Hello everyone, the shortest day has now passed,

what amazing skies we've had. We live in a beautiful
coastal village with a vibrant heritage and an exciting
future. We should all spend more time understanding
the environment in which we live and the heritage of
our community. We need to be responsible for the
consequences of how we live and the impact we have
on our coastal environment. June has been an
eclectic month for the BHA
9 Bridge Rd, Heritage Values Review - As most are
aware there is a current planning application
proposing the complete demolition of the extant 19th
century house and its replacement with a three storey
mixed-use building. The BHA with Ross Harrison
commissioned an independent review of the heritage
values of the house and site. This report has been
prepared by RBA Architects + Conservation
Consultants. This is a wonderful report and available
on our website. We have requested an Interim
Heritage listing through CoGG and understand that
the independent review they have commissioned has
confirmed the importance of the site, and the
recommendation. Here is a brief summary from
CoGG of the next steps regarding the proposed
heritage overlay:
Council officers are finalising a report to the
Council (administrators) on the heritage overlay for 9
Bridge Rd
The report is scheduled for the Council
meeting on 26 July 2016
If Council resolves to support the heritage
overlay we will request the Minister for Planning
to apply an interim control as a matter of urgency
using his powers under 20(4) of the Planning
and Environment Act.
Once Council has requested the interim
overlay under 20(4) of the P&E Act, the house is
protected from demolition under the Building Act.
If Council agrees, we will also request the
Minister's authorisation for a planning scheme
amendment to apply a permanent control,
subject to a normal process of public exhibition,
review by an independent Panel etc.
The final decisions on both the interim and
permanent heritage overlay are with the Minister.
There is no certainty that he will use his powers
under 20(4), Minister's have made decisions
either way in the past.
The township plan shows that the subject site formed
part of Allotment 1 Section A, a one acre parcel of
land, which was purchased by Alfred Hill Roadknight
(a well-known Geelong valuer and estate agent) for
27 on 22 June 1886. The report concludes:
Arguably, the subject house is the most prominent
19thcentury house in the town, being located on a

corner block at the southern end of the main

street. It has landmark qualities particularly when
considered together with the large cypress (70-80
years old), which is evocative of early beachside
development. Although the house has undergone
alterations, it retains design features of its original
late Victorian style including the gabled roof form,
the original rendered chimney with terracotta
chimney pots, timber slatted screens and finials to
the gable ends, corrugated sheet metal roof
cladding (not original fabric) and weatherboard
wall cladding. It is noted that unlike a number of
other 19thcentury houses in Barwon Heads, which
were relocated to their current site in the
20thcentury, the subject house has remained on
its original site.
Federal Election 2016 - The election will be over by
the time Talking Heads goes to print. (Such a relief).
Congratulations to the winner. The Barwon Heads
Association has no political affiliations however we
endeavor to form good working relationships with all of
our political representatives. We have developed a
very close relationship with the Ocean Grove
Community Association and we again jointly hosted a
political forum for Corangamite on the 20th of June. We
know Sarah Henderson and Libby Coker, but a
number of the other candidates were just names. We
were pleased that 8 candidates participated and over
120 Barwon Heads and Ocean Grove residents
attended. The following topics were prioritized:
Corangamite economy, environment, infrastructure,
health and retirement. There was also passionate
discussion on the plans by the Coalition for a
plebiscite on gay marriage and on the fate of refugees
in offshore centres. Thank you to all who participated.
Especially Michael Harbour and Phil Emery and to the

Ocean Grove Bowling Club for providing us with a

very nice room for the meeting and for looking after
us.
Security and Safety - We continue to participate in
important discussion on security and safety on the
Bellarine. We are members of the Bellarine
Community Safety Group We urge all to lock your cars
and houses, don't leave obvious items in your cars
and be aware. We are not used to having to think
defensively as there has been virtually no crime in
Barwon Heads until recently. So the recent break ins
and thefts have taken us all by surprise. You will notice
that many traders are now leaving empty cash
drawers at the front of their shops.
We have also joined the Bellarine Police Community
Support Register and encourage you to go online and
register www.bellarineregister.org.au. And support the
Barwon Heads neighbourhood watch group.
Environment Minister Neville has launched the
Geelong Queenscliff Coastal Adaption Program,
details are on www.ourcoast.org.au .There is a
community information session on the 3rd August at the
Ocean Grove Shell Rd Pavilion from 2pm 8pm. The
work done as part of this program has identified
vulnerable areas in the Bellarine. The project has
involved detailed technical assessment of coastal data
and resulted in a series of hazard maps showing
inundation in a range of severe weather events and
sea level rise scenarios. This information supports our
argument that our coastal villages should not be over
developed beyond our natural capacity to cope.
The Barwon Heads Structure Plan 2010 (is being
reviewed now), states: Barwon Heads is not
designated as a growth location and is in fact situated
between two areas which are strategically supported
for further urban development; Ocean Grove and
Armstrong Creek.

School Holidays
Well, by the time you read this, all the election hype
will be over, and well be hoping to see lots of
people at the Op Shop, because it will be winter
school holidays. Weve been selling many gloves,
scarves, and gear that possibly shows that some
lucky families will be going to see the snow at that
time, but others will be here, and wed love to see
you. Im always so impressed when I see kids who
arrive with their special purse containing money
theyve saved up. Some of this may have been
spent very carefully choosing some small
ornament, or perfume or jewellery for mothers as
their Mothers Day present. Other children dont
even appear in the Main Shop where I usually
work, because they make straight for the huge
numbers of toys we have out in our Show-room. Of
course we know that most kids have FAR too many
toys in these more affluent times! May be that is
why so very many almost perfect toys are donated

to us. My grandchildren always make straight for

that area, though often they hunt through the many
great books we have out there. It never ceases to
amaze me that some of these books have hardly
been opened! Some are very ancient treasures,
and recently I bought and began to read a copy of
the original Blinky Bill to my two, who knew the
cartoon version, but recognized that the one I was
reading was very different, and really great. So I do
hope that we see many children carefully counting
up the coins in their purse to work out just how
many small toys, or books, or cute ornaments they
can buy during this time.

