50TH ANNIVERSARY
CELEBRATION
Richard and
Sharon Hinrichs

A face that is always on my mind,

A smile I have seen a million times,
Two eyes that would light up the sky
at night,
One last battle you could not fight,
The day was long, then night then
morn.
I knew that soon you would be gone,
I clasped your hand so warm in
mine,
Soon we would be out of time,
To stay with us you fought so hard,
A million pieces went my heart,
Now a photo I look at to see your
smile,
I keep your number on my speed
dial,
A video I watch to hear your voice,
This I doI have no choice.
But great memories I will always
keep with me,
Your love in my heart for eternity.

CARD OF THANKS
We want to thank everyone who came to
our 40th anniversary celebration or sent
cards. Special thanks to David, Linda,
Kevin, Melisa, Dave, Kelly, Luke, Breezy
and Lauretta for all their hard work in
preparing the food and everything for
the day. You are loved.
Carlyle and Katha Johnson
18-1p
Thank you to our children and grandchildren, Minneola Church, friends, and

relatives. The benefit for Burton was

overwhelming. It is impossible to put
into words how supportive everyone has
been. Thank you for all the contributions, food, attendance, etc. Thank you
also for Modern Woodman and our daughter-in-law, Amy, who worked tirelessly to
make this benefit so great. It is hard to
express how thankful Burt and I are.
You are all appreciated.

Animal close-ups and hazy

landscapes paired in new
exhibit at Crossings
ZUMBROTA The Art of Jamie Solberg and Tracie Thompson,
showing May 9 through June 18 at Crossings, is an exhibit that
encompasses the macro and the micro of the rural Midwest. Solberg
paints expansive Midwestern landscapes/skyscapes in oils, while
Thompson uses mixed media and wit to render close-ups of animals
with whom we share this slice of the world. An artists reception is
Saturday, May 21, 6:30 p.m. to 7:45 p.m.
Solberg, of Hudson, Wisconsin, and with a BFA from UW Stout, is
fascinated by the vast, open sky and landscapes of the upper Midwest.
At a distance, one might mistake her paintings for abstract works
composed of broad hazy bands of horizontal color. On closer inspection, it is clear that her paintings are actually closely observed depictions of the Midwestern countryside and sky. By eliminating most
detail, Solberg distills the essence of a place, the season and the
weather conditions, creating a sense in the viewer of having been there
before.
Thompson, of St. Paul, takes an opposite tack, presenting us with
detailed renderings of a variety of animals, particularly birds. Her
works are charming, not only because of the finely realized detail and
beautiful clear colors, but because of her ability to present viewers
with a character, a personality. Though her works arent narrative per
se, one gets a sense that her subjects are in the midst of a story.
Sometimes this is conveyed by the knowing look in a roosters eye,
and sometimes by the whimsical addition of an accoutrement of some
kind. Viewers may wonder, for instance, how Miz Roberta Fowler (a
hen) came by her lovely strand of pearls.
The exhibit and reception are free, and people may view the exhibit
during regular hours: MTWF 10-5, Thurs. 10-8 and Sat. 10-4. Crossings is located at 320 East Ave. in Zumbrota. More at
www.crossingsatcarnegie.com.

The pool will open on Monday, June 6 at 1 p.m. and will close on Sunday, August 21 at 7 p.m.

