BOOST v2014.1

Injector element problem in configurations with general species transport

CRQ_131339
In some configurations where the Injector element is combined with general species
transport the injected fuel amount is wrong. This has been fixed.
Perforated Pipe in Pipe Outer Diameter
CRQ_132520
The diameter of the outer pipe of the perforated pipe in pipe is now reset based on the
actual flow area. Without this reset the flow area from the outer pipe connected to
restrictions at either end of the outer pipe would be too large (inner pipe area also
included) and lead to incorrect mass flow results.
Restart calculation with models containing Charger Devices with TC Tool Performance
Maps
CRQ_135453
In some circumstances a restart calculation with models containing Charger Devices with
TC Tool Performance Maps failed. This has now been fixed.
Variable Plenum
CRQ_131350
If 'AMEP Consideration of Mech. Power' was selected for a Variable Plenum, the volume
work was not properly considered in the mechanical network balance.

1.3. Aftertreatment
1.3.1. Enhancements
Aftertreatment summary file accessible via BOOST GUI
CRQ_115871
The BOOST AT kernel writes in addition to the already existing ASCII summary file a new
xml summary file. The existing button and the menu option that displays the AT summary
file are re-worked, so that a browser (firefox, ...) is opened displaying the new xml
summary. With environment variable AWS_HTML_BROWSER user can specify which
browser will be used. Possible choices are: firefox, opera, netscape, iexplore. So if you want
Firefox variable needs to be in Windows or Linux environment:
AWS_HTML_BROWSER=firefox (Windows environment variable) or set
AWS_HTML_BROWSER=firefox (Windows command prompt) or export
AWS_HTML_BROWSER=firefox (bash) or setenv AWS_HTML_BROWSER firefox (tcsh)
In Options - Environment Settings user can enter import os
os.environ["AWS_HTML_BROWSER"] = "iexplore" Click OK to save the environment
settings. BOOST loads all environment variables, so the user can change the browser
during a BOOST session.
AUCI: Allow to hide washcoat thickness
CRQ_129270
It is now possible to hide the washcoat thickness in user models, both in catalytic reaction
mechanisms and in transfer mechanisms.

Release Notes

1.3.1.1. Filter
New considered filter property: Soot Trap Efficiency
CRQ_126408
A new filter property - the Filter Efficiency - which describes the mass fraction of trapped
particles compared to the upstream particle mass is considered.
Partial Wall Flow Filter Model
CRQ_128873
The BOOST wall flow filter model was enhanced to describe the flow in a partial wall flow
filter which is plugged only at the rear end. With this new feature it is possible to
investigate the filtration efficiency and pressure drop performance of different partial wall
flow filter geometries during loading/regeneration.

1.3.1.2. General
New simulation summary available as XML file
CRQ_117113
The former ASCII summary is replaced by a XML summary. It provides information about
the simulation set-up and performance, and some base results.
BOOST Aftertreatment results available as mat-files
CRQ_130742
Postprocessing of BOOST Aftertreatment simulations in MATLAB has become much more
convenient as the output of simulation results as mat-files is now supported. In order to
make use of this new feature enter the User Defined Parameter "WRITE_MATFILES" in
the BOOST menu at Simulation | Control | User Defined Parameters and enter "TRUE"
as parameter value. When running BOOST Aftertreatment from Simulink the output of
mat-files can be selected in the BOOST block mask. After the successful simulation the
mat-files can be found in the folder "matfiles" in the case-directory and are ready to be
loaded in MATLAB.
xlsBOOST Simulation Tool available
CRQ_134695
With the help of the dedicated spreadsheet xlsBOOST_Simulation_Tool, aftertreatment
simulations can be run from within, and processed with, MS Excel. More details on the
usage of xlsBOOST can be found in the BOOST AT Examples documentation.

