Say please!
Do you talk to your grandmother and your best friend in the same
way? What about the school principal and a younger brother or sister?
In many languages, the word for you changes according to who we
are talking to. In French, for example, we use vous when we are
talking to an older person or someone we do not know very well, and
we use tu when we are talking to children or friends. The equivalent
words in German are du and Sie, and in Italy they are tu and
lei. But these languages arent the most complicate- in Thai there
are more than ten different words for you and in Idonesian there are
more than twenty!
English is easier- in English we just say you to everybody. But
English has rules of politeness, too.
When we ask someone for a big favor we use could. And when we
ask and older person or someone we dont know very well. We use
could, too. But when the favor is small or we know the person well,
we use can. There is also one thing you must never forget when
speaking English-always say please and thank you!

Scientists have discovered a miracle cure for food problems:
genetically modified organisms (GMOs). By changing the genes of a
plant like corn or rice, they have created new varieties that are more
resistant to disease, drought and insects.
Large corporations have invested a lot of money in
GMOs but recently, researchers have started to
worry. What happens when the new plants mix their
genes with natural varieties? And what are the longterm effects of eating food made from GMOs? Nobody knows.
In Mexico, the government has prohibited the cultivation of
genetically modified corn, but it has not done anything to stop
the importation of con made from genetically modified plants.
Almost half the corn that Mexico imports is genetically
modified. Many other genetically modified plants, such as
tomatoes and potatoes, are cultivated in this country, but
because there is no obligation to indicate this on food containers, people
do not know what they are eating.
The corporations say that GMOs have solved many of the food problems
in the world, but some people think that GMOs have created more
problems than they have solved.

The Space Age

The Space Age began on October 4th 1957. On that day the first
satellite, Sputnik I was put into orbit round the earth.
Now things are very different. Many Russian and American astronauts
have travelled in space. They have orbited the earth and some have
travelled to the moon, 384000 kilometers from the earth. Different
countries, for example Japan, the U. K., India and France, have put
satellites into orbit round the earth for communications (TV and
telephone) and for experiments. The Americans and Russians have sent
spacecraft to other planets, and the satellites have sent photographs and
other data back to earth. Some Americans have walked on the moon,
have taken photographs there and have brought moon rocks back to
earth.
Man has not travelled to Mars and the other planets (yet) but he has
spent many weeks in space laboratories. Satellites have landed on Mars
and have examined the atmosphere ant the geology off the Red Planet.
And this is only the beginning of the Space Age.

Sophie: That sounds fabulous. Have you gone up to the top of the

Kate: No, I havent yet. I havent driven the ferry to Ellis Island either. I

consist of two parts: the if-clause (hypothesis) and the main clause
(result). The if-clause can come before or after the main clause.
When it comes before the main clause, the two clauses are separated
with a comma.Example:
