This house believes that The war on violent videogames is a war on the freedom of thought.

First speaker
Thank you Mr/Mrs chairperson, a very good morning to Honourable judges, esteemed timekeeper,
the opposition team and members of the floor. My name is ______________ as the first speaker of the
government team; I will first give the definition of todays motion, state governments team stance and
mechanism and get on with the debate with my first point.
My second speaker will rebut the first point given by the first speaker of the opposition and give two
points on the motion and finally the third speaker of the government team will rebut all three points given by
the members of the opposition.
Ladies and gentlemen, before I get on with the motion for today, I as the first speaker of the
affirmative team would like to give the definition of the motion This house believes that The war on violent
videogames is a war on the freedom of thought. War in this context can be explained as a condition of
active antagonism and contention, in which one is not allowed to function despite its very own existence.
Violent is an intense action that intends to cause injury. Videogames is an electronic game manipulation
using consoles and lastly freedom of thought can be defined as any basic right or freedom to which all
human beings are entitled to and in whose exercise a government may not interfere (including rights to life
and liberty as well as freedom of thought and expression and equality before the law). For better
comprehension, The war on violent videogames is a war on the freedom of thought can be put as any
action of regression towards videogames is the same as putting a stop to or interfering with human rights.
We from the government team give a 100% assent to our motion for today The war on violent
videogames is a war on the freedom of thought. The points that will be mentioned in our speeches will be
based on this mechanism, Do not trample with human rights.
Members of the floor, my first argument to support the motion today would be on the constitutional
first amendment of supporting and protecting freedom of speech and thoughts. Violent video games
qualify for first amendment protection. The supreme court said and I quote crudely violent video games,
tawdry TV shows, and cheap novels and magazines are no less forms of speech and thought than the divine
comedy, and restrictions upon them is the same as opposing the amendment.
Like the protected books, plays, and movies that preceeded them, video games communicate ideas
and social messages. Video games are a vast form of expression of advanced ideas that include characters,
dialogue, plot, and music that interact through distinctive features to the medium. Architectural and
mathematical elegance of violent video games produce a transcendent and heightened ways of thinking and
interacting that do not happen in daily normal life.It is pointless to have a war againts violent video games
because if you are limiting the access of video games to the extent of banning this from children, you are
indirectly impeding the natural cycle of brain stimulation of a young child. Video game is a well-rounded
recreational activity which comprises multiple skills through advanced expressed ideas. Ideas are thoughts
and thoughts should be free and Ladies and gentlemen this is why it is called The Freedom of Thought,
everyone should have a fair share of the freedom thus having a war againts this would cause a major and
devastating issue.

Second speaker
Thank you Mr Chairperson.
The first speaker from the opposition team stated that
Our second argument that supports todays motion is on the stimulation of brain. A new study has
found that playing games can stimulate the growth of new neurons and in case you do not know what
neurons are, these are the part responsible for connectivity in the brain regions. Video games can be the most
powerful tool for childrens brain development because not only it helps vastly in the reflex and coordination
skills; it helps loads in childrens psychomotor, cognitive, and linguictics skills as well. A lot of people who
do not play video games would think that sitting in front of the computer all day would not give any
therapeutic cognitive benefits however thats not the case here. A study has shown that children who spend at
least 5 hours playing video games are more likely to have a dynamic spatial orientation, memory formation
and strategic planning. These dynamic trios would increase the level of connectivity and will be linked to
higher intelligence and consciousness, these are the much needed features in order to form good thoughts or
in our case here is the ability and freedom for thoughts.
Im going to list down the games that can improve ones problem-solving strategy and logical
reasoning. RPGs franchises like Mass Effect, The elder scrolls and final fantasy are just a few from hundreds
of games in which players assume the roles of the characters in the game. Typically RPGs focus on playerdriven choices, dialogue options, and the consequences of players actions. In essence, these video games are
much more customized than other games. These features would eventually lead to unique experiences and
and cognitive elements of a player are fully utilized while playing these games, the most prevalent ones are
problem solving strategy (the cause and effect rules) and logical reasoning. Most of the game universe are
taken straight from the myths, legends or fables. While the games are giving you historical education, the
players can exercise their empathy and ethics. Players of videogames can take back the skills to the real
world because what has been applied in the RPGs can be applied in the real world. Choices that can have
lingering consequences must be handled wisely. Basically, playing violent videogames can act as a morale
compass to having a great rational thinking thus battling against violent video games would be pointless.
Studies also have shown that players of violent video games are able to demonstrate and express highly
advanced train of thoughts in which no teachers can give.
My third point to support todays motion would be on parental monitor. There is absolutely no
need to shut down the whole gaming empire to protect freedom of thought. Todays games features have
come with a specific device that enables parents to control the games children are playing. In addition to
clear age rating symbols and descriptor icons, all of todays consoles and handheld gaming devices offer
parental control to help families keep track of the video games children are playing and how long they play
for. Setting these up not only offers parents a greater degree of control but provides families an opportunity
to agree how they will play games. This can be implemented on each system automatically. For instance, you
may wish to set a certain amount of time that can be played each day. Doing this will automatically stop a
game once the time has elapsed. In a family setting this can be a good way to avoid arguments about when to
stop playing. Furthermore, these restrictions would come in handy to stop children from getting distracted if
thats what you are worried about. Setting a war againts violent video games would not accomplish anything,
because with todays technology anything can be done. Thus, interfering with freedom of thought should not
be an issue anymore. With reference to the constitution article 19, Everyone has the right to freedom of
opinion and expression this includes freedom to hold opinions without interference and to seek, receive and
impart information and ideas through any medias regardless on frontiers. Thus if a particular group of
people deemed violent video games are worthy to be fought for then we would soar like an eagle in the sky
trying to protect what is correct for that is our rights.