Our Op Shop was opened in Sept. 1980,

and I have now worked here for 23
years!
When I first came, we were only open Wednesday
and Saturday, for two hours each time. During
school holidays, however, the shop did open, as
we do now, for five days of the week, though only
for two hours each day. Now, we are open Tuesday
till Saturday from 10 a.m. till 1 p.m., and rather than
the five volunteers who would serve you, we now
have thirty-five on our list. Some of our volunteers
have worked at the shop almost as long as I have,
and some are very welcome newcomers. Some
are on our roster only during school holiday times,

and we are so grateful to these kind people who

help us out in this way. The winter season is always
the hardest to find the necessary nine volunteers
for any one day. We need this number because
with three separate areas, the Main Shop, Sorting
Room, and Show Room, we must have that
number to ensure that we can all have a Morning
Tea break etc.
I am truly blessed that we do have such
wonderfully committed volunteers, because each
of us needs some R&R time, and often, especially
during the winter season, up to a quarter of our
volunteers head off up north to thaw out after
Barwon Heads turns on its bleak winds and drifting
or driving rain.
At least we appreciate the warmer weather when it
comes, and we DO need the rain! With heaters in
each area, the shop should be a welcoming place,
so DO please come and see what bargains you
can find.
Your presence, together with the donations you
give, make the work that we do really worthwhile.
In the mean-time, keep warm, and enjoy the fact
that we should not still be flooded with endless
political fuss soon!
God bless you,
Helen Edwards
Shop Supervisor

She began her journey in France with Claude Debussy (born 1862 & died in Paris
in 1918) & chose Suite Bergamasque composed in 1890 but , as he wasnt
satisfied with it, he revised it & eventually published it 15 years later in 1905.
Amongst the four movements is Claire de Lune so it was good that the publishers
encouraged its publication, otherwise we may never have heard this fabulous
collection of four character pieces!
The next country was Germany where Ludwig van Beethoven was born ( Bonn
1770 & died in Vienna in 1827) & Sonoka chose one of the all-time favourites, the
Moonlight Sonata no.14 Op.27 (which has been described as quasi una fantasia
by a review writer while on the banks of a lake in Switzerland!) (1800-1),a thrilling &
brilliant performance, all memorised, as was the entire concert!
The third country chosen by Sonoka was Australia! Rae Howell was born in
Melbourne but is now based in London. Sonoka related the story that as she was
driving along listening to ABC fm, she had to stop to listen to this fascinating piece.
It was the story of a Bluebird in a theatre production in Germany. An old man had
lived in this castle all his life & one day a Bluebird landed on his window sill & he
asked the little bird what the rest of the world was like. The little bird told him that
there was an amazing enchanted forest out there. The old man was so happy that
now he knew all about the world, that he just shuts his eyes in contentment!
The last country on this musical journey was Argentina! Alberto Ginastera (born
Buenos Aires 1916 & died in Geneva in 1983). The Spanish speaking Argentinians
loved lively music & dancing & he certainly composed exciting music with intricate
& unusual rhythms. Sonoka chose two very demanding pieces; The Dance of the
old Herdsman & The arrogant Cowboy which had some very descriptive &
unusual meanings! They were a brilliant & dramatic finale to a wonderful concert!
Our next concert is The Victoria Welsh Choir on Sunday,10th July 2016 at 2,30pm.
It will be held in Barwon Heads Community Hall. The beautiful harmonies of the

The review will consider strategic planning
issues for the town, including managing
growth, infrastructure issues, urban
character and vegetation protection.
In relation to vegetation the review will address an issue
identified in the 2010 Structure Plan regarding the
character of the Warrenbeen Court Area. We support the
strong focus of the Save Barwon Heads group to protect
the boundaries of Barwon Heads, but also feel that
saving Barwon Heads will also require a whole of town
focus and this review of the Structure Plan cannot
assume the continuation of the residential zones that are
in the planning scheme. Development of the scale
encouraged by the RGZ and GRZ will put considerable
pressure on our vulnerable coastal environment. Our
township does not have the infrastructure or capacity to
absorb the scale of development encouraged by the new
zones. The implications of the new zones in particular
the RGZ are creating significant tensions in the town and
situations of conflict are developing which are not good
for community welfare and neighborliness. There are
now over 150 0bjections to the proposed development at
9 Bridge Rd. We will become adversarial and experts at
VCAT. This is not coastal living. We urge everyone to
inform themselves of the Structure Plan and participate.

City of Greater Geelong - We have written to the new

Administrators and requested a meeting to get to know
them. Hopefully they will attend one of our meetings
soon. We have found an allocation in the Geelong
Budget to fix some of our footpaths. We note huge
expenditure in Armstrong Creek and wonder what we get
back for our high rates.
Pedestrian Safety project - the working group met with
Vic Roads at the end of June. We understand that the
estimated commencement day is 18th July and will take 8
weeks with works staged to reduce interruption to traffic.
This is a very exciting project, which is the result of
funding allocation of $800,000 by the Hon Lisa Neville.
Ozone Rd storm water outfall into Barwon River - this
is stage 4 of the drainage plan for Barwon Heads.
Apparently the only option for the management of storm
water is to pump it into the Barwon River at Ozone Rd. No
environmental impact study has been done. The new
zonings and much higher density have resulted in the
need for bigger pipes.
Remember every time you cut down trees and build big 5
bedroom houses with masses of bathrooms there is the
potential for a negative impact on the environment, your
neighbors and our coastal village. How many other towns
pump storm water into the Barwon River? We are the
custodians of The Barwon Heads so it all washes
through here.