1.3.1.3. Solver
Liquid species transport available
CRQ_118110
The transport of liquid species has been implemented in BOOST Aftertreatment. These
liquids are transported as passive species, meaning that they do not influence the gas
properties. In addition to the already available dosing of liquids with the Aftertreatment
Injector element, the injected liquids can be transported as a droplet phase and deposited
downstream on a catalyst's surface. Applying dedicated AUCI mechanisms these liquids
can be evaporated or their constituents can be decomposed.
Thermal coupling of any combination of (Pipe, Catalyst, Filter) is now possible.
CRQ_120004
Thermal coupling of walls will be performed if at least one of the coupled components has
its variable wall temperature (VWT) model turned on (with only the temperatures of
elements with VWT enabled being updated). For of any combination of (Catalyst, Filter),
coupling of the substrates can be turned off/on separately, with the 'air gap' (formerly

1-8

28-Feb-2015

Release Notes

'turbulent inlet region') switch on/off, respectively. Coupling can be turned on with the
'Couple to upstream element' switch now also available for pipes and particulate filters.

1.3.1.4. Control and Links

New component Temperature Sensor available
CRQ_104377
The variety of different control elements is enriched by the new component "Temperature
Sensor" in BOOST Aftertreatment. Using this component the gas temperature for example
in an Aftertreatment Pipe can be measured and the influence of the thermal inertia of a
thermocouple and of heat radiation between thermocouple and pipe wall is accounted for.
For details of the physical model of the Temperature Sensor and required model input
refer to the BOOST Aftertreatment documentation.
Added ability for usage of bulk license in BOOST AT S-Function Link.
CRQ_129988
At the BOOST AT block mask in Simulink it can be specified whether a bulk license shall
be used instead of a dedicated license. Prerequisite for using a bulk license in an SFunction link is that the solver input file is the same in every single simulation of the bulk.
Parameter variation can be done using the "Favorite Parameters". In the BOOST AT
Examples documentation more details can be found.
Using Favorite Parameters in BOOST AT - S-Function Link
CRQ_130741
Favorite parameters that have been assigned to certain input data in a BOOST
Aftertreatment model can be accessed in a BOOST AT - S-Function Link, allowing for the
parametrization of these input data without going back to the BOOST Graphical User
Interface. A detailed description of this workflow can be found in the BOOST AT Examples
documentation.

1.3.2. Resolved Issues

1.3.2.1. AUCI (AVL User Coding Interface)
AUCI: Confusing loss of current simulation variable mapping
CRQ_129362
When loading specific thermodynamic data files it could happen that the user
unnecessarily lost the current simulation variable mapping. This has been fixed.
AUCI: Duplicated simulation variables for ucp files from e.g. v2011
CRQ_130085
When loading AUCI old models (*ucp files from v2011 and from similar versions) the AUCI
tool created simulation variable duplicates. As a consequence the model failed to build.
This issue has been fixed. AUCI models with variable duplicates, which have been further
edited and saved, cannot be repaired automatically. Please check for simulation variable
duplicates and remove them as required.
AUCI: Export Archive
CRQ_132793
Exporting user coding models as encrypted archives (*.uca) did not exclude source code and
other model details which must not be published with this kind of archives. This issue has
been fixed.

BOOST v2014.1

Release Notes

AUCI: Incorrect Build Information

CRQ_129886
When the DOC_AST_Predefined.ucp is opened on Linux, the Environment setup file on
the Build Model points to the windows path. This is fixed. Now on Linux Environment
setup file is unchecked.
AUCI: Increased Robustness
CRQ_129343
There have been several issues which prevented existing user coding interface models from
being modified with the user coding interface GUI. Those issues have been solved.
AUCI: Lost simulation variable rate
CRQ_129364
When loading an external thermodynamic database file in AUCI Catalytic Reaction
Mechanism for the Gas Species Used in Mechanism, the required simulation variable "rate"
was deleted from the Simulation Variable table and could not be added manually. This is
now fixed so that the rate variable is not deleted.
AUCI: ucp files from v2013 cannot be opened with v2013.2
CRQ_129363
AUCI models (*.ucp files) saved with v2013 could not be loaded. This is now fixed.
AUCI: ucp v2011.2 models cannot be opened in BOOST v2013.2.
CRQ_130086
AUCI models (*.ucp) created with v2011.2 could not be opened with v2013.2. Now this
problem is solved.

1.4. Analysis
1.4.1. Enhancement
