Evesham Township Manager
Tom Czerniecki thinks the town
has some real gems working for
it, which is why he recently instituted the GEM or Going the
Extra Mile employee recognition program.
Through the GEM program,
residents can nominate township
employees they observe going
the extra mile beyond their regular duties working for the township.
Czerniecki compared the program to the Officer of the
Month program already run by
the Evesham Township Police Department, which he said has successfully increased morale in the
department while simultaneously letting members of the public
know the municipality is always
striving to promote excellence.
With that in mind, Czerniecki

This Uncle Sam doppelgnger entertained residents with some smooth moves on his motorbike
near the start of Eveshams Fourth of July parade last week. Main Street was packed for the event
with smiling faces and lots of red, white and blue. For more photos, please see page 9.

The Evesham Police Department is used to hearing from residents when they need assistance
or have a crime to report.
Yet recently the department
has been asking to hear from residents regarding a slightly different topic residents attitudes
and opinions toward Eveshams
police force in general.
The request comes in the form
of a Customer Satisfaction survey where the department is asking residents to submit responses
to a range of questions about
their thoughts on the department
and any recent interactions a resident may have had with department employees.
In a release sent by Evesham
Police Department Lt. Joseph
Friel, it was noted that the survey
is meant to collect residents opinions on areas such as agency performance, the competence of deplease see RESULTS, page 13

Beuschel is Officer of the Month

Evesham Township Police Department
officer
Andrew
Beuschel has been recognized as
the departments Officer of the
Month for June.
Beuschel is being commended
for his willingness to put the safety of others before his own. His

efforts on June 28 not only saved

the life of a driver but saved the
lives of countless motorists traveling on the roadway.
Beuschel was off-duty on I-95 in
Pennsylvania when he observed a
vehicle moving very slowly with
an unconscious driver who was
slumped over the steering wheel.
He pulled over and ran to the
car, opened the drivers door and
applied the brakes on the vehicle.
After placing the vehicle into
park, he noticed evidence in the

Vehicle collision investigation

results in narcotics arrest
The following reports are on

derly persons offense for possession of marijuana and failure to

surrender CDS. She was released
on her own recognizance.

On June 29 at 10 a.m., an Evesham police officer was investigating a vehicle collision on Route 70 and
Route 73 when he developed suspicion that
one of the drivers was
in possession of narcotics.
During the investigation, Evesham Police K-9 Spike was called
upon to assist officers with the detection of narcotics. Spike was
walked around the exterior of the

he alerted officers to the presence
of narcotics inside the car. A subsequent search of the vehicle by
officers resulted in the discovery
of heroin and marijuana.

in our opinion

Halt! Stop that road work!

108 Kings Highway East

Haddonfield, NJ 08033

Politicians need to stop pointing fingers and come up with a solution

s of last Thursday night at
11:56 p.m., all non-essential
and non-emergency improvements and repairs to state-owned
roads and NJ Transit that are being
funded through the Transportation
Trust Fund halted.
Money in the TTF, which funds
transportation improvements
throughout the state, is running out,
with transportation officials projecting only enough money in the coffers
to pay for emergency and essential
safety repairs for another month.
Gov. Christie and the state Assembly
tried to keep the fund full and make
sure it is replenished when they proposed, and passed, legislation that
would have raised the states gas tax
by 23 cents per gallon while lowering
the sales tax from 7 percent to 6 percent over two years.
New Jerseys current gas tax is the

second-lowest in the nation, they said.

Raising it wouldnt put too big a burden on our drivers an extra $3.45 per
fill-up if you have an empty 15-gallon
tank and the lowered sales tax could
help off-set that.
But the state Senate, led by
Christies Democratic counterparts,
disagreed, failing to pass the proposals, which Christie said forced his
hand in halting the roadwork.
Were not saying Christies gas tax
proposal was a good one. Frankly,
were not smart enough economists to
know both the short- and long-term effects it could have on the Transporta-

tion Trust Fund, the states overall

budget and also on residents pockets.
What we do know, with 100 percent
certainty, is that enough is enough
with party politics. The back and
forth, the hemming and hawing, the
fighting across aisles has to stop. What
we need are solutions, not finger pointing and accusations.
If the Senate Democrats dont believe Christies proposal is a good one,
then they should propose a viable alternative, not just say the governor is
trying to look good in his potential bid
to be Donald Trumps running mate.
And if Christies proposal really isnt
all that good, the governor and his Republican mates should devise a viable
solution that would be acceptable to
Democrats.
Enough is enough. Start working together, because the residents of New
Jersey are beginning to suffer.

