother believes Noi could convince her father to let Dawan go to the city.
After few steps away from the house, Dawans mother offers herself to accompany Dawan
instead.