Third Speaker
Video games do not cause children to be violent
The myth that video games cause violent behaviour is undermined by scientific research and
common sense. There was indeed a case in which video games were considered dangerous because it can
control the mind of young people especially children to be violent, but ladies and gentlemen it was nothing
but a false accusation for parents who are slacking in taking care of their own children. We can all agree that
parents are the best arbiters of determining what is right for their children. The issue at hand though is how
best to support those parents. We believe that with parental controls, ratings awareness and retailer support,
proposals like this are a solution in search of a problem. In addition, there are numerous legal reasons why
video games are no longer considered as dangerous to children.
Before anyone jumps into a conclusion, lets take a deep breath and open your narrow minded a little,
these are a few facts to consider: Average video game player is 20 years old and has probably been playing
for 8 years. Video games are a mass medium form of entertainment that are enjoyed today by people of all
ages. If the members of the opposition stated that vidoe games can cause violent behaviour, I wonder if these
people would even leave their chair because video games are so estatically entertaining. I dont think so.
Even if they are influenced by the violent actions and graphics from the video games they are playing, I
doubt that they would even channel it outside. An average person can sit for 10 hours straight while playing
video games; this shows that whatever the opposition team was saying was irrelevant.
Parental controls to stop children from venturing too much into violent video games
Ladies and gentlemen, believe it or not, todays video games do think of the roles of parents in
empowering them. Video gaming industry has an independent rating system which informs the parents. A
2009 study by the Federal Trade Commission FTC found that 87 percent of parents were satisfied with the
computer and video game ratings. Last year, the FTC said the computer and video game industry outpaces
other entertainment industries in restricting marketing of mature-rated products to children, clearly and
prominently displaying rating information and restricting childrens access to mature-rated products.
Retailers are supportive of the ratings system and are playing a critical role in keeping mature-themed video
games out of the wrong hands. Virtually all major U.S. retailers are working to help parents keep control of
the games children play by enforcing age restrictions. Parental controls are also built into all currentgeneration game consoles, enabling parents to block video games they do not want their children to play.
This ensures that parents standards are enforced, even when they are not at home. As a medium, computer
and video games are entitled to the same protections as the best of literature, music, movies, and art. In the
end, our rights to speech and expression are sacred and inviolateand millions across the political spectrum
agree with us.
Video games turning people into living zombie
As a representative from the opposition team, I would like to deline this statement because of the
most obvious reason, video games do not turn people into living zombie. Playing violent video games or
playing video games generally can be beneficial to the players. Members of the floor, I would like to pose a
question and Im sure the members of the opposition have no idea what Im going to ask. Have you heard of
Call of Duty, counter strike, league of legends and dota? These are all high-profile vilent video games in
which the opposition said would turn players into lifeless zombie. Every year they will hold an international
game tournament for these violent video games and people can make real money from winning these
tournaments. And the prize, I dont have to tell you how much but it is thousand times the money more than

