developments around the centre are coming forward which can only
make matters worse.
The development at Wapping Wharf (behind the Industrial Museum) will cause
the loss of 640 well used car parking spaces; the redevelopment of Broadmead
will result in the loss of 2,000 well used spaces for about 3 years; where will
those cars go? And then there is the arena coming along behind that – 10,000
seats, 680 car spaces!! To address this problem CHASE is co-sponsoring with
Southville CDA the creation of a new pressure group comprising groups from
the wards surrounding the central area. All are suffering or are threatened by
the same parking displacement problems and the rat running and air pollution
associated with them. We will be demanding a properly funded policy for this
“Doughnut Ring” to address the problems caused by the central area policy.
CHASE has made a comprehensive response to the Joint Transport Study
consultation covering these issues. The next CHASE meeting is 11th May, 8pm
at the Nova Scotia – all are very welcome.

Birds seen in Hotwells
I was walking along Charles Place, when a large bird dropped from a garden wall at the
back of Oldfield Road, skimmed the road surface and swooped into a gnarled old tree
in Little Caroline Place. It took a lot of looking to see the bird in the tree. It turned out
to be a large and highly-coloured thrush,
possibly a Mistle Thrush. Its spotted breast
was perfect camouflage, making it extremely
difficult to see.

Granby Green Planning
Decision
On 14th March the development Control
committee narrowly agreed the new inflated
Granby Hill scheme. This includes a
heightened so-called book-end* the real
purpose of which, in the developer's words
was to 'offer panoramic views towards
Ashton Court Park'.
Speakers for the community produced new
evidence on the effect of the development on
the critical parking situation at peak times. In
1990 a very similar scheme on the site had
been turned down `because it would be over-
intensive.. giving rise to an unacceptable
increase in traffic in surrounding narrow
streets'. Mike Butler wondered how traffic
intensity had so 'diminished ' in 15 years to
make planning policy change by 360 degrees.

in terms of provision of pedestrian
improvements in the area to compensate for
increased traffic movements.
Cllr Brian Price made a typically forceful
contribution to the debate as did the CHIS
representative.
The Council's Parks section agreed with
FROGG on the inappropriateness of the
proposed landscaping scheme and this has
now been much simplified and resubmitted to
us (19th April) for comments by 10th May.

Brunel 2000
Isambard Kingdom would be celebrating his 200th birthday next
year. Parties, celebrations and events are breaking out all over the
South West spearheaded by Culture South West - you can find out more about them
at www.culturesouthwest.org.uk. Some of Brunel's greatest feats of engineering including the
Clifton Suspension Bridge and SS Great Britain reside right here in our neck of the woods,
not forgetting Underfall Yard and the railway as well. So the question is what would we all
like to do?
We hope there will be community event,
probably during April, culminating in a street
party. Perhaps there should also be a birthday
cake in the shape of the Suspension Bridge with
200 candles on it, but I am not sure of the
suspending qualities of fondant icing! Anyway let
us know what you would like to see happening,
what you might like to get involved in etc.

Argyle Place Park
Many thanks to all of you who filled in our
survey asking about improvements to the play
equipment you’d like for the Argyle Place Park
next to the Lion pub in Cliftonwood. We had
a good response and the main feedback was a
need for better play equipment for under 5s
and more seating. Many people were also
keen that we don’t reduce the size of the
footballing area which is very popular with
older children (especially if the grass is better
maintained!).
In response to this the council has already
agreed to contribute funds to new play
equipment and we are currently contacting
suppliers to discuss possible schemes which
suit the limited available space. The council
has also agreed to put some rubber crumb
into the existing grass area to improve the
drainage and give the grass a chance to grow
back.
We’re also in the process of applying for
grants and organising fund raising to pay for
this project. Thanks to all those of you who
offered your help – we’ll be in touch to talk
about fund raising ideas very soon!
