Six-Point Strategic Plan for Violence Reduction

1. Convene a local leadership team and broad city-wide work groups.

Organize a cross-sector anti-violence leadership group to facilitate collaboration within


government, between government and the community, and youth and family outcomes.
o Appoint a city- wide governance committee of top-level commitments for the Violence

Reduction Initiative
o Implement communication structures and methods of collaboration for community
partners, youth and families to work together on solving this problem.
o Create (or enhance existing efforts) for a city- wide violence reduction community
advisory team - all of the Mayors initiatives.
o Engage the community by increasing the knowledge and training of faith based
community members, neighborhood association leaders and other community groups on
learning how to reduce crime and recognize the impact of violence on the safety and
welfare of our community.
Activity Collaborate with United Fellowship Breakfast Forum to convene the
first meeting of 110 members of the faith-based community at three locations
throughout the city (North, South, and East) to educate and share solutions for
reducing the impact of violence on youth and families in our communities.
Activity Collaborate and involve HABD, all 99 neighborhoods, Neighborhood
Association Leaders and members, Citizens Advisory Board and other agencies
to educate about best practices and evidence based strategies for violence
reduction, share solutions for reducing the impact of violence on youth and
families in our communities.
2. Engage African-American males from the most affected neighborhoods in community
conversations to develop sustainable solutions.

Create a welcoming and accessible setting that invites residents and young men involved in
violence to be partners in local efforts. Begin a dialogue on how to encourage participation,
identify common ground, and save lives.
o Create Bells Ambassadors as city wide advisors on youth perspectives of violence,
crime, safety and well-being.
o Activity Recruit students (5 per high school and 5 from Drop Out Recovery) for Bells
by September 1st.
o Activity Host city wide events for youth My Brothers Keeper / My Sisters Keeper
aimed at promoting our youth in the month of August.

o Activity: Last week in August host Birmingham City Schools Youth discussion about
violence in collaboration with Summit Media, UAB, BPD Community Services, Parents
against Violence, Youth Against Violence and The Mayors Office
3. Support Birmingham Police Department efforts

Promote existing police department efforts in social services, juvenile services, domestic violence
and community policing.
o Activity Host a variety city wide events that serve as alternatives to gang violence and
promote violence reduction and family well-being beginning in July, August.
o Publish and share Chief Ropers Violence Reduction Strategies

4. Engage and support parents and families

Provide ongoing support to mothers, fathers, and other family members in their efforts to raise
healthy, well-functioning children.
o Support the One Place Family Justice Center, Healthy Families and the YWCA in
efforts to improve the lives of families in Jefferson County and reduce the number of
domestic violence related homicides.

5. Strengthen the skills needed to stop the cycle of violence

Support promising models that can break the cycle of violence by focusing of high-risk
individuals and neighborhoods.
o Activity- Support the Violence Reduction Initiative by hosting quarterly call ins and
increasing custom notifications to those most vulnerable to being involved in gun
violence.
o Activity - Explore programs that impact youth at the street level such as Violence
Interrupters or street outreach workers.
o Activity Provide once a month workshop/meting in collaboration with More than
Conquerors church at public housing meeting to support families and deter youth from
gun and gang violence.

6. Develop a plan of action and engage partnerships


o Create: Construct and implement a data-driven, multi-year plan of action
o Activity: Develop, implement, and monitor a comprehensive action plan in collaboration
with the local leadership teams to measure specific outcomes for African-American males.
Build in the flexibility to modify efforts and circumstances warrant.
o Commit to partner with Birmingham City Schools, Jefferson County Department of
Health public health, Miles College, UAB, Lawson State and Jefferson State colleges
along with community partners on addressing youth violence.