And so on and so on until he made his

way to the back room of our little cottage.
Which is his own sacred space. His little
bedroom.
As the grey day folded into its velvet
night, one by one the lights went on in our
home. All except the light in the back
bedroom. In my wingmans sacred
space. In his little bedroom.

So, it was suddenly dark on Tuesday.

Until then, our winter had been unfolding
quietly. Still gracing us with spectacular
seaside days. But on Tuesday, the sun
just didnt seem to want to come up. The
seasons grey rain made it tricky to get
out of bed. When we finally did pull
ourselves from our doonas, all the things
we would usually do outside, we now had
to bring indoors. Things for me like drying
the clothes. Things for my girls like
practicing handstands. And things for my
wingman like kicking his footy.
As I hung another uniform over the
wooden clothes horse, my girls balanced
in handstands on the wall. I heard a loud
thump coming from the kitchen. To which
I called out to my youngest lad - dont
kick your footy inside mate!
But my wingman can be a little slow on
the uptake. Sometimes you need to
speak straight into his eyeballs for him to
register meaning in your words. Maybe
my request was too vague. Or maybe too
obscure. So I told his eyeballs - room by
room - where not to kick his football.
Dont kick your footy in the lounge.
Or the toilet.
Or your sisters bedroom.

My youngest lad, eyes directed at the

floor, walked out to me in the kitchen.
Slowly scuffing and dragging his feet.
The light in my room isnt working, he
said, I press the switch but the light just
doesnt come out.
I asked my wingman what had
happened. Whether there had been any
sparks, or sounds, or footballs involved in
the not-working-light.
It just stopped working by itself.
We walked to the back of the house
where I turned off the switch, stood on a
chair and checked the globe in my
youngests room. The filament itself was
snapped broken. The globe was bent off
to one side. There was an angled dent in
the spirals of the glass.
Angled in the shape of a 6 year olds
football.
I asked my wingman gently one more
time, are you sure you didnt kick your
footy in your room?
The brightness fell from my youngest
lads eyes. He bent over double and held
his arms around his belly. His face started
to crumble as his tears started to roll. He
told me he felt sick in his tummy and
wanted to go to bed.
Think hip openers, forward folds and nadi

shodhani.
Sometimes we feel things that we dont
have the words for. Because maybe
were too young to know the experience
of the emotion, or maybe the feelings are
just too hard to feel at the time. But our
un-acknowledged feelings can be
harboured within our bodies. We feel
them as a presence of imbalance. It
becomes a stiffness or a weakness, a
vulnerability or a pain. Our yoga practice
encourages us to slowly move into the
areas of ourselves that might hold sticky
spaces. To explore unconscious habits
that may manifest as tight hips or sore
tummies. To unfold ourselves completely
just as each day folds through each
season. While in doing so, bringing the
freedom that can be felt when you set
your veiled layers aside.
My 6 year old wingman doesnt
understand the concept of shame. Hes
too small to know guilt and he hasnt
learnt embarrassment yet. He just knows
that lying to someone he loves makes his
tummy feel sick. And that when he has a
sore tummy, something in his world isnt
right. So we sat there under the broken
light within the darkness of his bedroom
walls, and we spoke about our tummies.
About how it can tell us a lot about our
feelings. That our tummy is a place in our
body that if we can connect to fully, we
can trust completely. And if we listen
quietly and patiently, our tummy will steer
us in the direction we need to go.
After a cuddle and a cry, my wingman told
me he had kicked the football in his
bedroom. That he had accidentally
kicked it high and that it had broken the
light. He told me he was so sorry and that
he wouldnt do it again. He said his sore
tummy was feeling better because he
had told me what he had done. I reached
down to my youngest lad, I put my hand
on his beautiful belly,
And asked him if he was hungry for a hot
chocolate.

SUMMIT ENERGY HEALING in Barwon Heads

Everyone gets sensitivity sometimes usually from
cold drinks or ice cream. With the cold weather on its
way sometimes just breathing in the cold air can set
it off. Sensitivity can mean you have a cavity in your
tooth, and the food is getting into the nerve causing
pain.
Sensitivity is more concerning if you are getting
sensitive to hot things or sweat, it is more likely to be
a hole in your tooth.
Generalised cold sensitivity can mean that you have
dentine hypersensitivity. This is when the enamel of
your tooth has worn away or thin, and the cold can
get into the layer of tooth underneath called the
'dentine.' This most commonly happens at the gum
line because the enamel is naturally thin in this area.
The dentine is porous so cold can get into the pulp
(the nerve).

How can I fix this?

Sensitive toothpastes like Sensodyne or Colgate
Sensitive have ingredients in them that block these
tubules and stop the cold getting in the tooth. This

protection builds up over time, so if you have

on-going sensitivity, you will need to keep using
these toothpastes.
There are also desensitising treatments your
dentist can provide that work in a similar way. If
the sensitivity does not ease or you get
sensitivity to heat or sugar you should consider
seeing a dentist. You may have a cavity, the
sooner you catch it the better!
Make sure you are using a soft toothbrush and
not brushing too hard. Plaque has the
consistency of cream, so you do not need to
scrub hard to get it off your teeth.
Check out oceanbreezedental.com.au for
more information on brushing technique. You
can also pop into the practice (3/73 The Trak
Arcade, The Terrace, Ocean Grove) to pick up
some free sensitive toothpaste samples.
(Note- We are not affiliated with any toothpaste
companies and do not recommend any brand
in particular. We do find that the 'sensitive'
toothpastes do help patients with dentine
sensitivity, however.)