High school students can earn college credit at RCBC

High school students have new ways to
earn college credits at Rowan College at
Burlington County, which is partnering
with the Burlington County Institute of
Technology to provide students an engineering path and is offering a new discount on certain online courses to high
school students.
The separate initiatives were approved
by the colleges Board of Trustees recently
as part of RCBCs new College Head Start
in High School, or CH2, initiative aimed to
reduce the time and cost required to attain
a college degree. CH2 also includes the existing College Acceleration Program in
which high school students earn college
credit through high school instruction,
and traditional dual enrollment by which
high school students receive permission to

take RCBC courses outside of their regular

school day.
The College Head Start in High Schools
is a wonderful addition to our Rowan University connection that forms one of the
countrys first seamless paths from high
school diploma to associate and bachelors
degree, RCBC President Paul Drayton
said. Research shows that giving high
school students a head start toward their
degree increases their grades, chances of
attending college and, most importantly,
earning a degree. For motivated students,
the question is simple, Why wait? Earn
college credit now.
Eligible BCIT students can enter the program, the Electronic and Computer Engineering Technology Academy, and earn
more than 30 credits, or more than halfway

toward an associate degree in electronics

engineering technology. RCBC courses will
be offered on BCITs Medford campus allowing students to complete their high
school degree while starting their college
degree at a much lower cost than at a fouryear college.
Students in this program can graduate
from RCBC one year after their high school
graduation. Students interested in learning more about the program can contact
BCIT Director of Admissions Dr. Erin
Conti at (609) 267-4226, ext. 8245 or admissions@bcit.cc.
The partnership still requires approval
from BCITs Board of Education, which is
scheduled to consider the measure later

to the township employees who
work in office roles where they
wouldnt typically interact with
most members of the public on a
daily basis.
If you handle any of the administrative stuff, youre not really going to be seen by the public
and its not really going to give
the public a chance to appreciate
the level of professionalism that
we have here, Czerniecki said.
As just one example of a township employee going the extra
mile, Czerniecki recalls a rainy
day earlier this year when he was
paying his taxes at the municipal
building and overheard an elderly
resident asking the clerks if they
had seen his checkbook he
thought he may have left there
the day before.
About 10 minutes later, Czerniecki was looking out one of

the buildings windows, only to

see township tax collector Kathy
Merkh out in the rain with the
older resident, looking under cars
and bushes still trying to help
him find his lost checkbook.
She represents the type of
people who work for our town
who never get any recognition,
and its been in the back of my
mind for months and is just something that galvanized me, Czerniecki said.
Czerniecki said the program
would also be open to employees
at public works, as well as those
who might not work directly for
the township such as the MUA
or fire department administration.
Residents can nominate an employee on the basis of a single incident or cumulative performance in one or more areas of the
townships core values: honor
and integrity, professional demeanor, commitment to excellence, responsibility, problemsolving attitude, communication,
dignified conduct and loyalty.
Czerniecki said those values
are followed by employees of the

township to help them best serve

Evesham residents.
When youre not being supervised directly, and you have to
make a call on your own, you can
rely on these things and you will
always be supported, Czerniecki
said.
Nominations will be good for a
12-month period, meaning an employee could be recognized for
their actions any month in the
year after a resident first submits
a nomination.
A committee consisting of
management and labor will select
employees to honor monthly, at
which time that employee will be
publicly recognized by the township council and the Marlton
Business Association, which is
co-sponsoring the program.
Im trying to create the link
that when good, high-quality
local government services are
professionally delivered, it complements economic development, Czerniecki said.
To nominate an employee for
the GEM program, residents can

https://lf.eveshamnj.gov/forms/GEMNomination.

partment employees, concerns
residents have regarding the security within the township and
how residents perceive the behavior and attitude of Evesham officers.
To that point, residents who
take the survey will be asked to
rate any interactions they may
have had with an employee of the
Evesham Police Department
within the last year, as well what
position that employee was serving in and where or how the contact took place.
Residents will also be asked
what role they played in the contact (victim, witness, motorists,
arrestee, etc.) and how they would
rate the overall courtesy and demeanor of the officer or department member, as well as the skills
or knowledge of that employee.
Those who filled out the survey
can also list how safe they feel in
Evesham and list their most
pressing safety concerns in town,
such as speeding, personal safety,
vandalism, theft, child safety issues, narcotics/alcohol violations
or several other options.
Residents can also rate the
quality of several services offered
by the department, such as its
neighborhood patrols, traffic law
enforcement, response time,
drunk driving enforcement, assistance
offered
with

domestic/neighborhood disputes,
etc.
Finally, at the end of the survey, residents will be given a
blank space where they can provide the department with any
other comments, recommendations or suggestions for improvement.
Beyond age and gender, the
survey does not require a residents personal information, and
according to the release, the survey will help the department continue to focus on Eveshams
needs as well as further implement transparency within the department.
The results will be used as a
platform for organizational learning and to better address the concerns of the community, the release stated.
Residents who wish to participate in the survey can visit
https://www.surveymonkey.co
m/r/2016ETPDCitizenSurvey.
Residents can also find online
links to the survey on the departments website, the departments
Facebook page and the Evesham
municipal website.
Residents can also request a
paper version of the survey at the
Evesham Township Police Headquarters at 984 Tuckerton Road at
the Township Municipal Complex.
A paper copy can also be
mailed to residents if they so desire. The survey will continue to
be available to residents through
Aug. 31.