what was given in the cycling competition held recently. People are starting to make real career, real money
off video games.
Ladies and gentlemen, for some reason the opposition seemed to have lost touch with the motion
today, instead of going back to what is the core topic here Freedom of thought, the opposition is focusing
on the effects from playing vilent video games. Violent video games do not turn people into living zombie
nor turning them violent. If you can count how many case of terrorism that happen around the world, how
many is related to them playing too much violent video games? If you can come up with the statistic, please
do enlighten us. But if you cant, You know what to do, sit with us and support our cause here, The war on
violent videogames is a war on the freedom of thought.

My first point for todays motion is, Violent video games increases aggression and violence
ladies and gentlemen, according to general aggression model, reduction in prosocial behaviour would add
into additional negative consequences which are aggression and violence. A study on the aggression resulting
from playing too much violent video games was conducted and the results were truly alarming. Exposure to
violent video games poses a public-health threat to children and youth, including college-age individuals.
Exposure is positively associated with heightened levels of aggression in young adults and children. A war
on violent video games is now real and it can help save more people from being subjected to the rhetorical
freedom of thought. No freedom of thought can be achieved if most players would go out and shoot people
in the public.
Ladies and gentlemen, violence from video games is now a real threat to the society; through a
repeated video game playing, children learn, rehearse and reinforce aggression related knowledge structures
and this would lead to permanent damage on their beliefs, attitude, perceptual schemata, expectation
schemata and behavioural scripts. These all combined would create a monster with a heightened aggressive
personality. The closest example which I think everyone is aware of is the case of Sandy Hook Massacre.
Chris Harper-Mercer killed 10 people including himself and left more people severely injured in the
massacre that took place in Umpqua campus. Through research, Harper-Mercer was addicted to violent video
games, his daily life was flooded with mass shootings simulation and enraged gunmen, for what it first
seeemed harmless, had turned for the worse in his case. His act of repetition had left a permanent damage in
his brain and he finally pulled the trigger and killed many innocents. I guess here freedom of thought will not
mean anything if their brain is damaged now wont it?
Other than figurative brain damage, recent news in China showed that people can actually suffer
from literal brain damage, a teenager in China passed out and eventually went into coma for playing video

games two whole days without resting. It did happen and it can happen again, gamers can get addicted to the
games that they would not be able to manage or take care of their own body. This is the power than any
video game can have on its gamers. Freedom of thought seems a little farfetched now does it? If people are
still taking for granted of what violent video games can do, I guess now its high time to knock these people
out physically before video games do.

Introversion and unproductivity


Playing too much violent video games would also deplete ones social behaviour. If you have heard
the term introvert before Im sure you know where this is going to go, introversion is one social behaviour
in which children are afraid to engage in social convention and would rather spend time alone in front of the
video games. Studies have shown that people who would go online to interact with other new
acquaintances are social freaks. The people cant bring themselves to engage in social face to face interaction
and whose interest is generally directed inward towards his own feelings and thoughts, in contrast to an
extrovert, whose attention is directed toward other people and the outside world. Im sorry, in which universe
does introvert people can change the world with their freedom of thought when they cant even face the real
world and have a real conversation with real people? There is no protecting the freedom of thought if they
dont even have interest towards their external surrounding.
Playing too much violent video games of video games generally would not generate anything
fruitful. Hours and hours wasted on computer and mobile phones cannot be replaced and the time wasted
will ultimately go in vain. People who sit in front of the computer all day would not be able to do anything
else other than being sucked in into the whirlpool of unproductivity.
Social and cultural implications
Ladies and gentlemen, numerous public policy implied by the general aggression model has proven
to be useful to prevent children or youth to not resort to violence to resolve conflicts. It suggests a
constructive and successful prevention programs and intervention method and it helps us understand why
prevention is easier than intervention. Once children are indulged in their world of violent video games, they
would become so addicted to the video games it would make it virtually impossible to stop. In the case of
Anders Breivik, he shot 68 people at a youth camp of the Norwegian labor party and another nine in a
bombing of government buildings according to the judgement rendered against him, he liked playing video
games, he used the video game call of duty to train for his shooting massacre. Playing violent video games
like this train children to be freaks. Through a lot of active repetition, this would call out to cumulative
effect. Violent behaviour is linked to consumption of violence in video games ,people who have a steady diet
of playing these violent games may come to see the world as hostile and violent place. Video game players
would be more aggressive and violent over the long term as well as over short term. People are still not
realising that the most dangerous weapon one can yield is their mind, if minds are corrupted with violence,
the more dangerous society becomes thus one does not have to worry about freedom of thought anymore
because it is only a rhetorical thought.
Other than that, modern society must be aware of creeping cultural shifts towards greater acceptance
of violence of everyday life if this situation is not curbed. It is clear that each generation learns an array of
aggression related knowledge structures from many sources especially violent video games. If no action is