Shelf Life

Steve Craddock's thoughts on books & writing from down here on the river bank

Observant readers may have

noticed the row of Ransome books
on our Shelf Life bookshelf, so its
quite obvious that I have been a
fan for years.
I first read all 12 books as a little boy, but
I still return to them every few years and
they still delight me. I have even been
soppy enough to give the boats I built
over the years names from the books, like
Scarab and Missee Lee.
My personal favourite is We didnt mean
to go to sea, set aboard the yacht Goblin.
As the result of a simple, plausible
misadventure, the four Swallows
children John, Susan, Titty and Roger
find themselves out in the North Sea,
without their skipper Jim Brading.
Almost immediately, their home harbour
recedes beyond reach and John is forced
to take command and do his best as a
reluctant skipper to keep them all safe.
After all kinds of adventures, they cross
to the harbour of Flushing in Holland,
where everything turns out (of course)
for the best.
The tone of this fine novel is quite
inspiring, as the children problem solve
and gradually develop the confidence to

take responsible steps to keep

themselves and the boat as safe as
possible. Later, their father,
Commander Ted Walker, a naval
officer, displays a breezy trust in his
children, a solid conviction that they
can and will do their best in
adversity. His unshakeable pride and
confidence in them is quite different
from the fog of anxiety that seems to
hang about our kids these days. His
cheery motto is:
Grab a chance and you wont be
sorry for a might have been.
And he once sent the family a very
succinct telegram:
Better drowned than duffers, if not
duffers wont drown.
Collectively, the Ransome books are
usually called the Swallows and
Amazons series. They were first
published between 1930 and 1947,
but they have never been out of print,
and the stories are still regularly
filmed for TV. In their day, readers
waited expectantly every year for the
next book, just as once in our times
they waited impatiently for the next
Rowling.

They are very unlike current childrens

or young adults books. Dont bother if
you are a connoisseur of fiction
involving ultra-violence, zombies, sexual
abuse or incest, you will be very
disappointed indeed!
For me, their appeal is in the adventures
and in the practicalities. Ransome books,
in a way, are handbooks for kids messing
about outdoors. Expect plenty of serious
sailing; fire-lighting; camping; and
exploring. And be assured that
Ransome, an adventurer himself all his
life, was meticulous in getting the
technical details right.

Walking The Camino Santiago

Decades ago I read a novel by

mystic author Paulo Coelho, The
Pilgrimage and then in the early
2000's I read a book written by
Shirley MacLaine called The
Camino. Both of these authors
inspired me immensely to follow
their 800 kilometre walk across
Northwestern Spain which was
known as 'The Camino Frances' or
'The Way of St James'.

page 11

By Valya Bazalicki
that I can trust and surrender to life and....
"Allow things to be just as they are. Allow people to be just
as they are. Allow myself to be just as I am"
I did return a transformed woman with a remarkable
achievement embedded in my heart and a grateful attitude
to maintain.
Thank you,
Valya

Since the Middle Ages, hundreds of thousands of

people have followed the steps of Christian pilgrims to
the Cathedral in Santiago de Compostela to confirm
their religious belief, in search of forgiveness or life's
spiritual meaning and to honour the burial place of the
remains of the apostle St James.
Over the years, living in Barwon Heads, I continued with
my love of regular walking along the river, on the
beaches and over the paths of the Bluff and I
intermittently kept my interest upon The Camino walk.
Then last year, I read another book on the Camino and
the overwhelming desire came to me that if I don't do this
now, then, I may never achieve one on my bucket-list
goals. So, quietly I planted the seed thought in my heart
and I decided to commit to walk The Camino, by myself,
from St Jean Pier de Port in France to Santiago de
Compostela, Spain.
I started researching into the preparation for the walk
and found heaps of support from a guide book by John
Brierley and various online forums and websites. I
trained with Paul and good friend Leanne and bought all
the lightweight, durable clothing and equipment needed
for the trip. I was not the perfect specimen of fitness and
the osteopath was worried about my hips and back pain
but I committed to regular Pilates and strengthened my
core to support my body. I had never travelled by myself
before nor left my children for an extended time but in
late April this year I landed in France ready for an
adventure. I took 25 days to walk 600 of the 800
kilometres of The Camino Frances. I walked between 22

to 35kms on any given day in all types of weather, from

snow falling in the Pyrenees, through periods of rain and
fierce wind but thankfully, with some lovely elements of
calm and sunshine breaks.
I personally chose to walk mostly on my own, yet the
Camino is renown to be a social affair, as up to 200,000
people walk it each year. I met people from all around the
world, walking their own individual journey but
collectively we shared the amazing nature filled
experience. Teenagers walked from church youth
groups, retired couples walked, young wandering
travellers, many cyclists rode, and even women in their
70's took on the pilgrimage. The Camino definitely had
its challenges and was not an easy walk, with many hills
to climb, uneven terrain, ever changing weather
conditions, slippery downhill stretches and all of those
kilometres to endure day after day. But all that is offset by
the vibrant presence of the beautiful natural
surroundings, igniting all of your senses and
encompassing a wide range of feelings and intimate
thoughts.

