allow our memories to force our children to participate in things in
which they experience little or no success or to stop our children
from enjoying something we did not enjoy.
Memory-making helps us see the world through our children’s
eyes because we are connecting with them on their level. It also
allows us to play and enjoy life like a child again. One of the best
feelings in the world is the joy that lingers after you have spent time
with your kids laughing, experiencing something new, taking on a
challenge together or simply being a family. But memory-making
plays a role in their lives that is much more important than most of
us ever realize.
The best times for memory-making are the elementary years.
Kids at this age can be described as “old enough to remember and
young enough to enjoy.” They are able to form lasting memories
about their experiences, what happened, how they felt and who
was there. Younger elementary-aged children enjoy life with aban-
donment that really enables great memory-making. With a little
encouragement and patience even a child that is becoming self-
conscience about their appearance and peer-acceptance will even-
tually throw themselves into enjoying the activities, the moments
and the fun of these years.
The teenage years are filled with an almost overwhelming amount
of changes, emotions and challenges. The positive memories we
have built with our children during the elementary years now play a
vital role in maintaining a healthy relationship with our teenagers.
Some of these early activities may transition into traditions which
helps keep a family bound together. Other memories stand as a
testimony to our teens that even during these tumultuous years, they

Pet Set Pet Care Tip Keeping Your Dog Safe on Your Vacation
Dog DNA Tests
By Dixie Popham - Owner, Pet Set Grooming • 3313
Hwy. 5 Across from Publix • 770-949-0579
Anyone who has had a mixed breed dog has likely
wondered: Just what type of dog do I have?
Now, it may be possible to answer that question. Companies
specializing in dog DNA testing are enticing owners who are curious
about their mutt’s background. Owners may also decide to test so
they can take the information to their veterinarians to discuss potential
health issues about their dog’s breeds.
Priced from $60 and up, the tests are available online and at
many pet supply retail stores. All of the kits test DNA via a cheek swab
sampling, except for the most expensive, Mars Veterinary’s Wisdom Being able to take a vacation is a treat for most people. It is

need it for proof of vaccination. In order for a pet to travel by plane a
recent update in their vaccinations is needed upon boarding. Having
this certification performed no more than two weeks before traveling
is needed if you are taking your pet out of the country.
Other ways to ensure your dogs’ health and well being on a
vacation trip is to make sure that you travel safe. Do not leave your
pet in the back of a pick-up truck during the trip as he can be injured
if you need to stop suddenly, or if you get into an accident. Also, a
dog can jump out of the back of the truck if they are left in the back
for too long. Keeping your pet in the back seat of a car is a good
idea, but make sure that your pooch has an empty stomach before
you leave. Feeding your pet just before, or during the trip can lead
to car sickness.
A bored dog can become a distraction for a driver, making him
rather dangerous to have in the car. It is very important to keep your
dog well entertained during the trip. Stopping every so often to stretch
your own legs, as well as to let your bridled buddy out to go to the
bathroom, can give you an excuse to play a game with your pooch
and make the remainder of his trip as enthusiastic as possible.
If your dog does not particularly care for car rides, you may need
to have dog crates for your pet to stay in while on the road. This will
make him a little less of a danger to himself, and to his owners. Make
sure that you buckle in the crate to ensure that it does not slide in the
vehicle, or can be thrown free of the vehicle in an accident. There are
special seat belt attachments for cars and mini-vans that work for this
purpose. It is much safer to have your pooch tied in then to be free
in the vehicle, where he can be thrown about and receive serious
injuries. Simply being prepared for everything that may come can
help you keep your pet safe and happy on your vacation.