taken to prevent children from indulging into violent video games, then we must be prepared for the shift that
obviously would come with immediate price and long-term risk. The next generation will internalize the
new, more aggressive tolerant norms and hence such tolerance of violence may well increase a nation s
willingness to go to war to further its aims. So ladies and gentlemen members of the floor, the threat is real,
there is not much to protect if this problem leads to this, there wont be any freedom of speech, freedom of
thought, freedom of a nation if someday everyone would be too engulfed in violent video games, they would
be willing to do anything to get what they want; because act of injuring the innocent has been customized in
their brain. Violent video games can turn people even the most innocent ones into a silent killing machine.

Game simulation to stimulate brain
Ladies and gentlemen, members of the floor;
A simulation video game describes a diverse super-category of video games generally designed to
closely stimulate aspects of a real or fictional reality. It attempts to copy various activities from real life in
the form of a game for various purposes such as training, analysis, prediction and ASSASINATION. Yes
ladies and gentlemen, you heard me right, ASSASINATION. The motion for today, The war on violent
videogames is a war on the freedom of thought. video games are advancing in the ways that we normal
citizens dont know of; many of the game developers were offered partnership to create game simulation to
enable armed forces to train, to kill and to hunt, this for a moment might seem like a reasonable idea because
it can help armies to train better but what is not right is, the same amount of violence is being practiced by
mere commoners. Wee game has become so easily accessible to everyone in the whole wide world and now
everyone can practice killing, stabbing enemies in the gut, beheading the enemies and the details are so
disgustingly gawry it should not be in the market for leisure games. As one of my speakers has mentioned in
their speech, general aggression model supported that through a repeated action, people would be immersed
in the culture of the games they are playing. If many people play assasination game without so much of a
monitor, then congratulations, freedom of thought now means training people for assasination. And that is
exactly what we needed now. Freedom of thought is no longer the rules or basic rights for which all human
beings are entitled to, but now, we can changed in the constitution, freedom of thought is a freedom in which
people can do whatever they like including killing people off the streets. Again, congratulations.
There are thousands of other means and activities that can be used to stimulate brain activation, if
parents were to choose between books, children medias and violent video games, I m not surprised if they
decide to overlook violent video games, first up, to choose video games will never ever ever be the first
priority for the parents. Books give more knowledge than any video game can give, it takes us into an
incredible adventure just by reading. Playing video games can be addictive and will lead to aggressive
behaviour. We have enough movies and films that can screw up childrens future, why must we add more to
the list? Children, people, anyone at all can be easily influenced by any means of media and what is
protrayed by the media is never true, its too good to be true, we are literally producing lazy and corrupted
mind, so if it were up to me, I would disagree with all kind of media that can lead to corrupted thoughts
because we dont need it.

The next point given by the government The role of the parents to control childrens choice of games.
Parents do not have time to monitor everything that goes on in their childrens life. Children now are so
brilliant they can erace all trace to the history of the game and sites in the internet they went in. Children can
outsmart the parents that for sure. In case if you do not know, many of violent video games are bought with
consoles that requires SD Card and this SD card can be removed easily from the computer and can be
hidden. How can parents monitor childrens movement if everything can be concealed without a trace?
Parents control is no longer relevant, to curb violent video games from spreading like virus. The use of smart
consoles is not a brilliant move as well, retailers promise parents that children will not be able to play if the
consoles were set to a certain amount of playing time. However little did parents know, there are hacks
websites, to hack the system and enable the children to readjust the time and they can play as much as they
want. Freedom thought is not achievable if the children sticks their head in front of the computer all the time,
what they need is real time interaction with real people, then freedom of thoughts will no longer be just a
fiction.