TEN THOUSAND THINGS

A common question on the Camino is "why are you

walking The Way?" I heard many different and
interesting explanations. I asked myself almost everyday
"Why am I doing this massive walk." I came to the
conclusion that I was walking to remember who I really
was before I got caught in the automatic ways of living
mindlessly. I wanted to return to true self and retune into
the intuition of my heart to find my inner peace and
harmony that had gone off balance over the past several
years.
So I walked slowly and mindfully and I focused on myself
- my health, love, my family, my values, my friends and as
best as I could, I was aware of every present moment
and absorbed the healing energy of the surrounding
natural light, the abundance of flora, the sound of
tranquility and the right, vivid colours. I listened to the
symphony of birds with open ears, I looked at the allconsuming sights with fresh eyes, I absorbed the smells
of the clean air and flowers and plants, I used my sense
of touch to further enhance my sensory experience and I
took time to taste and appreciate the coffee, the food and
wine I was given.
I had many insights while I was away walking and I had
the luxury of time to reflect, contemplate and be grateful
for what is important to me. My biggest realisation was

In this life Im a woman. In my next life Id like to

come back as a bear.
When youre a bear, you get to hibernate. You
do nothing but sleep for 6 months...I could deal
with that.
Before you hibernate, youre supposed to eat
yourself stupid. I could deal with that too.
When youre a girl bear, you birth your children
(who are the size of walnuts) while youre
sleeping and wake to partially grown, cute &
cuddly cubs. I could definitely deal with that.
If youre a mamma bear, everyone knows you
mean business. You swat anyone who bothers
your cubs. If your cubs get out of line, you swat
them too. I could deal with that.
If youre a bear, your mate EXPECTS you to
wake up growling. He EXPECTS that you will
have hairy legs and excess body fat!
Yup gonna be a bear!

WORD ABOUT THE HOOD

Image - barwonbluff.com

WHAT'S COOKING AT
THE LOBSTER POT?
Bridge partner getting a bit
annoying? Golf balls getting
harder to find?
The old bike creaking a bit more lately (not to
mention the old bones)? Then why not join the
cheerful gang of Lobster Pot Volunteers?
Did the aborigines see the Mt Duneed volcano
erupt? What are middens and why are they all
along the coast near here? Discover the
history of the Earl of Charlemont shipwreck
just off 13th Beach. What happened to the
man who shot the bullock for survival (the gun
is on display)? How does the tiny Ruddy
Turnstone find its way to Siberia and back to
Barwon Heads each year? What's a shark egg
look like?
The answers to these questions and a
thousand others can be found at The Barwon
Estuary Heritage Centre (to use its official
title). The Lobster Pot might look like a sleepy
green shed in the At The Heads carpark, but
it's home to hundreds of fascinating samples
and displays from shipwreck treasures to
fossils, birds, plants and animals. Not to
mention the precious little fish, urchins, crabs,
snails and sea-stars that need a bit of TLC.
So why not come along to learn something
new? You can also meet some new local
friends and give us a hand over the summer
open days to inspire and welcome some of the
hundreds of visitors to our beautiful town.
To connect with the adventures of The
Lobster Pot drop into the Barwon Coast
office or call Maddie Glynne (5254 1118).

Every two years, all suitable

ocean beach habitat for Hooded
Plovers along the coasts of
Victoria, South Australia and
NSW, is surveyed across a
weekend in mid-November.
The aim is to achieve our best estimate of the
population of Hooded Plovers in eastern
mainland Australia. We also are able to assess
the state of the birds habitat and attain a
snapshot of threats across sites, enabling a
rapid assessment of the health of the
population. A lot of planning goes into this
count to make it comparable over time, and to
coordinate hundreds of volunteers to walk
thousands of kilometres, almost
simultaneously!
In November 2014, 426 volunteers surveyed
2,339 kms of ocean beach habitat across
Victoria, South Australia and New South Wales,
providing us with the best census coverage of
Hooded Plovers on the eastern mainland since
the start of the programme in 1980.
A total of 1,412 Hooded Plovers (1,342 adults
and 70 juveniles) were counted, comprising
approximately 47% of the world population
(eastern subspecies) and close to 95% of the
mainland breeding population.
In November 2012, 2,334 kms of suitable
coastline (i.e. Hooded Plover habitat) was
identified in NSW, Victoria and South Australia,
of which 80% was surveyed. A total of 1,248
Hooded Plovers (1,207 adults and 41 juveniles)
were counted: In Victoria (84% of coast
surveyed): 568 Hooded Plovers (565 adults and
3 juveniles). In South Australia (77% of coast
surveyed): 621 Hooded Plovers (591 adults and
30 juveniles). In New South Wales (89% of coast
surveyed): 59 Hooded Plovers (51 adults and 8
juveniles).
Locally, in 2012 along the coast from
Queenscliff to Lorne 31 hooded plovers were
counted.
On the same stretch of coast in 2014, a total of
43 hooded plovers were counted!

News from the Beaches and Coastal Environs

Barwon Coast is a Committee of
Management appointed by the State
Government with responsibility for
the management of 13km of coastal
crown land from 7W Collendina to
42W Blue Rocks, Barwon Heads covering our
beautiful beaches in Ocean Grove, Barwon Heads
a n d
1 3 t h B e a c h .
Our Committee members are local residents appointed
with consideration of the skills and experience that they
have to offer in the management of this important piece
of coastline.