Understanding Academic Errors
By Rebecca S. Blakeman, Ph.D., Licensed Psychologist
- Adolescent Child Specialty Services, 3138 Golf Ridge
Blvd., Douglasville, 404-310-1161, blakers1@aol.com.
Even the best of students will make errors at times,
and struggling students make errors quite frequently. Understanding
the nature of the error is critical to understanding how to help the
child minimize errors in the future.
I often hear parents and teachers say that a student makes fre-
quent “careless” errors. But what exactly makes an error “careless,”
and what other type of errors may be occurring? Certainly careless
errors occur—though the name is misleading, because most students
do care if they make a mistake, and most students believe that they
are performing academic tasks accurately or to the best of their abil-
ity. An error can be considered ‘careless’ only if the student has
previously demonstrated mastery of the skill. In order to have shown
mastery of a skill, students must have been able to perform the skill
repeatedly and accurately, such that a mistake is extremely unusual.
For example, a 6th grade student who has always done well in math,
but who inadvertently calculated 3 + 4 to equal 8 in the midst of a
complex multiplication problem can be said to have made a careless
mistake. Another common type of careless mistake is adding, when
the problem required subtraction.
On the other hand, there are some errors that students make that
should not be considered ‘careless’ errors. It appears that many
parents and teachers want to consider an error as ‘careless’ because
(1) the child has been ‘taught’ the skill and (2) they believe the child
‘should’ know the skill. However, if the student consistently makes
the same mistake, even if it appears to be on a ‘simple’ task that
should have been well learned, the mistake should not be consid-
ered ‘careless.’ For example, I often see students struggle with sub-
traction when they must ‘borrow’ from another number; rather than
understanding the concept of ‘borrowing,’ they simple subtract the
smaller number from the larger number, regardless of placement in
the problem (e.g., 23-17 = 14 instead of 23-17 = 6). Regardless
of what grade the student is, if this is a consistent error, it is a pro-
cedural or learning error and indicates that the student has failed to
learn the proper method for solving the problem; this should not be
considered a careless error.
If your child seems to make frequent ‘careless’ errors, take a closer
look. Collect several samples of work and make a list of the types
of mistakes made. For math, this may include forgetting to check
to see if the problem required addition/subtraction/etc., incorrect
addition/subtraction/multiplication/division, incorrect addition/sub-
traction, etc. with fractions, improper decimal placement, etc. For
writing, this may include failing to capitalize the first word in each
sentence, forgetting to capitalize the names of people, forgetting to
use punctuation at the end of the sentence, ending all sentences with
a period (even when the sentence was a question), using commas
inappropriately, misspelling words, etc. If there is a consistent pattern
to the errors, they are likely not ‘careless,’ but rather indicative of a
gap in learning. Take advantage of the summer months to re-teach
the skills that have not been properly mastered yet.

Local resident reaches 30 year milestone as
Directress of Montessori school
The Montessori School of Douglas County was originally opened
by a group of parents in 1976, to offer their children the Montessori
approach to education in our community and we continue that tradi-
tion today. In 1980, Lupe Villegas became Directress of the school
and is trained to teach children from age 2.5 to 7th grade according
to the Montessori Method.
In 1976, the school started with one primary class. They presently
enroll children from 18 months to 10 years, with two toddler, three
primary, and one lower-elementary class. Additionally, they offer be-
fore and after school care for working parents.
“Montessori” is the name given to the discoveries and education-
al methods devised by Dr. Maria Montessori. Dr. Montessori, Italy’s
first woman physician in the early 1900’s, used her scientific training
to observe how children learn. She discovered that children learn
in different ways at different ages. The Montessori classroom is a
prepared environment in which the child develops a positive attitude
toward school, self confidence, a sense of order, curiosity, habits of
self direction, persistence, the ability to make decisions, and a sense
of caring and responsibility toward others in the class, school, and
community.
The Montessori Elementary program continues building upon the
preschool experience. The elementary-aged child is encouraged at
all times to take responsibility for his actions. He thereby develops a
strong sense of independence, personal awareness, and respect for
himself and his society.
Their goal is to offer a rich, warm, and caring community environ-
ment for the children. They are committed to the values underlying
the Montessori approach to child development. They are committed
to ongoing study in order to better support the natural and total de-
velopment of each child.
The Montessori School of Douglas County is located at 8014
Duralee Lane in Douglasville. Please call 770-949-3115 for more

