New church to
reach bikers, others
BY ERIN COX
DHI Media News Editor

VAN WERT Tattoos, piercings, jeans and biker gear
are all welcome attire to Whitehorse Biker Church that will
open its doors July 17.
The goal of the church is to provide an inviting atmosphere for the people in the area who have slipped through
the cracks or who do not feel comfortable at other local
churches.
We are going to reach an element that is unchurched or
very disenfranchised with church, Pastor Steve Slowride
Haskins said. Very few people established in churches are
going to come our way thats not our goal. Our goal is to
create a place for these people that are disenfranchised, that
fall through the net, that have no place to go.
The churchgoers of Whitehorse Biker Church do not
need to be bikers, Haskins insisted.
Weve told them were after gun nuts, rednecks, hillbillies, Trump supporters, car guys, people that generally just
dont fit in a normal church, he said.

DELPHOS The 2016 Canal Days Committee once
again promises a fun-filled free entertainment lineup for the
festival weekend.
With such a wide variety in the free entertainment this
year, there is truly something for everyone, committee
member Diane Sterling said.
Friday night will feature the talents of The Logan
Ross Band from Columbus Grove. This band, comprised
of many familiar faces, performs extensively throughout Northwest Ohio. Headed by Logan Ross, Randy
Cavanaugh and Dean Maag, the Logan Ross Band has a
play list spanning decades and multiple genres. They have
been seen in Findlay and Bowling Green and often open for
local favorite Nashville Crush.
The band consists of lead vocalist Logan Ross, who was
born and raised in Columbus Grove. Hes is the life of the
party and always ensures a good time.
Dean Maag, a Kalida native, is the bass player and
backing vocals for the band. He also plays for other bands
like Nashville Crush and will be ready to entertain you at
the drop of a hat.
The drummer, Nate Felkey of Lima, has been playing
since he was 10 years old and has played in large venues
such as Country Concert. He, too, plays with Nashville
Crush when not with Logan.
The up-and-coming Logan Ross Band will bring an
exciting show to Canal Days with hits all the way back to
the 90s.
Taking the stage on Saturday Evening will be the Naked
Karate Girls. No worries they are neither naked nor
girls! This ensemble is a favorite of Buckeye Nation. They
are not just another band, they are an experience.
Consisting of four guys from Cincinnati, Naked Karate
Girls perform an all-encompassing show, with choreography and costumes to make for a fun and entertaining show.
They have done shows for Reds opening weekend and

A deli-style chicken salad and a relish offers a
refreshing way to start a meal.
Deli-Style Chicken Salad
3 cups chopped rotisserie chicken (skin removed,
mostly white meat)
1 stalk celery, diced
1/2 cup mayonnaise
1/4 cup ranch dressing
3/4 cup red seedless grapes, cut in half
Mix all ingredients together. Add more dressing if
needed.
Makes about 4 cups.
*This is similar to Krogers Rotisserie Chicken Salad
Curried Onion Relish
4 fresh Jalapeo peppers or 2 tablespoons chopped
canned Jalapeo peppers
1/4 cup olive oil
4 cups chopped onions (about 2 + 1/2 pounds)
2 tablespoons minced garlic
1/2 cup raisins
1 tablespoon curry powder
Juice of 1 lemon
Juice of 1 lime
1 + 1/2 cups honey
1 + 1/2 cups white vinegar
1/4 cup chopped cilantro or Chinese parsley
Salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste
If you are using fresh Jalapeo peppers, slice them in
half, remove the seeds, and mince.
In a large sauce pan, heat the oil over medium heat.
Add the onions, Jalapeo peppers, garlic, raisins, and
curry powder, and saut for 5 minutes. Remove the
mixture from the heat and pour into a heatproof bowl.
In the same saut pan, over high heat, mix the lemon
and lime juices, honey and vinegar. Let the liquid come
to a boil, reduce the heat, and simmer for 5 minutes.
Pour the liquid into the bowl with the onions. Add the
chopped cilantro and salt and pepper. Blend well. Cool.
The relish will thicken as it cools. Makes 6 cups.
*Use as a condiment with any meat, fish or poultry
and can be stored in the refrigerator for at least two
weeks.

On the
dance experience Other Hand
Whew! The past several days have
just flown by! The awesome Kiwanis
Fourth of July Celebration took up my
weekend and beyond and then a big
newspaper production day on Tuesday
kept me on the straight and narrow.
Wednesday afternoon I took off for
Kalahari and Lotuss Starquest National
Dance Competition. As I said last week,
I have watched her dance on the live
feed from the event but never in person.
What a difference it makes! While I kept
from outright crying, because that would
just be weird and embarrassing in front
of so many people, I did tear up and my
heart was in my throat as she danced,
twirled and jumped her way to the highest honor of the week Miss Starquest!
I am so proud of her and glad I got to see
her dance the entry that brought her the
title. I couldnt stay for the actual Elite
8 dance-off Thursday evening but Im
pretty sure they could hear us cheering
clear up in Sandusky.
My husband has attended her nationals for the last four years and we talk and
text a lot while he there so I had a vague
idea of what I was going to be doing but
there is nothing that could have prepared
Byron McNutt
People Make
the Difference
going to get more crazy and volatile as the future goes from TV to
online video and other still-in-development digital formats.
You may know millennials
who dont have a TV in their
home. They get by with their
phones and tablets. They refuse
to pay for cable or satellite services when they can get commercial-free entertainment from
Netflix and can stream pirated
copies of shows online.
These rule-breaking rebels can
text, use Twitter and get everything they want via social media
like Facebook. They tell me they
download ad-blocking software
on laptops and smartphones. If
they want to watch or access
advertising or product information they can do it when it suits
them.
They make a good point. If
you subscribe to cable or satellite TV for entertainment, why
should you be forced to watch
endless hours of commercials for
products you dont need or want?
They download apps that allow
them to skip ads, block ads or
avoid them entirely.
Mega marketers are fighting
back. They pay content producers
of their favorite shows, movies
and sporting events to incorporate product placement in the
action. Just watch. Your favorite
college and professional teams
and athletes will soon be walking
billboards.
DEAR EDITOR:
When we talk about being proud to be an American we
rightfully talk about freedom and liberty, but there is something else we take for granted. Law and order make it possible
to live and pursue these important ideals. None of us would
live under tyranny or anarchy by choice; and this is something
the founding fathers (in their wisdom) understood. What is
most concerning today is the cycle of violence and breakdown
in law and order occurring today in our great country. Look
at the assaults (by criminals and prosecutors) on our first
responders; domestic terrorism, and lack of respect and personal responsibility. When we question the safety of traveling to
other parts of our country (let alone other countries) and even
shopping in a local mall because of the lack of Law and Order,
it is time to be very concerned. So please thank and support
your friends in the military and all of the first responders who
protect our very neighborhoods. God bless America.