OUR ENVIRONMENT: WINTER WONDERS

Well summer has
finally left us
making most of
us slower in the
cooler months.
Did you know
that the coastal
environment is
still very active
this time of the
year with new plants emerging and wildlife species
migrating or emerging to grace us with their presence?
Within the Coastal Moonah Woodlands a variety of
dainty and fragile orchid
species such as Pink
Notched onion orchid
Fairies and Notched
Onion orchids are
relishing in this cooler
weather.
Fungi, the
unsung heroes of
ecosystems, often
hidden out of view start to
emerge. Fungi not only
provide food and

medicines, but can also
be found in, or on, other
plant roots to facilitate
barwonbluff.com
water and nutrient
uptake. The original
recyclers, fungi decompose organic material providing
additional nutrients to our soils.
Wildlife along our coastline has changed as well.
Whales have started their migration with recent
sightings off Ocean Grove Main Beach. This time of the
year you may be lucky enough to sight Southern

Right Whales and

Humpback Whales.
Pink fairy orchid
Whales can be hard to
see and equally difficult
to identify. A simple tip,
observe the blow pattern.
If it has a V shaped
pattern it will be a
Southern Right Whale,
whilst a single spout may
well be a Humpback
Whale.
Barwon Coast wildlife Parkweb photo K.im Cott
database indicates the
earliest record for whale sightings was May 16th 2011.
We welcome all wildlife sightings so we can grow the
wildlife database together. Keep your eyes out for more
whale sightings along our coast. Amazing animals to see
in the wild.
One of Australia's most threatened species, the Orange
bellied Parrot is one of only two species of parrot which
migrates, and it has arrived from Tasmania to feed
amongst the remaining saltmarsh stands where it will
remain until its flight back to Tasmania around October.
Frogs are a key indicator on environmental health and
should start croaking soon. Geelong has 9 frog species,
most of which are nocturnal, but the endangered
Growling Grass Frog may be seen basking during the
daylight hours. Floodplains are an important habitat for
the Ewing's Tree Frog, whilst the Common Froglet can be
found under logs or moist depressions.
So get out there, start looking along our pathways, sit
quietly and listen for the frog calls, get the binoculars out
and go whale spotting. More importantly remember
what is common today may not be common tomorrow so
please stick to the pathways, keep your pets under
control, pick up litter so we can ensure these amazing
plants and animals remain here for future generations.
RESPONSIBLE PET OWNERSHIP: CATS
Did you know an adult female cat is called the 'queen'
and can produce 2-3 litters per year? Cats make great
pets and compared to dogs, cats cope better with being
left alone however there are some rules relating to
responsible pet ownership. All cats aged three months
and over must be registered with council, and
microchipping and de-sexing is compulsory. Cats must
not cause nuisance and are not legally allowed to enter
someone else's property day or night. Cats not confined
to their own property are susceptible to developing
abscesses or disease from fighting, sustain injuries from
vehicle strikes, dog attacks or being trapped. Most
nuisance problems caused by cats occur at night. A

straying cat does not mean it is unowned or unwanted,

and therefore it is a legal requirement to hand over stray
cats to council to give the owner a greater chance of
reclaiming their pet. So let's all hale the queen because
animal welfare is your duty of care.
OCEAN GROVE SURF BEACH COMPLEX
Barwon Coast continue to work with the Ocean Grove
Surf Life Saving Club to finalise the plans for the
redevelopment of the building. The redevelopment of the
SLSC And The Dunes caf is considered a high priority
project and all efforts are being made to finalise the
redevelopment plans as soon as is possible; when
finalised redevelopment timelines will be established so
that work can begin at the earliest opportunity for all
concerned.
CYLINDERS BEACH ACCESS 31W BARWON
HEADS
Barwon Coast is continuing to work on options for access
from the 'Cylinders' car park down to 13th Beach. Last
week a potential piling contractor visited an adjacent site
to provide advice on options for construction of a new
staircase.
The site of the old staircase, lost late last year, is still
active and presents almost insurmountable problems for
re-building on the same site. All other options are being
investigated including funding possibilities for those
options. Barwon Coast knows it is a popular site and
have received input from stakeholder groups supporting
a replacement access in some form.
We will continue to work toward the best outcome
possible and to also keep the community updated as
planning progresses.

BARWON HEADS URBAN FIRE BRIGADE

Barwon Heads Fire Brigade serving our community for 80 years
The 1st of July was our official birthday and as we celebrate turning 80 years young, it provides an
important milestone to reflect on our role in the Barwon Heads community.
In 1936 when the Brigade was first formed, the purpose was very much the same as it is today to support our community and
protect people, property and livestock. As well as turning out to incidents whether they be house fires, motor vehicle accidents
or gas leaks we also share our knowledge with community groups, attend street meetings to discuss fire preparedness plans
and run education sessions with school children.
And let's not forget the annual Santa Run.
Across the Bellarine we support our fellow volunteer brigades and they also support us. Just recently the Connewarre Fire
Brigade joined us at a controlled burn and we worked with both the Ocean Grove career firefighters and volunteers at a house
incident in Ocean Grove on the June long weekend.
We work closely with the Ocean Grove career firefighters across the year and share a mutual respect for our collective skills,
expertise and experience.
I am sure you will all have seen the ongoing media coverage of the EBA negotiations and the conflict between the UFU and
CFA. People stop us in the street to ask our views and some have asked if we will resign in protest. While we deplore any
clauses in the EBA agreement that could dilute the ability of the Chief Officer to make operational decisions regarding CFA
volunteers, we are fundamentally in support of ensuring respect is maintained between volunteers and our career colleagues.
We remain committed to the Barwon Heads community and being available to respond to incidents and keeping our community
safe.
We have a Facebook page informing you of local community safety events and insights to what the Brigade is up to.
Make sure you jump on and give us a like to follow what we are up to!
The Barwon Heads Fire Brigade is seeking new members.
If you are interested in learning new skills, meeting new people and being part of a team that contributes to the safety of our
community, please call Captain Helen Wood on 0438 507 273, or email Secretary Kira Crawford Brooks on