B) I don’t have the money. The truth is you don’t need money
Granite to get started becoming organized. In fact, the normal response to
Countertops becoming organized is to go out and purchase a lot of organizing
from supplies without knowing exactly what you need and then guess what
$18.99/ft2 happens? Your supplies just create more clutter. Pretty boxes and con-
installed tainers are useless until you take that first step of purging the things you
no longer need or love. Once you have purged take a look around

C) Getting organized takes to long. In just five minutes you can
start to get organized. Example: in less than five minutes you can get

situation. Make your decisions quickly. Example: when you pick up
that flashlight that has been in the drawer for the past five years broken
- toss it. If you haven’t fixed it by now you aren’t likely to do it in the
future.
D) It’s too overwhelming. Take baby steps. Break your organizing
project into small “bite sized” pieces. Don’t try organizing the whole
closet at once. Do your shoes and purses today and another section
tomorrow. Set a timer for fifteen minutes and then stop and come back
later and work for fifteen more minutes.
E) I can’t get rid of anything. Ask yourself - Why I am I having
trouble getting rid of this item? A lot of time we allow our emotions
to cause us to hold onto things long after they have outlived their
usefulness. I encourage my clients to take pictures of items that they
are keeping for sentimental reasons only, because what we are really
attached to is the “warm fuzzy” feeling we get when we see the item
(not the item itself). You will get that same feeling when you look at the
picture. Once you separate the item from the memories associated
with them it’s easier to get rid of the item. Remind yourself that get-
ting rid of the item will not get rid of the memory, you will always have
those. It is so freeing to let go of things you are only keeping because
of a memory.
If you have a lot of items, say a collection that you know is too much
stuff in one place, pack up part of them and rotate them so you only
display a small amount at once.

Douglas County celebrates the hydrangea during the month of June
through a local festival that will include garden tours, garden parties,
flower show, an arts and crafts bazaar and in honor of Penny McHenry,
a true hydrangea advocate and founder of the American Hydrangea
Society; you will see hydrangeas everywhere from mailboxes to garden
hats. The third Annual Penny McHenry Hydrangea Festival is soon to
arrive June 4th through 6th.
While there are approximately 23 species of Hydrangea, only five
are widely cultivated in the U.S. The most popular species is Hydrangea
macrophylla, which is commonly known as bigleaf, French, garden or
florist’s hydrangea. This Japanese native is rated as hardy to USDA
cold-hardiness zone 6. It produces large inflorescences of white, pink
or blue flowers in early summer. Both mophead and lacecap cultivars
fall in this classification.
Panicle hydrangea (H. paniculata) is the most cold hardy member of
the genus. It can be reliably grown in USDA cold-hardiness zones 4 to
7. Native to Asia, it grows 10 to 15 feet tall. Large creamy-white flow-
ers, which are borne in 6- to 18-inch long panicles, are produced in
mid-summer. As flowers mature, they may turn pink. Plants, particularly
those of the cultivar ‘Grandiflora’ (‘Pee Gee’), are sometime pruned
into a tree form and grown as a specimen plant.
The oakleaf hydrangea (H. quercifolia) is one of two Hydrangea
species that is native to the U.S. It is found growing primarily in moist
woodlands in the southeastern U.S. Plants generally grow 6 to 8 feet
in height, although a few cultivars with smaller and larger plant habit
are available. Large (4 to 12 inches in length) panicles of creamy white
flowers are produced in early summer. As flowers age, they often turn
a medium- to deep-rose color. Oakleaf hydrangea is the only mem-
ber of the genus to develop significant fall foliage color. Leaves turn
a deep mahogany-red and stay on the plant until late fall. Exfoliating
bark adds to winter interest. Oakleaf hydrangea is best suited used in
a mixed border or as a mass planting.
Smooth hydrangea (H. arborescens) is the other U.S. native. It is
found in the eastern U.S. from New York to Florida and west to Iowa
and Louisiana. In cultivation, plants usually reach about 5 feet in
height, with a similar or greater spread. The species is rated as hardy
from USDA Cold Hardiness Zones 4 to 9. Flowering occurs in early
to mid-summer. The most common cultivar, ‘Annabelle’, produces
rounded inflorescences that may reach up to a foot in diameter. Plants
found in the wild typically have a lacecap type inflorescence consisting
of a combination of a few large and many small flowers. At the peak
of flowering, smooth hydrangea flowers are a pure white. As they age,
they develop a pale green color. Smooth hydrangea is extremely strik-
ing in mass plantings.
While not as well-known as the previous four species, climbing hy-
drangea (H. anomala subsp. petiolaris) is becoming increasingly pop-
ular. Hardy from zones 4 to 7, climbing hydrangea is a true clinging
vine. While initially slow growing, the plant can eventually cover tall (up
to 80 feet) structures. White, lacecap type inflorescences are produced
in early- to mid-summer. Plants can be slow to flower, but patience is
rewarded by a spectacular floral display on established plants. The
stems of climbing hydrangea leave a residue that is very difficult to
remove. An alternative to planting climbing hydrangea on the side
of a building is to allow it to climb up a tall tree or to cascade over a
horizontal surface like a rock pile. Climbing hydrangea grows well in
shade, but can also tolerate a sunny location. The scientific name of
this plant is listed by some sources as H. petiolaris.