Fishing already open

for many species
Each year about 500,000 anglers flock to the water on the opening
day of the fishing season for walleye, northern pike, bass and trout in
lakes. Despite all the opener fanfare, fishing already is open for a
variety of species.
Dont wait to fish. You can already be out fishing for panfish , trout
in streams, catfish and a variety of other species, and when the weather
is as nice as it has been, its even more of an incentive to get outdoors,
said Al Stevens, fisheries survey and systems consultant for the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources. You dont even need a boat
because you can catch panfish from shore.
When anglers talk about the fishing opener, they usually mean the
May opener for walleye, pike, bass, and trout in lakes. However, at
this point in the year fishing is already open for species that are
popular among anglers all year, like crappie, bluegill and trout in
streams. In fact, in some Minnesota-Wisconsin border waters, walleye fishing is open all year long.
So what is the reason for a closure on walleye, pike, bass and trout
in lakes? The short answer centers on the Minnesota state fish the
walleye. The walleye fishing closure is borne out of the need to protect
spawning populations of walleye as they congregate in areas like
shallow shorelines and riffle areas of rivers. Opening fishing for them
at this point could make walleye highly vulnerable to getting caught
by anglers in large numbers.
Even if there were other ways to protect walleye at this time of the
year, such as a catch-and-release season, the idea of doing away with
fishing opener could make planning for the upcoming fishing season
difficult for resort owners and anglers who traditionally plan on
fishing the opener.
And pike? They spawn before walleye, but closing the season for
pike allows the walleye closure to be enforceable, because fishing
methods can be similar for the two species.
The tradition of fishing opener in Minnesota where walleye is
king remains strong. We know fishing is big business and peoples
fishing traditions are important. Still, our biggest concern remains
about protecting spawning walleye, Stevens said.
On inland waters this year, fishing opens for walleye, pike, bass and
trout in lakes on Saturday, May 14. Bass fishing remains catch-andrelease in most of the state for another two weeks. Fishing is open now
for panfish , trout in streams, catfish and rough fish. Sturgeon fishing
is catch-and-release from mid-June to mid-April. Muskellunge fishing opens each year in early June.
On border waters, the picture changes considerably depending
upon where one wants to fish. For example, walleye fishing is open all
year in Minnesota-North Dakota border waters and parts of the Minnesota-Wisconsin border waters. And the lake sturgeon season is
open on the Minnesota-Canada border waters.
When fishing is closed for a species, it is illegal to target that species
when fishing.
If youre fishing with a crankbait or spoon before the walleye
opener, thats not allowed because its obvious the target is a walleye,
bass or pike, Stevens said. However, if youre fishing with a bobber
and live bait and accidentally catch a bass, youre fine as long as you
immediately release the fish.
Overall, regulations are meant to protect fish populations when
they need protecting while preserving fishing opportunities whenever
possible.
The great thing about fishing in Minnesota is there are opportunities to fish all year, depending on your location and the species you
want to catch, Stevens said. The fishing opener for walleye, pike,
bass and trout in lakes is a big deal, but dont let that stop you from
getting out there with a rod and reel.
For more information on fishing seasons and regulations, visit
www.mndnr.gov/fishmn.

Landowners, local
governments reviewing
preliminary buffer map
Landowners, counties and watershed districts are now reviewing
the preliminary map of Minnesota public waters requiring protective
buffers. Landowners who have buffers identified on their property
can work with their local soil and water conservation district or
drainage authority to ensure the preliminary map is accurate.
Minnesotas buffer law establishes new perennial vegetation buffers of up t o 50 feet along rivers, streams and public ditches to help f
ilter out phosphorus, nitrogen and sediment. The Department of Natural Resources role is to produce a map of the public waters and public
ditches that require permanent vegetation buffers.
Specific questions about the maps depiction of waters on private
land should go to local soil and water conservation districts or drainage authorities, DNR Buffer Mapping Project Manager Dave Leuthe
said. Soil and water conservation districts are ready to work with
landowners on these issues.
The preliminary map created by the DNR displays public ditches
only in counties and watershed districts that have submitted their data
and had them incorporated into the map by the DNR. A status map is
also available, showing the progress of each Minnesota county and
watershed district in getting their data o n the preliminary buffer map.
Eighty-two of the 95 drainage authorities have submitted the required
data. The DNR is working with those entities that have not yet submitted data, and designed a tool to help counties with paper data to
digitize and submit their information.
Counties and watershed districts reviewing the preliminary map
can suggest updates or corrections where ditch data on the map may
not accurately show the current length or course of public ditches. The
DNR has designed a tool that local governments can use to easily
submit their suggested corrections online. Corrections made during
this review process will help the DNR deliver a more accurate buffer
map this summer.
The preliminary buffer map and status map are available at
www.mndnr.gov/buffers . Also available at this website is a link to
submit comments through May 31 about how the map is being created
and more information about the buffer mapping project.

DNR QUESTION OF THE WEEK

Q: Which fish species are the first to spawn in Minnesota lakes
during the spring?
A: Northern pike usually spawn first when water temperatures are
in the low 40s. There is often still ice on the main lakes when pike run
into tributary streams, rivers or wetlands to spawn. Walleye spawn a
bit later, followed by yellow perch, muskellunge, bass and crappie/
bluegill.