BARWON HEADS CYCLING CLUB

Winter Riding Part One
We are now in the middle of winter and there has
been a lot of rain. Tassie has been flooded and
NSW has had its share of stormy weather.
But here in Barwon Heads, we have only had rain and
cold mornings. The team have been out and numbers
have been terrific. Why have there been so many riders
continuing to ride this winter? What is different this
year? Is it a B2B hangover? I asked members of the
BHCC what it is about winter riding and here are some
of their responses.....
-Winter is a great season for fashionistas and
chromaphobes alike... it's too dark to see what anyone
is wearing in the mornings, so just make it black and
warm.
-These last few weeks have been really tough
getting the gear out at night, checking the bike is in good
working order, making sure there are batteries in the
lights, checking the forecast to make sure I have
enough gear for the morning ride, setting the alarm for
5.00am on a cold and wet night. The mornings are the
killer though, quickly turning off the alarm with enough
speed so you don't wake anyone up, but no too fast so
you fully wake up, then rolling over and settling back
into a nice warm sleep, dreaming of being fit & healthy!
Of course, when you do eventually get out of bed, you
have to pack away the stupid bloody bike gear that
some optimist got out. Oh well, there is always
tomorrow.
-Anticipating the opportunity to catch up with witty
companions like Damo, only to have hopes dashed
again and again.
-Enjoying the camaraderie of those who ride a wet,
windy or cold morning - and the the friendly argument
over sitting inside or outside at Annie's.

-I love seeing the Hitchcock Avenue lights in the trees,

even at the end of the ride.

-Spare a thought for the Icebergers!

-It's not Winter until I see
Sheridan's tracksuit
pants (see picture), Greg
and Nev with a nanny rug
at Annie's and when I get
in shower after my ride I
can't find a certain part of
my body!
-Wiping the dew off my
bike seat after a 20 min
coffee break is winter.
-Winter is secretly hoping
Lawrie doesn't stay for
coffee so we can sit
inside after the ride.
-Having to get up 5
minutes earlier than
normal to find, and then
put on all the gear I need
for winter riding!
-Winter is perusing Gumtree for an exercise bike!
-In winter, I wished I lived on a sealed road. Winter is
feeling my toes disappear and wishing I'd got around
buying those overshoes before winter. It's also sitting at
Annie's after a ride and feeling icicles forming from sweat
and wondering why I'm not looking forward to riding home.
And from one of the toughest British cyclists ever....
Winter......when does that start??
Chilly...really!.......until your breath freezes on your beard,
it's not chilly!
Cold.....really! When the current overnight low is the day
time high...then it's chilly...but still not cold!!!
Rain.......until you have to carry your bike over your head

knee deep in the banks of a swollen Cumbrian river to

get to work...rain is just showers.
Enjoy the winter...it's like summer in some parts of the
world!
Look forward to 'Winter Riding Part Two' in the next
edition where we bring out a classic from Jeff Cole.
Benty
Meanwhile while we are all complaining about the cold,
local cyclist and occasional Barwon Heads Bendigo
Bank Mascot Mark Bent is on an epic bike ride across
south western WA. Many of us at keen to hear from
Mark when he returns from what looks like a real off
road adventure on his pushy.

Trailer Storage Wanted

The BHCC are looking for a place to store our cycling
trailer that is undercover. The trailer is 5.4 metres long
and only about a metre high. We would love
somewhere local where we can access it easily. If you
have any thoughts or ideas, please contact someone
from the club.
Five Years of BHCC in Talking Heads
This article marks 5 years of this BHCC rubbish in
Talking Heads. Thanks for reading the articles every
month and thanks for all the kind words from everyone.
Also, thanks to those who don't abuse me if you think
what I write is crap. I do enjoy talking to you all down the
street and having a laugh. Your support is always
appreciated thanks. And thanks to all the BHCC team
who always contribute to the articles I couldn't do it
without you all.
That's all our cycling news for this month. Keep riding
and stay warm and visible on the bike. Please
remember to wear a helmet ALWAYS. Even if you have
just had a haircut or a perm. You need to set a positive
example for the younger generation of bike riders.
Andy McNeilly

-Being tempted by new riding gear in the constant quest

to be warm on the bike.

Energy for Life

By Kerry Pettigrove - Personal Trainer

As winter draws near we're going to look at more subtle ways that count when it comes to lengthening and
improving your life-span.

Sam Leitch skies USA - Photo by Dominic Kieler

The first thing to do is to cut your calorie intake to around 1,500

instead of the 2,000 2,500 recommended these days. Most of us are
doing a lot less physically these days, so we need less quantity but
better quality. Overeating leads to risk of obesity, coronary heart
disease, Type 2 diabetes, bowel cancer and cirrosis of the liver.
BE POSITIVE ~ happier people are less likely to suffer from heart
attacks, strokes and rheumatoid arthritis. Negative self perception
can diminish life expectancy.
MEDITATE ~ the most powerful healing tool for stress.
It clears the mind of thought and lets tranquillity in. Start the day with
just 2 minutes of meditation, sitting with your spine erect and
quieten your thoughts. Concentrate on your breath, a mantra or just
one word.
LEARN TO LAUGH YOUR PROBLEMS OFF ~ A merry heart
doeth good like a medicine.A laugh a day may keep ill health further
away. Studies show adults who have a sense of humour outlive

those who don't find life funny.

WALK FREELY ~ getting lots of sunshine, fresh air and water. The American Medical Association says walking benefits health by
protecting the body from cardio-vascular disease, cancers and other diseases. Walking 30 minutes a day 5 times s week adds1.31.5 years to your life on average. This means for every minute you walk you get 3 back!
GET OUTSIDE ~ endorphines in the brain are stimulated during outside exercise. Regular exercise in the sun can make us more
positive and optimistic & help us absorb Vit D.
A brisk walk in the fresh air during the workday can help combat fatigue. Humans can go longer without food than water; our bodies
are composed of 65%-70% water, and during the day we use 2 litres just to function, so to replenish this we need to drink AT LEAST
that amount, preferably more.
So get into it, with some small changes we can live a healthier, happier and longer life.