DECORATING TIPS
Trends from High Point Furniture Market
Karen Hartley is a local interior designer and
decorator. As owner of Interiors by Decorating Den,
she has been in business for 23 years. She can be
reached at 770-459-9096.
Having recently returned from the High Point Fur-
niture Market in North Carolina, I couldn’t wait to share with
you some of what we observed. This market seemed to be bet-
ter attended than recent shows and most of the furniture show-
rooms were busy and the reps enthusiastic! Here are a few of
our observations:
Colors - lots of blue with brown, lime green with brown, and
vivid palettes of orange, yellow, azalea pinks. The blues seemed
to have progressed to deeper sky tones. Navy leather has re-
turned. On the neutral side, lots of off-white, grey (from very
pale to charcoal), and pale tan to chocolate brown.
Fabrics - gone are the chenilles! Replacing them were lin-
ens, flannels, and textures. Suede and leather are still strong.
Deep, earthy textures – lots of fabrics that look like pebbles or
river rocks.
Patterns - yes, florals are coming back! We saw a Jacobean
and a very 70’s splashy floral in almost every upholstery show-
room – but usually just on the throw pillows or an accessory
chair. Upholstery prints remain subtle and subdued.
Trim - Flat braid on the hems of sofas, contrast colors on
welt cord on chairs, leather welt cord, and nail head trims on
many things. Pillows with no trim. Two-toned looks with band-
ing in second color of same fabric sometimes narrow, some-
times very wide!
Frame Styles on Upholstery - arms are smaller and boxy.
Many Chairs had higher backs. Sofas had lower backs. Details
on upholstery work were important- from the pleating to the
banding to the trim application. Many new pieces are smaller
in size and scale.
Sleeper sofas today now come with inflatable air mattresses
and memory foam tops. And, yes, they inflate automatically
when opened! Ottomans and benches were shown for every
spot from the usual pairing with a chair to under the cocktail or
as the cocktail to in front of the fireplace and at the foot of the
bed -many with storage space.
Recliners are looking less and less like recliners and more
like the other chairs in the room! Motorization is a must have
today. (For a few pennies more, go first class!)
Wicker and rattan are now being used for accessory pieces,
maybe a chair in the family room or a side chest in the bedroom
or foyer. It’s not just for the porch anymore! Of course, there is
lots of wonderful, imaginative furniture for outdoor living!
Furniture with conveniences built in- night stands with hid-
den compartments to plug in everything from the clock radio
to your cell phone charger; then one plug to the wall. Pieces
designed for specific functions, like the scrapbooking cabinet/
work-desk or the dressing table/jewelry cabinet complete with

