Selector Lever Cable and Bracket


Removal
1.

Position the gearshift lever in NEUTRAL.

WARNING: To avoid accidental deployment and possible personal injury, the backup power supply must be depleted before repairing or replacing any
front or side air bag supplemental restraint system (SRS) components and before servicing, replacing, adjusting or striking components near the front
or side air bag sensors, such as doors, instrument panel, console, door latches, strikers, seats and hood latches.
The side air bag sensors are located at or near the base of the B-pillar.
To deplete the backup power supply energy, disconnect the battery ground cable and wait at least one minute. Be sure to disconnect auxiliary batteries
and power supplies (if equipped).
Disconnect the battery ground cable. Wait at least one minute before proceeding with the procedure to allow the backup power supply to deplete its energy. For additional
information, refer to Section 414-01.

Remove the screws and the lower steering column opening finish panel.

Remove the three screws and the lower steering column shroud.

Carry out the following:

Remove the four screws and position the wire shield aside.

2.

Disconnect the shift cable from the transmission selector lever arm and support.

3.

Disconnect the shift cable from the bracket.

CAUTION: Do not bend or damage the bracket.


Using a suitable tool, squeeze the two shift cable retainer lock tabs above the bracket, and disconnect the retainer from the bracket.

Push the rubber grommet through the bulkhead.

8.

Raise and support the vehicle. For additional information, refer to Section 100-02.

9.

Remove the shift cable from the vehicle.

Disconnect the shift cable from the manual control lever.

2.

Disconnect the shift cable from the shift cable bracket.

3.

Remove the shift cable from the vehicle.

10.

Remove the bolts and the shift cable bracket.

11.

Lower the vehicle.

Installation
1.

Install the new shift cable retainers in either direction on the shift cable.

2.

Verify that the washer is installed on the shift cable retainer with the shiny side facing upward.

3.

From inside the vehicle, feed the shift cable through the opening in the bulkhead. Do not seat the rubber grommet in the bulkhead opening at this time.

4.

Raise and support the vehicle. For additional information, refer to Section 100-02.

5.

Pull the shift cable downward from between the engine and the bulkhead, and position it aside.

6.

Lower the vehicle.

7.

CAUTION: Do not bend or damage the bracket.


Connect the shift cable retainer to the bracket.

8.

Carry out the following:

NOTE: The retainer clip on the shift cable will only slide into the bracket in one direction.
Connect the shift cable to the bracket.

Connect the shift cable to the transmission selector lever arm and support.

3.

Position the wire shield and install the four screws.

Seat the rubber grommet in the bulkhead opening.

10.

Position the lower steering column shroud and install the three screws.

11.

Position the lower steering column opening finish panel and install the screws.

12.

Rotate the gearshift lever clockwise until it bottoms out (first gear), then rotate it counterclockwise three detents ((D) position).

13.

Hang a 1.4 kg (3 lb) weight on the gearshift lever.

14.

Raise and support the vehicle. For additional information, refer to Section 100-02.

15.

Position the shift cable bracket and install the bolts.

16.

Rotate the manual control lever forward until travel stops. Then rotate the manual control lever back three detents to the (D) position.

NOTE: If installing a new shift cable, the shift cable adjustment lock is preset in the unlock position. Carry out this step only if reinstalling the original shift cable.
Using a suitable tool, lift the lock tab on the shift cable adjustment lock. With the lock tab raised, push the shift cable adjustment lock outward to the unlock position.

NOTE: The retainer clip on the shift cable will only slide into the bracket in one direction.
Connect the shift cable to the shift cable bracket.

Carry out the following:

Connect the shift cable to the manual control lever.


NOTE: If installing a new shift cable, remove the band holding the shift cable adjustment lock in the unlock position.
Push the shift cable adjustment lock downward to the lock position.

Lower the vehicle.

Connect the battery ground cable. For additional information, refer to Section 414-01.

22.

Remove the 1.4 kg (3 lb) weight.

23.

Verify that the engine will start in PARK and NEUTRAL and that the reversing lamps illuminate in REVERSE. If not, readjust the shift cable. For additional information, refer to
Selector Lever Cable Adjustment in this section.

24.

Check that the digital transmission range (TR) sensor adjustment is correct. For additional information, refer to Section 307-01. Adjust the TR sensor if necessary.