BARWON HEADS FOOTBALL/NETBALL CLUB

The last 4 rounds havent too favourable for our senior boys. A loss to Anglesea, Drysdale, Torquay and
Queenscliff have tested our resolve, whilst still struggling to manage a depleted list through injury. All
games showed a promise of better things to come, with slow starts and solid finishes to leave supporters
with the belief that finals aspirations are well and truly alive.
The Reserve boys are currently sitting 4th on the ladder, playing a good solid brand of football, with the Colts team poised in second position on the
ladder in division 2.
This week we travel to Portarlington with our confidence up a little, as the senior selection committee has ample talent to choose from, with more of

Barwon Heads Cricket Club

There is nothing easy about
writing a monthly article about
cricket in July.
Every four years there's an ashes series going on over in
the old dart, but not 2016. Of course there's plenty going
on at the other end of town with footy and netball teams
doing battle with their Bellarine opponents, on the
cricket oval there's more footy and soccer while on the
roads we're occasionally slowed down by the Mamils on
their velocipedes, but there's no cricket at all.

While on the subject of the dandy horse club,

there was a bunch of them who got together
and set themselves the challenge of riding
from the Sydney Harbour Bridge to the Barwon
Heads Bridge in April.
Fellow Talking Heads contributor Andy McNeilly and
eight of his mates made the journey of one thousand KM
from the harbor city, along the coast through Kiama,
Batemans Bay and Bega in New South Wales and then
crossing into Victoria going on through Cann River,
Bairnsdale, Trafalger, Mornington and across the heads

on the ferry to finish at the Barwon Heads Bridge.

I believe they had some pretty sore behinds after that, but
have raised quite a few thousand dollars for the Give
Where you Live charity. It was a brave and no doubt
difficult journey, which they planned for over a year and
executed over 8 days. I understand that some of the days
contained appalling weather, but the men in blue stuck to
the task and made it to their destination together.
We often have a little dig at these blokes for their
propensity to hold up long lines of traffic and their lack of
imagination with initials, but they really need to be
congratulated on their efforts. It's terrific that we have
groups in our community that can gather the support to
make this kind of contribution to the community.
Well done Andy and the dandy horsemen.
So here are a couple of dates that we need to
remember.
Friday July 15th at the Tin Shed for the AGM and
Wednesday 20th July at Barwon Valley Activity
Centre for the first training session indoors.
We're heading towards the summer now as we have
passed the shortest day and the long days in the sun are
not far away.
More next month.

work hard to ensure the values of the club

are maintained and everyone gets to enjoy
this sport.

With the AGM coming up there will be several key

positions becoming vacant and unfortunately if they are
not filled the club will not be able to continue. Please give
some thought to coming along to our AGM and putting up
your hand to help. You actually dont have to do much to
keep the club running. We have about 6 meetings a year
with the busiest time being around team selection in
March and September. If you have ever wondered what
goes on behind the scenes or wanted to have more of a
say in your or your childs interest then I highly
recommend getting involved. Any exiting committee
members will offer handover and assistance.

present and all teams are sitting within the top 4 of their
respective sections, so hopefully they can all keep this
momentum going. Winter can pose its own issues and
it's been a great effort by the kids to endure the colder
weather and delays. A big thank you must go to all
parents who have been assisting, and in particular those
that have been assisting on Saturday mornings at our
home courts to ensure the kids have the driest courts
and safest possible playing conditions.

BARWON HEADS NETBALL NEWS

MATCHING ribbons might
just be the winning
ingredient in Barwon
Heads skyrocketing 17 and
under Section 2 team.
Players in the dominant junior outfit, which was
unbeaten after 11 games, wear the same brightcoloured hair accessory as a sign of unification.
Of course, teamwork and advanced skill also have a lot
to do with their early success.
"The girls are doing well because they all support and
encourage each other and have a great captain,
Georgia Honeywell, to guide them on the court, coach
Colleen McKewan says. "Some of these girls have also
played together previously and know each other's
strengths. They listen and take on advice when given
and most importantly they play as a team.
The side also includes Skye Polley, Paris Stone, April
Joseph, Emma Mallaly, Annie Simpson, Chloe Joseph
(vice captain), Cyndel McSween, Penny Stock and
Phoebe Naylor.
Tiffany and Mark Simpson support as team managers,
parents help out with scoring and senior coaching team
Olivia and Sharon Wilson provide expert advice when
needed. I think a few of the girls are still hurting from last
years grand final loss and would really love to take the
next step this year, Colleen says.
"In saying this we don't want them to get too ahead of
themselves as the season hasn't finished yet and there
are still improvements to be made.
In senior netball, A grade beat Queenscliff by 28 goals in
Round 12 and could still push to make finals. B grade
won three of four games leading into Round 13 and was
also knocking on the door of the top four.

17 and under Section 2 with coach Colleen McEwan

C and D grade and the emerging 19 and unders all need to consolidate their promising form before August.
A huge thanks to our wonderful primary carer Cal Davey for taping, massaging and cheering us on rain, hail or shine.
In junior divisions, the talented 17 and under Section 1 team will get a good indication of its season potential when it
comes up against Ocean Grove on July 16.
15 and under Section 1 is putting in huge efforts each week, while Section 2 is level-pegging with a handful of
opposition sides.
The 13 and under Section 1 and 2 outfits are thriving, while the three ever-improving 11 and under groups are
performing brilliantly in their respective Ocean Grove and Geelong competitions. Some of our youngest netballers
also ventured to Melbourne to watch the Vixens recently.
As always, head to barwonheadsfnc.org.au to check out the evens calendar. The anticipated Back Tie Ball was on
June 25 and Ladies Day is July 2. We look forward to seeing some local support courtside at our next home game.
Go Gulls!