PEST CONTROL TIPS
Keep Your Lawn Beautiful
Provided by Nelson Cruz – Cruz Pest Control, Inc., Georgia Pest
Control Association Member, 770-920-5549, cruzpestcontrol@com-
cast.net
Summertime is when white grubs cause extensive damage to
lawns in our area. When you see areas of your lawn begin to turn
brown, it may be a sign that white grubs are at work.
These “C”-shaped pests can grow to be as plump as your little
finger. They eat grass roots all day and night. If there are enough
grubs, they’ll eat every root there is and you can actually lift the sod
right off the ground. Unfortunately, because they spend their entire
life hidden below ground, these grubs can kill your grass before you
even realize what is happening.
White grubs are the immature stage of various beetles. They
spend the winter deep in the ground and start feeding on plant
roots as the weather warms. When they get big enough, they go
through a pupal stage and then emerge as adult beetles. The adults
fly around and mate, then burrow into the soil to lay more eggs,
starting the cycle all over again.
It’s best to control lawn grubs while they are small, before they
cause any noticeable damage. The larger the grubs grow, the more
damage they cause. Large grubs also are a favorite food of skunks
and raccoons, and these animals often will rip up a lawn in search
of this tasty treat.
Lawn grubs are just one of several insects and diseases that dam-
age lawns.
COMFORT CORNER
By Ken Borts, KBS Heating & Cooling, 770-439-6677
This month I want to explain some of the reasons why freez-
ing up will happen. There are several things that can cause your
HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning) system to freeze
up. Most need to be corrected by your local HVAC Dealer. Mak-
ing sure the filter is clean or replaced and making sure the airflow
is not restricted are some of the things you can check or handle for
yourself.
Low Refrigerant: In some cases, freezing up is caused by a leak
in the refrigerant lines. Weak solder joints, friction from piping rub-
bing or vibrating against an object, leaking valves or loose fittings
can cause leaks. The age of the system and the nature and loca-
tion of the leak are the determining factors on whether to have the
system repaired or replaced.
Dirty Evaporator Coil: Over time, the evaporator coil will be-
come dirty. When this happens, the results are similar to those of
having a dirty filter. Gradually you will lose airflow, slowly enough
that you probably would not realize it until the unit freezes up or is
not cooling adequately.
Defective Blower Motor or Relay: A blower motor not running
at the proper speed or not running at all can cause freezing. It can
also be intermittent, starting at full speed and slowing down after it
heats up. On the other hand, a relay could cause it to start one
time and not the next.
If you have a dirty evaporator coil, defective blower motor or
relay you will have to call a professional to correct the problem.

