Date: March 31, 2016 Subject: Evaluating Possible Responses The University of Central Florida is home to many student organizations that include volunteering and practicing different forms of civic engagement. At the same time, the campus lacks a program that gives students the opportunity to mentor and potentially impact the lives of troubled youth in their community. Orlando is home to quite a few neighborhoods that are considered dangerous or undesirable to live in, becoming the homes of youth that in turn becomes at risk for falling victim to crime and violence. My goal is to help such youth in Orlando by proposing a mentorship organization, Women and Youth Supporting Each Other, to give UCF students the chance to help troubled youths lives change for the better. Strategy 1: Raising Awareness Before I can propose a new organization at UCF, I need to find potential members for WYSE. I would have to advertise my wish to start a new organization and see if enough people are willing to join where the Office of Student Involvement would approve my proposal as per the Golden Rule Handbook. My general audience for this strategy would be any young adult female that is enrolled as a student at UCF. It is important that these students are females considering the nature of WYSE and its focus on helping adolescent girls in particular. I would also have to consider a second audience, a potential faculty member at UCF that would like to support my organization. The Golden Rule Handbook not only requires a certain amount of participants, but also the support of a faculty member or employee to accept any schoolaffiliated organization. I would need to spread the word about WYSE and my intention to propose its implementation at UCF. One tactic I would use is to create an online survey that could be spread through Webcourses, social media, and other online sources. This survey would ask questions concerning whether or not students would be interested in participating in my organization or one similar to it and help measure potential success of my overall proposal. Another tactic I could use for this strategy is flyers. These flyers would contain general information about WYSE and my goal for proposing this particular organization at UCF. I would also provide an e-mail address and create a social media page interested students can join or contact to join the cause. I would hand out these flyers around campus and to fellow classmates. I could also post these flyers to certain bulletin boards in different buildings with the schools permission. Social media could also be a very powerful tool for my campaign. Through previous experience working in visual design, I could create a digital flyer that is not only
informative, but visually stimulating as well, attracting the attention of potential
supporters. The digital aspect of digital promotions means that my message can be easily shared through social media and will be seen by a much larger group of people than a traditional poster or flyer. Once I have found enough participants and raised awareness for my organization, I can expect a high success rate for my end goal. Strategy 2: Partnering with a Local Organization Parramore is infamous for being one of the most dangerous neighborhoods in Orlando. The area reports high rates of high school dropouts, teen pregnancy, drug abuse, and unemployment along with other incidents of crime and violence. Mayor Buddy Dyer has invested time and money to help this neighborhood improve its quality of life by starting the Parramore Kidz Zone, which provides Parramores youth with a safe environment in which kids can learn, grow, and simply be kids in. The program already includes a mentorship program where high school students can meet positive adults and life coaches that help guide these students through difficult circumstances. My strategy would be to start a partnership with PKZ and WYSE to promote my organization and help find youth in the most need of help. In order to start a partnership, I would have to write a proposal to have WYSE work with PKZ. This proposal would be addressed to Bridget Monroe, the PKZ Administrator. As an administrator, Monroe has the power to approve or deny my proposal for partnership and would ultimately decide whether or not UCF can be directly involved with mentoring the youth at PKZ. I believe partnering with PKZ would give my civic engagement campaign a sense of immediacy. The existence of such a program in Parramore shows that there not only a problem that exists within that neighborhood, but also how the neighborhood requires special attention and that the area is already striving to help their youth lead successful lives. This partnership could also give me more power by showing that my proposal has the support of a local organization dedicated to meeting goals similar to my civic engagement campaign. Partnering with PKZ would also make my proposal and my organization seem more realistic. It would demonstrate the potential mentee population to OSI and show how my organization can continue to operate through these mentees.