Chairman’s Corner
Tom Worthan, Chairman
Douglas County Board of Commissioners
The WSA and Its Programs
As Chairman of the Douglas County Board of Commissioners, I automatically serve on the Board of Directors of the Douglasville-
Douglas County Water and Sewer Authority (WSA). The WSA is an independent, State-chartered utility that provides water and sewer
service to most of the residents of Douglas County. The WSA is not a part of City or County government, and it does not receive any
tax revenues. It exists only on user fees.
The WSA gives “award-winning service for our local community” and is operational 24 hours per day, 365 days per year. The WSA
provides 16 million gallons per day (mgd) of drinkable water to Douglas County residents, and treats 6 mgd of wastewater. A current
expansion of the Bear Creek Water Treatment Plant will up the water provision to 23 mgd within the next couple of years. The WSA
has justifiably won numerous local, State and National awards, and I am proud of their responsive and responsible employees.
Dog River Reservoir and Park
The WSA developed the Dog River Reservoir in the southern part of Douglas County, and it serves as our primary drinking water
source. The Dog River Reservoir Recreational Park is a wonderful place to take your family. Although swimming is not allowed,
fishing, picnicking and boating are.
All boats in the Reservoir must be Class A and no greater than 16 feet in length. Gasoline engines and gas storage tanks are not
permitted - remember this is our drinking water source! You must have a valid Georgia fishing license to fish the Reservoir - there’s
plenty of Large-mouth Bass, Crappie, Sunfish, Shoal Bass, Channel Catfish, and Bluegill/Bream to catch! John Boats are available for
rental. Check out the newly designed WSA web site at www.ddcwsa.com for hours of operation, rental fees, and other information.
The Dog River Reservoir Recreational Park recently re-opened after being closed for over two years, due first to the historic drought
and then as the Reservoir was expanded. The Dog River Dam was raised ten feet, so the Reservoir lake level was raised ten feet, and
its water storage capacity increased from 1.2 billion to 1.92 billion gallons. This expansion and additional capacity should be able to
take care of our drinking water needs for the next 20 - 30 years even if another drought affects us, and should be able to take care of
up to about 250,000 residents. We’re not planning on growing that much - double the 125,000 we are now - but it’s nice to know that
the capacity is there. With the water problems being experienced by other areas in metro Atlanta, Lake Lanier, and Lake Allatoona, it
is comforting to know that we are one step ahead. The planning for the additional height to the dam and Reservoir started long before
the drought hit - it takes years of planning, design, and permitting before construction can actually start, then the construction, and
then the rains to fill up the new capacity. This process normally takes about 17 years but our WSA was able to do it in nine. Thanks to
the winter rains, the Reservoir is at full pool as we begin the summer season.
The Reservoir covers 312 surface acres and is 47 feet deep at its deepest point. Because of its size, the Reservoir was able to handle
the shock of the floodwaters from last September but there was significant damage to the dam itself due to the immense volume of
water going over and trying to go around it. The repairs to the dam are almost complete, and the structure is sound.
On-line Bill Payments
A new convenience from the WSA is on-line bill payments. You can pay your bill and view your billing statement electronically using
the Internet. New users will need to set up an account by accessing the WSA web site at www.ddcwsa.com. You may also pay your
bill each month via an automatic bank draft, plus, of course, the traditional methods by mail or in person.
Toilet Replacement Rebate Program Underway
Before the 1950s, toilets typically used 7 gallons of water or more for each flush. By the end of the 1960s, toilets were designed to
flush with 5.5 gallons. The Federal Energy Policy Act of 1992 mandated low-flow fixtures using no more than 1.6 gallons per flush be
installed in all homes constructed during and after 1994. In Douglas County, approximately 59 percent of our homes are pre-1993.
So, most of our homes have water-guzzling toilets, and this costs you money each time you pay your water bill. However, the WSA
will now pay you to replace these old toilets with new low-flow ones.
If your home was built before 1994, replace your old toilets, and the WSA will give you a $50 rebate for installing a 1.6-gallon fixture,
and a $100 rebate for installing a 1.28-gallon fixture, with a maximum of two toilet rebates per applicant. Simply put, this will save you
approximately 4 gallons of water for each usage, and that adds up. The WSA estimates that a family of four will save 20,000 gallons of
water per year and reduce their water bill by $95. It just makes good sense! This conservation effort will also help reduce demands
on the water system, and, in the long term, reduce the need to expand the water treatment program in the future.
Effective May 3rd, the WSA began offering rebates for commercial customers and for multi-family units such as duplexes, triplexes and
apartments. Residential rebates have been in effect since late last year. The program ends later this year, so don’t wait!
September 2009 Flooding and the WSA Response
In the early hours of September 21st, the raging storm waters washed out many roads, culverts and bridges in our County and the
waterlines with them. Almost our complete water system lost pressure, which meant that contaminants could possibly enter into it,
and we were without drinkable water throughout the County. In less than a week, almost all Douglas County residents again had
water due to the dedication and around-the-clock work of WSA employees and contractors. Thank you for your service.
Keeping you informed,
Tom
